I'm waiting on UW as well but wholeheartedly expecting a rejection. -

I highly approve of this post. I'm wait listed at UNM and it's a special kind of hell. -

Thanks, guys! Seriously feeling the love today. Apparently I'm one of two on the waitlist for my specialty. Now I'm wondering whether I'm one or two haha. -

Aww, thank you! That means a lot right now, seriously. I hope we both get off waitlists and into awesome schools. Where are you waitlisted? Also, if you think about it, the 21st isn't too far away! -

Hello, group. I've been waitlisted at my DREAM school (New Mexico) and would so appreciate if people who have been accepted and don't plan on attending could let the department know. I'm so surprised and excited and now am a bundle of nerves. I'm waiting on five more after this, but this is certainly my first choice. Ahhhh! Also, if you have been accepted, can you let me know your speciality? Apparently there's only two people on the waitlist for what I study and I'm one of them! /endrant. I now need ice cream. -
I just had a quick question about entering a Ph.D program with an MA: do people with an MA typically transfer their credits to their Ph.D program? If so, does this mean they are eligible to complete their degree in less time than an applicant straight from their BA?

Best books on literary theory?
ArthChauc replied to boomah's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I will forever praise the Norton edition on theory, Parker's work on interpreting literature, and the Yale course. I came into my MA with exactly zero theory background and now I can hold my own in pretty much any conversation about psychoanalysis (which happens to be what I work with primarily along with a little bit of Marxism, trauma theory, and feminism). -
Inter-disciplinary.net, some information?
ArthChauc replied to Giulietta's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Hi! I've applied to/been accepted by a conference put on by inter-dis and asked a few profs about the reputation. None of them seemed to know much but they all agreed that it was a ridiculous amount of cash, especially since my conference was to be in Portugal and I'm a US graduate student here in the states. I decided not to attend based on the lack of reputation and price alone, but I'm interested to hear from anyone who has actually attended. I know that they tend to be pretty rigid (they provide meals and you're expected to come on the first day and stay through the last) and that they're normally in pretty cool locations. I would say that if you have the cash, it's at least a line on your CV and probably can't hurt you. If you don't, clearly your abstract was interesting and you could probably find another conference that's cheaper or more renowned. I know this isn't terribly helpful, but I hope it at least gives you an idea! -

Just saw two New Mexico acceptances go up today--congrats to whomever received them! I'm feeling pretty shitty right about now, New Mexico is currently my first choice. Last year they sent emails over the course of a few days, so I'm hoping that's the case with this year as well. -

Purple is right, that happened to me with my MA as well. You never know. Also, you could find a job at the writing center which is arguably better than teaching with better hours and more face time with students (depending on how you feel about undergrads haha). Congrats on your acceptance though! Did you receive a letter in the mail or was it via email? -

Also, I was just thinking about this today...despite the Tuesday (?) bloodbath on the boards, it has been a pretty quiet week. I'm predicting next week to be insane with results. Thoughts? -
Fall 2014 applicants??

Despite getting three (!!!) rejections this week, the school that accepted me called me out of the blue today to ask when I wanted to come and visit and then mentioned, by name, professors who wanted to meet me. Despite feeling nervous about the last six schools I have to hear from, that totally made my day. -

I don't even see a section that shows status on the website, even after logging in. -

Ugh, not looking forward to a Washington rejection. I got rejected from Rochester Tuesday and WUSTL this morning. Nopenopenopenopenopenope. -

You know when you get an email to check the website you're probably about to get denied from a school. So long, Rochester dreams. You were beautiful and now you are over. -

I was signed up to present at PCA but ended up dropping out--decided it wasn't worth the time even though I enjoyed myself there last year. I presented on memory and culture in 2013 and would've been on a film panel talking about Batman this year. -

"I had sat down at a bar to read when Indiana called." I cannot think of a more beautiful way to have been accepted anywhere. Have a beer, pretend I bought it for you*. *Note: I only buy people craft beers. Extra points if it's an IPA. -

Did you seriously just get two acceptances in one day? Congratulations! Also, pass some of that my way. -

BowTies, I just realized that we're relatively close to each other--I'm northwest OH. I wondered why our temps were identical haha. And yes, not at all too cold for ice cream. No such thing. -

You guys! I've been accepted by the University of Eat All The Food In My House! It's unfunded, but they have calorie reimbursement. -

Thanks, all! I'm excited--it's a nice distraction from worrying about emails from schools in my inbox. Also, did anyone else apply to New Mexico? I posted a thread on the main boards but nobody bit. -

Haha yay!? Exactly. And I have no idea. Somebody is supposed to be calling me during the week, I don't even know if I can go or afford to be away from grad school that many days, but it would be pretty cool. -

Pointless but exciting (to me) post: I just won two tickets to the red carpet premiere of Divergent. Feeling pretty awesome right now.
