  1. Just a heads up, I'm not sure how the departments are different, but when I applied for my MA I never really received any sort of official notification of admittance. I had completed my undergrad there and logged in one day to MyCSULB and there was a link to register for postbacc classes. That's how I found out I was admitted. Just make sure to keep up on knowing your status, but I hope professional programs are more rigid in the admissions process than programs in the humanities. Good luck!

Oh!! I was accepted here back in 2013! I passed, though, because of the lack of funding for MA programs at state schools and applied to PhD programs instead. Do you know Bill Mohr? That guy was so nice, basically held my hand and helped me through everything when I was checking out the school.

Ay, sometimes I wish I would have taken the acceptance. Gosh, what I wouldn't give to have stayed in California, especially with the beach just minutes away.

  2. Ive heard 3.5 is the "bare minimum," that if you have anything below that then it is exceedingly difficult to make it, even at mid and lower-tier programs. Im willing to bet that top 10's are sticklers for higher gpa's. A person at Standford told me the average applicant gpa is 3.8. But of course, that shit aint written in stone, and there are exceptions to everything. Case in point, moi! Supposedly, the average gre subject exam score of students admitted into my program is the 70th percentile. I scored in the 18th percentile, and not only did I get in, I got a pretty bad ass fellowship as well. Don't let miniscule numbers hold you back. Youre more than that.

  3. Honestly, I think you did the wrong thing. You have to think about yourself and yourself alone. Screw ethics. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity in which you will be grounded in a new culture, city, and program for 7 years. If you think youd be happier and more successful at another place, well then, go there. I would have. But it's too late now, so just hope it all works out at where you decided to attend.

  4. LOL!! I went with Cornell. Princeton was a complete out of the blue, totally unexpected thing that happened over the weekend. :) We'll have to have a "meet-in-the-middle" lunch for everyone off the impostor thread next year. :)

Oooo yes lol! We can form our own society! Though at that point im sure id be freaking like crazy, thinking what the hell did i just get myself into lol.

  5. I decided to go with UCSB. I was really looking forward to moving to another part of California (SB is too stuffy for me), but it was a matter of fit.

HELL YEA! Santa Barbara!! I wanted so badly to get in there but i wasnt cut of their cloth. Congrats man! That is one bitchin school and program!!

    I must admit...im a little jealous haha!

  6. Maybe Im over thinking this. But say I notify a school Im declining an offer. Then they hit me back with more funding. And I'm still like, "Nah, dude. I'm cool." And then they be like, "Well, where are you going?"

Should I answer. Seems a little intrusive and nosy, being that it is the graduate secretary asking me this, not even a DGS or POI. I'm scared there are some little chivatos up in there that might try and get in touch with where I'm going and wreck my style. Is it safer to just ignore this nosy vieja or what? No other program I declined was like this.

  7. The campus was beautiful. I know something was said about the architecture being ugly or something but truthfully it was gorgeous. Clear, cool sunlight, trees everywhere (I love the smell of eucalyptus trees!), I mean, there were freaking BUNNIES hopping across the quad and butterflies floating over our heads. It was ridiculous. There seemed to be a lot of on-campus resources (different centers, places to study/eat/rest/etc.) and the campus is H U G E. The department took us to dinner and the walk from the department to the restaurant took about 20 minutes. The professors that I met were all incredibly warm and supportive, even the ones who aren't in my area were excited and encouraging about my project. The grad students were very friendly and eager to give us information and answer questions. That said, I was only able to meet one of my POIs and it didn't seem like a match made in heaven. I'm waiting to hear back from another couple of professors who weren't able to attend and then I'll make my decision. If you want anything more detailed, just PM me. :)

This is the kind of shit im saying goodbye to for the freaking Midwest. I saw squirrels running around there, no bunnies.

  8. Id take everything in this thread, and on gradcafe for that matter, with a grain of salt. I had not even discovered this site until after I applied, and therefore did not benefit from it at all, and still got into places. In truth, though there are some marvelous people on here, and I in fact feel I have developed great friendships with people, some of which I might be meeting in person if we select the same program, there are a complete bunch of pretentious douches here. Looking back, all the stat posting and lollibragging and preaching about what one must do to make it past such and such rounds just added a whole bunch of stress that didn't need to happen. The biggest piece of advice I could offer is to browse this place if you wish, but do know that the blueprint to admission doesnt lie in this website. And furthermore, after you have applied, STAY THE FUCK OFF OF GRADCAFE!
