I think doing the languages is really what matters in any early Christian programs. Because Notre Dame's ECS program is a joint venture between Classics and Theology, they tend to like candidates who have strong language backgrounds. If you can, do a summer intensive this summer and sign up for some classes in the fall.

Here's the link to an article that discusses a one-man Classics program at a university in Louisiana getting the boot. My own Classics program only has a few majors and it makes me concerned. We are the original "interdisciplinary program" - it's a shame that in our vocation-driven economy our field is devalued. What will happen when we have a generation who cannot understand anything beyond their own lifetime? What will happen to the literature? The art? What happens to politics?

Accepted to Fordham for an MA in Historical Theology. No funding, though. I won't be accepting as I have a fully-funded offer from FSU.

I'm not in your field, but I had to write a senior thesis for my Classics major. We're one of the few programs that has maintained this tradition at my university.

Got my rejection in the mail today from Catholic U. After I heard they only have funding for one person, I pretty much had written my chances off. If only that info had come my way *before* I paid the application fee! Best of luck to anyone else who applied there.

I would speak with professors at your school about this. I've definitely heard the "one tier (or more) down" hiring rule, at least straight out of your Ph.D. I know some Rutgers graduates teaching at big state school programs (John Finamore comes to mind at U of Iowa - and he's pretty brilliant). If one in the hand is really worth two in the bush at this point, I'd take the Rutgers admit (if you would be happy there). If you're going to always be thinking "What if", I say do the MA or Post-Bacc and reapply. Of course, you run the risk of not getting in somewhere after doing the MA or post-bacc, and that puts you in an odd situation. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees here, so these are difficult waters to navigate.

Waitlisted at Iowa. I know they've had major budget issues and I'm not exactly the best fit for the program with my interests in late ancient religion. All the best to everyone else who applied here!

Thanks for the pub suggestions. I'm going to look for a house/townhouse with a back yard since I have a dog and he likes to run around - I've heard this shouldn't be too pricey in Tallahassee.
