PRGuy- Seriously. They told me they had an "unfortunate situation" this year and had only one funding package to offer. Utterly ridiculous! I had the same thoughts...what the (expletive) is going onw ith their program? They threw a huge party at NCA which I attended. I networked and was truly excited about the program. I mean, do they REALLY think anyone is going to pay 40K per year for four years?! What the hell happened? Is the department falling apart or something? It is the strangest thing! I called Syracuse and Ohio...they are still reviewing apps. I am waiting for one slowpoke prof to send in her rec to GSU (deadline is 3/15) but I told her I knew they were meeting before the deadline (rolling admissions)...so I hope she sends it in soon!! UCONN told me I would hear at some point this week. *crossing my fingers and drinking my wine (Actually I went out and bot a BOTABOX of Chardonnay---equal to 4 bottles...not bad...I need it!) -
I got two rejections and it sucks. Both happened in early Feb. I drank a bottle of wine and cried. It pissed me off soooo much! Then a paper I submitted for publication got rejected. For an entire week I did almost NO WORK. I had no desire to do anything...thinking my life was a waste and I was going nowhere. Sucks being in limbo!

Hey Bob Dylan Welcome to the forum. When you say Illinois do you mean Champain-Urbana? You might want to try calling them. A colleague of mine called them yesterday and found out she was waitlisted. They are straightforward and will tell you where you stand. Good luck!! -

I spoke with them. They accepted about 15 new students but they only had 1 funding package!!! Only one person got funding. That seems absurd to me! Unbelievable!!! -

I got into Rutgers but without funding. I emailed the prof I have been in contact with at Rutgers. He says he hopes Rutgers is still in the running in terms of my choices. I wrote back saying I would love to go there and asked about the possibility of securing funding. It sounds like he wants me to go there...but without guaranteed funding I just cannot swing it! I basically said that Rutgers is my top choice and I *will* go there if they could help me out financially...we shall see. -

Thanks so much PR Guy. That brightened my day. I was beginning to feel hopeless...like what the hell did I do wrong?! lol. I would love to go to GA State. Rutgers, GA and UConn are my top choices right now. -

I am getting super discouraged. I was rejected from UNC and UMass - I kind of expected that though. I am still waiting to hear from Rutgers, Ohio, UConn, Syracuse and GSU. My profs tell me if I have not yet been rejected by the schools that is a good sign. I dunno. My GRE scores are slightly low 87% verbal and 42% quant (but I am applying to qualitative programs) and 5 on writing. GPA is 3.86 Grad and 3.72 Undergrad Worked for a Congressman in his press office. Presented my research at several national conferences. Working on publishing an article with a prof. I teach 2 sections of Public Speaking per semester (not TA but actually teach the glass) and received very positive feedback from students and faculty alike. My profs tell me my app is competitive but I am freaking out. I just need to hear back If I haven't heard yet is this super bad news?! -

When I say top tier I mean the mass comm department has a very high reputation. My profs told me that when applying for jobs in academia the name and reputation of the department are most important. But there are some schools (those that have a lesser reputation, have a relatively new program etc.) that are still good schools but might be considered "second tier." -

Hey everyone, Who here is applying for Fall 2010 admissions, what are your stats and where are you applying? I've narrowed my list a bit. UMass UConn UNC Rutgers Syracuse Pittsburgh Penn State UMD U of FL Miami University UGA Temple I've started my apps. I agree with what some others said...a FIT is key. You need to know what you want to study and with which professors you would like to work. I think that is a major deciding factor. As I said, I have some kids in my program applying to PhDs with GPAs and GREs lower than mine BUT they are not applying to top tier schools... -
I am the opposite. I suck at math. I got a 570 Q and a 610 V. But, retake it....maybe take a course....it cant hurt!

I am definitely applying to programs where qualitative research is emphasized. Quant is NOT my bag. I won't go somewhere where stats are a major component of the curriculum. My research has been in Mass Media (Feminist studies and the convergence with mass/global media) and Film, but I don't want to limit myself to one specific area. My profs tell my to apply to a "flexible" grad program where I can chart my own course per se. I go to Miami which, I am told, has a highly regarded MA program in Comm. My peers, save for one, all have lower GPAs and GREs than mine. I think that some of them don't know what they want to do so they are thinking of a PhD but are uncertain. One girl is applying to tier 2 and 3 schools because she knows her limitations. Another barely cracked 900 on her GREs, has a 3.5 GPA and no conference presentations but is applying to Ivy League schools I agree about the fit....I think that is most important and I need to tailor my apps to each department...emphasizing what research I have used from XYZ faculty member at a particular institution. God I hope the economy picks uo so less people will be applying!!! -

I am also applying to PhD programs in Mass Comm. currently at Miami U (Ohio). GPA of 3.87 graduate. 3.74 undergrad GPA. Presentations in 4 conferences. Working on publishing a piece with a former professor...will be "in review" when I apply. i teach (not TA) 2 courses a semester of Public Speaking...which, I am told gives me an advantage since I have teaching experience. This summer I secured an Internship in the press office for a Congressman on Capitol Hill who told me he would write me reccs if I needed them. Best GRE score was 1180 (610 v, 570Q ) and 5 writing. The math doesn't bother me much because my focus is film studies. Am applying to UMD, UMass, Georgia, Arizona, Florida, Florida State, Rutgers, Alabama, Brown (film studies), univ of Miami (Florida), Syracuse, Penn State, Temple, Wayne State and Uni of Pittsburgh. I am super nervous about the application process. I just want to know I will get in somewhere! Oh God the anxiety is killing me! -
I finish my MA at Miami University (Ohio) this spring. I am applying to the following schools for my PhD in Mass Comm: UMass Georgia UConn Rutgers Univ of Miami (florida) Penn State Uni of Pittsburgh Syracuse Colorado (boulder) Arizona Univ. of Florida Florida State Alabama My credentials: Currently I have a 3.83 GPA. Highest GRE was 1180 (I suck at math)! I expect my GPA to be a 3.875 by the time I graduate. I currently teach (not TA but actually teach by myself as an instructor) 2 classes of Public Speaking per semester and have very good student reviews. I have presented at NCA and ECA and am working on publishing a paper with a former professor. I interned in the press office for a Congressman ont he hill this summer where I worked with the press secretary to write press releases, news stories, media briefs etc. I have great reccomendations and good contacts but I am nervous about the application process. The economy is SO BAD...I will be SO MUCH relieved to find out I am in somewhere!!! What do you think my chances are? I know there is no CORRECT answer, but would like to get your insight. A lot of the others in my program have lower GREs and GPAs than me...and have less conference papers etc. They are also all applying to PhD programs. None of them seem to be worried....
