Many, many people receive that email. They only elect 6 a year and it's almost never an MA student, so no worries. Notre Dame has not met yet for MTS decisions. You're all fine on that front. This is a silly process and it's a crapshoot. You've done all you can and worrying about it isn't going to change any decisions (for better or worse).

ECS' committee hasn't even met yet. The applications were just due the other day (the 1st or 2nd, I think). They do the Ph.D applications, then MTS, then ECS here, so I imagine they will meet within a couple of weeks. I think I heard back at the end of March.

A friend has already received an admissions offer for NT. I imagine all the subfields meet around the same time and extend the offers at the same time, but I don't know.- 348 replies

I also just got an email from Duke for the Ph.D in Religion (Early Christianity) and was rejected. I don't think I was a great fit for the department, so this decision makes perfect sense to me. Good luck to everyone who applied!- 348 replies

I imagine so, though I'm not sure. I think the interview weekend includes all subfields, so I suspect that the committee meetings take place at the same time as well.- 348 replies

I know that CJA and HC at Notre Dame are meeting this week and should be informing people soon about the interview weekend (which I think is the 19th of February). Good luck to everyone who applied.- 348 replies

Congrats on the interview at Vandy. That's very exciting. I've been told by my advisor here that the interview is really just a weirdo test. Do you know if Vanderbilt invites more people than they accept or are you the only one? If you're the only one, this is more of a wine and dine session. If there are others, that's cool too. It's probably wise to have read an article or book by the people there in your field so that you can discuss their work. It's also probably wise to have some general questions to ask. And just don't be a weirdo. Good luck!- 348 replies

That is an awkward situation. Is there anyone there with whom you can talk? Any current students or professors you know well enough to discuss this?

I was assuming PTS is funded.
-
This is the only time in your entire graduate career where you are in control. They cannot force you to make a decision prior to the April 15th deadline, though they may try or make it sound as though you have no choice. I would inform them politely that while PTS' offer is attractive, that you want to make an informed decision (as you said) and this requires waiting on all your application responses to come back. They are, by virtue of being in the little agreement amongst all the graduate schools, not allowed to renege your offer for doing so. Good luck and congrats on such a strong start to the decision season!

Just a heads up for anyone applying to Duke Ph.D - I just got a letter from a professor at Duke telling me that my statement of purpose came out garbled because of a mechanical error. At any rate, I take this to mean that they are now looking at applications. I know this is not really "helpful" information, but it's information nonetheless.- 348 replies

LateAntique replied to TheHymenAnnihilator's topic in Religion
Fortunately I had all my work done before my applications were due. I am having to resist the temptation to go back and read my statements of purpose and my writing sample again. They are submitted and giving them another read will do absolutely nothing for me.- 348 replies

I mentioned all (3) schools to which I'm applying on my application. I don't think it hurts you. I think it's just about collecting data for the graduate school. I sincerely doubt any admissions committee has said, "He/she applied elsewhere? Well no thanks!"- 348 replies

How are everyone's applications coming along? I just submitted two out of the three I have to do. It's going to be an interesting next few months - hopefully people around here will start hearing back in late January so we can have some more activity around here.- 348 replies

Good luck! I think that's how we all feel about our programs. I waver between feeling like I totally belong at ND and feeling like they probably let me in on accident. And thanks to jdmhotness. My hope is that we'll all get in where we want.- 348 replies

Poor GRE Scores...should I explain to admissions?
LateAntique replied to MeredithH's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
You do not need to even mention your scores. 1) Being barely below 90% is hardly worth mentioning. 2) Even if your scores were actually "poor", you wouldn't want to mention them. Admissions committees will see the scores and they will be what they will be. Your statement of purpose is about explaining how great you are, not highlighting things you think are not so great. Your scores are fine. -

LateAntique replied to TheHymenAnnihilator's topic in Religion
I promised myself going into this that if I wasn't okay with teaching high school (or something else), I wouldn't do the Ph.D. Part of me thinks, "I'm here because I want to learn more and because it's interesting." Then I look at student loans and think, "I'm going to need to pay these at some point." At any rate, things have worked out thus far, so I'm sure they'll continue to.- 348 replies

LateAntique replied to TheHymenAnnihilator's topic in Religion
I'm a little bummed that the board isn't more active this year. I felt like there were more posts a couple of years ago when I was applying to my MA. At any rate, I wonder if any of you are choosing schools to which you will apply based on economic factors. That is, because of how the overall economy is, coupled with how bad the hiring scene in academia is right now (particularly in religion), are you only applying to top schools? Or are you casting your nets nice and wide and taking what you can get? I think there are schools that I would have considered if this were 25 years ago, but I'm at the point that if I don't get into one of the top programs, there seems to be little to no reason to do a Ph.D. When even students from top programs are having trouble finding TT jobs, why go elsewhere? The one exception I can see is if one wants to teach in a school affiliated with their denomination and said school doesn't care about having a degree from Yale or Princeton. Any thoughts?- 348 replies
