Good or bad, girlfriend gets the first call (since we went through this with her last fall). Then mom.
-
Excellent! Do you know which school you will hear from first?
-
I agree. Learn from the C+ and do well from here on out. You'll be fine.
-
I can't imagine that visiting this late in the game would help you in any way as far as the decision process goes. You can go just to see the campuses, but I'd save your money.

Not too late - the application deadline is January 15.

You can't be disappointed with no or low expectations.

Putting Sermons, Bible Studies, Sunday Schools, on the CV?
LateAntique replied to 11Q13's topic in Religion
+1 - I wouldn't include any homilies or sunday school experience on the CV. That seems like it would be padding the CV with stuff that would seem rather humdrum to people who teach at the places to which you're applying. -
I've heard Iowa has a good record of placing graduates into tenure track positions. I'm glad to hear your friend is doing well with her career.

Completely dishonest? Completely worth it?
LateAntique replied to 11Q13's topic in Letters of Recommendation
No moral high horse here - it's just wrong. Is it murder? No. Is it still wrong? Yes. I'm not saying anyone's going to end up anywhere for doing it - I'm just saying that it's dishonest. Also, when you ask letter writers to write you a letter, you should ask them if they will write you a strong letter. If you do this, you'll have no worries about your LoRs. Secondly, I think people only come on here and start these posts to see how many people are willing to justify their dishonesty. If you're going to do it, just do it. -
Completely dishonest? Completely worth it?

Your friend should not look at them if she has waived her right to see them. I don't think kicking off your graduate career with an act of dishonesty is the way to go. -
I am typically my harshest critic. The grad school application process has only made this worse. I was bummed about my mediocre GRE scores and I was certain this was a nail in the coffin of my hopes to get into my top choice. I went back through the email correspondence I had with the DGS at my top choice and they said, "Your GRE looks great. We're really more concerned with your letters of recommendation and your statement of purpose." How did I not remember this? I've seriously thought, "I have no chance of getting in" when it seems all is not lost. Is there anything that you may have missed in your stress-induced delirium?

I've been dying to know what the λχ. Hello there, χ! is all about - can you explain it?
-
My SO started her Ph.D this past fall at my top choice (her top choice as well). She's locked in there for the next 6 years. The ideal plan is that I get in and everything's groovy. My second choice is only 4-5 hours away and isn't that bad of a train ride. The hardest would be if I end up in Iowa.

how many schools is too many? too few?
LateAntique replied to papertiger31's topic in Geography Forum
I'm not in your field, but I applied to 6 schools. I have 3 Ph.D programs and 3 MA programs. 1 Ph.D program is more or less a 'safety'. I had to weigh costs vs. giving myself a chance. I think it's all about striking a balance between 1st choice and 2nd choice schools. -
I'm interested in the early Christian reception of Classical literature. I want to explore how classical philosophy shaped the categories the early Christians used (this includes the NT authors) to discuss their own theology. I'm also interested in how the Greek and Latin languages helped to shape the respective theologies of the Eastern and Western Churches.

My dreams are so hum-drum and regular. OP's dream = awesome.

What have you been doing? I need some ideas!
-
I have an entirely hypothetical question. On the super slim chance that you don't get in anywhere, what are you going to do? I was thinking about it: I have a double major in Religion and Classics from a state school. Who in the heck is going to hire me? I don't have enough Latin to teach it (I have 18 hours, one needs at least 24).

It's just Duke's style - one of my friends in the program told me that.
-
All of my applications are out. I just have to mail a copy of my GRE scores to the department at Iowa, but they aren't due until Jan 15th. I've been told that I should hear back from Duke by early February, so I'm getting excited.

A Question about the Religiosity of Programs and Their Professors
LateAntique replied to 11Q13's topic in Religion
I know several Duke professors pretty well. -
App due before Jan 1, but school closed...
LateAntique replied to Postbib Yeshuist's topic in Applications
I am not applying to Drew, but I am applying to Fordham and they have a Jan 4th deadline - only that they aren't open until the day of the 4th. I emailed them and they said that they would be accepting materials a week after the 4th. Take that for what it's worth. -
Anyone 'waiting' but also working on more apps?
LateAntique replied to George's topic in Waiting it Out
I've got 5 of my 6 applications in, but the other one isn't due until Feb 1st, so I decided to take a break until the new year. -
I find it interesting that you seem to say a Theologian is not an exegete. The Angelic Doctor would disagree.
