  1. Right? -- no one hires just for 4-5 months. I am also wondering what to do during the summer. I would like to move early to get to know the place because I will be moving from overseas, but even then I would have nothing to do there. I also considered summer courses but that's expensive. I will probably stay in my room studying French? Boring..
  2. Yeah, thanks! I just thought "hard copy" might magically mean something that many people know about and I dont..
  3. Does anyone applying to maryland know if or what I need send through snail mail? the graduate catalog only says "hard copy mailed to the graduate secretary". Thanks a lot for your help!!
  4. I know all universities use different systems, but for me, (im applying to 5 schools) none of them shows that they have received my gre or toefl score. Is this normal? And would it be okay if I had the receipt from ETS? Thanks lots!!
  5. I am so late but I wanted to thank you for encouraging me to ask her! She very nicely accepted to write one for me.
  6. I am thinking about asking for the rec letter from a professor of the school i am applying to. I have taken her class when she taught at my school as a visiting lecturer. We have talked a lot, about research too. I am planning to ask letters for other school as well. What do you think? any idea would be welcome and appreciated.
  7. Hi, I am an art history undergrad in Japan. I have a simple question on a very general topic regarding graduate application: Do many undergrad students in the US go to the graduate level of the same school? Or do they go to different school? In Japan, many undergrads usually go to the graduate level in the same school, thus knowing the adviser very well before admittance. I'm just curious. Any comments appreciated! Thanks,
  8. How can I upload a blog?

  9. Thank you all for replying! I guess I have to face the reality that GRE matters, and the only thing I could do is to get the best score possible. Also, thank you fuzzylogician. It's nice to know that someone understands that I worry so much. I guess I am nervous because I have the test next week, so it really helps. VioletAyame and spunky, congratulations on your admission! If you don't mind, I would like to know your verbal scores and how you got it. I have enrolled in Magoosh and I am doing a heck load of reading. I guess I have to start doing vocab like crazy.. Another thing, spunky, how did you get the "absolute confidence" to say that they look at the score in exactly the same way as they do for native speakers?
  10. Hi! I am a Japanese student, going to be taking the GRE next week. I've been studying for it almost everyday, but the score is not improving, especially verbal. I think I can get around 160 on math but I'm about 150 on verbal right now. I'm really worried because I'm going for around top 20 art history programs which would probably require around 160 in verbal. Does anyone have any idea how universities look at GRE for international non-native speakers? I feel like it should be unfair if the scores were considered equally with the native scores?
  11. Hi, LeventeL! Thanks for the reply I have actually started taking the Magoosh prep course. They have pretty good flashcards and I'm liking it a lot. Do you think, for the reading comprehension, I need to practice fast reading? Would that be effective?
  12. I went to the first conference ever. So inspiring!!!!

  13. Hi! I am looking for some materials to improve my verbal scores. Many online resources- Magoosh, Kaplan, Manhattan Prep, etc.- have lots of materials on quant but not as much on verbal. English is my second language and I really want to improve the verbal and writing. My verbal score now is 150 and I want to raise it to 160 at least. I know it'd be really hard but I need that score. Any advice would help. I am willing to pay some money if that's necessary. Tell me what helped the most for you? Or if you know which of them that has a good reputation for verbal? Thanks!
  14. how do i keep my motivation going

  15. Quick question! In the SOP, is saying "I may not be good at this but I can do this" be appropriate? Or better off just saying "Im good at this"

The purpose of the SOP is to show the admissions committee why you're the best candidate to offer admissions and funding to. So, should you tell them that you may not be good at it?

I think, telling ur weakness is a show of strength. It says u know what you lack. You could probably add things u are doing to overcome that weakness. It also impresses upon ppl that you are honest and human after all.

  16. I am also curious about how top PhD programs supports students pursuing curatorial position.
  17. Is it just me or is meeting a nice guy really this hard?

  18. Often find myself looking at nude paintings at night and wonder what Im doing with my life

I think many can relate to the sentiment (but maybe not the nude paintings ;) ). It can take many twists and turns before you feel like you've arrived, but trust that no matter what path you're on, you're almost there.

  19. Hello! I'm an undergrad student in Japan, hoping to go to a grad school in the US/UK to get a degree and become a curator. I study Japanese modern art history and am planning to continue my research in the field. I've been looking through schools, mainly in the US, and have found several professors I want to work with in UPenn and Maryland and several others. I'm concerned, though, that these schools might be too difficult to get in. These schools, as far as I've seen on their websites, both offer Phd, but I don't know if I could get in to a PhD program with a BA degree in a Japanese University. It's not that Japanese art history program suck, but going into top schools for a Phd seems a little too hard to me. I've talked with a prof in Penn and heard that I don't need MA to get into Phd program. But some people will be applying with MA and I don't feel like I can compete with them. I think I will be able to get a strong SOP and Writing Samples. I've taken French for 3 yrs+ and I speak Japanese, so I'm very strong in languages. But will they be enough? (I'm working on the GRE... It is a nightmare.) It's really hard to decide, do you think I need a PhD? Because I hear both: PhD is crucial/ MA is enough for a curator. I'm thinking about other choices like transferring to a Junior in one of the undergrad, maybe? But I don't have that kind of money, and that would take me tooo long to get a grad degree. Whatever I do, though, I want to be a curator in the end. I want to know what choices I have to get there. What do you think? Any advice/comment is very very very appreciated!! Thank you so much! Naoko
  20. Thank you so much for the specific info! I was feeling that taking music theory courses are a little irrelevant to my research, although it is of my interest. Do you know how many classes/hours in a week the US schools usually offer for the undergrad seminar? My seminar class is only once a week and I only have 2 to 3 presentations/papers for the class each semester. Also, my school does not offer so many East Asian art history courses. I feel like I need to study and write more on my research topic.
  21. Don't know how to spend a holiday..

  22. Thanks! Any topic would help. Like Western modern to ancient Egypt. My course in Japan covers anything related to art such as aesthetics and music and fine arts. My research is on modern Japanese art, but I also take music theory/history classes and visual cultures. I think even a freshmen assignment on Renaissance would help me, as well as an assignment from an internship would.
  23. I'm a undergrad student in Japan, studying art history. I'm planning to attend a grad school in the States, and I want to know what kind of essay/assignment topics do undergrad or grad get. I just want to grasp what it's like specifically to study art history in the States. If you took/are taking art history courses or art history major, pls help! It doesn't have to be exact
