  1. Well, this sucks. I got my invitation for UC Irvine yesterday and my invite to Johns Hopkins confirmed today and they are both Feb 6-8. Since Johns Hopkins was my first choice and I had already played the fool with them by not seeing their invite email until yesterday and thus replying past the deadline, I was hoping to not have to pester them for a different date and work with UC Irvine for an alternative date. But since the tickets haven't been purchased yet, I suppose I can go to the later Johns Hopkins weekend (which i believe someone said was in early March).

UC Irvine really wasn't that willing to work with you? That seems kind of odd. Not even a Skype interview?

Does anyone know if it makes a difference whether you go to the first or second interview weekend? I'm hoping the answer is no, so I don't have to feel weird about trying to go to the second Johns Hopkins weekend.

I sure as heck hope that schools that send out interview invites later in the season understand that they have to be accommodating... It's impossible for us to save interview weekends for schools that we haven't heard from yet if we have a real interview offer in hand from somewhere else. All this to say that I will be taking the later interview weekends without hesitation if I get any other interviews, because my Jan/Feb is already super busy (and I only have 4)!

  2. Hi all, I have been kind of stalking this forum for a few days and finally decided to join. Sorry! I just got an invite form Stanford and thought I'd let some of you know. As for the UCSD question, I can actually answer it. I have contacts at UCSD and they told me that all invited were sent in December, and only if they get rejections will they send out anymore to fill the vacancies. Sorry!

Congrats!! What department home program at Stanford did you apply to? :D

    And congrats to you, SystemsBio!!

  3. who received the reject  from Stanford Biosci and for what track?

I'm thinking that this might be a troll. Last night, someone posted an, ahem, rude result that was something to the effect of: "who reported my earlier post?? [many naughty words]" under the label of Stanford Biosci... So given all the weirdness we've had with those results recently, I'm thinking this might be that person, who is just some kind of troll. :P

Then again, maybe not. But I find it weird that they'd call to notify rejected applicants.

  4. I applied to some biophysics programs and found that what "biophysics" means varies widely by school. At some places it basically means conventional membrane dynamics and protein folding; at others, like Harvard, it includes computational approaches to a much broader variety of biological phenomena, like genomics and neuroscience. I'd suggest looking into specific programs rather than seeking a blanket term - I ended up applying to a wide range of programs including general biology, biophysics, and genetics, because the terminology varied so much from school to school.

    good luck (:

  5. Wait, why do you think we find out about Stanford through snail mail? Last year all the posted interviews were email or phone??

EDIT I just saw the results page post. I have to say that I'm skeptical that there will be no email notification. How are we supposed to schedule interviews without email contact?... It also seems extremely unlikely that they would have reverted /back/ to snail mail after apparently years of email?

  6. Someone posted on the results page that they called MIT and were told that the committee is meeting today and tomorrow and will be sending interview invites "throughout the week."

Still nothing here either. This week is gonna be rough in terms of waiting.

    EDIT: to clarify, MIT Biology.

  7. I was interviewed by MIT last year (I was rejected and am re-applying) and my invite came in on the 8th of Jan via e-mail. I'm fairly certain that we'll hear back this week. From what I remember from the 2013 application cycle, Stanford sent out invites the same week, and proceeded to send out a wave of snail-mail rejections to the remaining candidates in late January.

Awesome, thanks! Stanford and MIT both this week... Scary :/

Best of luck with your application! I hope you get great news this time :D

  8. I just sent mine in... haha, can't hurt. Did anywhere else require them...? I didn't even think to look.

Not that I know of, but I was planning to recheck their websites, as I almost missed that Princeton wants them...! I'll post here if I find any (:

@fun_cookie Congrats! I'm in a similar situation: QCB only offered me one weekend and I can't make it. I emailed back and asked if I could attend on an alternate weekend after explaining that I had another interview scheduled for that weekend and the flights are already booked. I think that it's pretty common for people to have conflicts (there are only ~6 weekends in this period, and most of us applied to more schools than that), so I'm hoping that they'll be accommodating (:
