TXInstrument11 - Funny you should ask, I actually indicated his lab as one of my top choices based on my military aviation experience and intended career path. I think overall I mentioned 3 potential POI's. So you're working in that lab, but have interests elsewhere? Ironically, I was working in a lab that was rather different than the direction I was trying to go as well. It's interesting how things work out.

Wow, chirp chirp, nothing. Well those applicants are out there somewhere.
-
Congrats to everyone! Hopefully these other schools jump on the bandwagon and start sending out acceptances.

Are there any other Human Factors applicants our there? I applied to 3 HF programs this cycle. University of Central Florida Catholic University of America University of South Dakota I know it's a smaller field, but to me it's a really exciting direction to go with psychology. Just want to see if there is anyone else on here wrapping up their applications, or playing the waiting game at this point.

No interview offers yet, I think most of the schools I applied to don't require interviews, I didn't apply only to I/O programs however. As of yet, I haven't heard back from a single school for I/O though. For I/O I applied to: Auburn University - Not required University of Central Florida - Not required DePaul University - Not required Roosevelt University - ???? Seattle Pacific University - Interview required Florida Institute of Technology - Not required Claremont Graduate University - Not required This is what I am tracking for these schools. For Roosevelt they just started the program 2 years ago, looking through the results search it seems someone had to interview last year.

I am over waiting at this point. Can't believe it will still be about 2 months before most of the answers roll in. I've seen people get picked up off of the waitlist as late as 14-15 April last year. Talk about last minute!

When it comes to finances you'll be hard pressed to find people trying to lure you down the psychology path. The money just isn't there when compared against being a physician. The honor seems to fade away when you are living in poverty. You need to do what you care about. Did you apply to Ph.D programs this cycle?

This back and forth had me laughing. You've mad your decision, head back to class and knock out that O-Chem, study for the MCAT, and continue on your path.

I have about 13 backup plans. Some involve just going back to work at various possible organizations. (I currently work now) Some involve pursuing a different academic route entirely. (I spent $2500 this year in applications for psychology, not sure I would do it again.) Some involve working, taking some additional undergrad track coursework, and then trying to go back to grad school a little later down the line. (Not necessarily for the same field, the competition is ridiculous.) Side note; If you see me on the news, plan "13" is in effect. J/K

Fall 2015 Applicants - What Programs Did You Apply For?
KW58D replied to JoePianist's topic in Psychology Forum
I have a bit of a spread of program types, they aren't in my ranked order since I haven't actually finished ranking them yet, but here are the locations: University of Central Florida DePaul University of Hawaii Auburn University University of South Dakota Catholic University of America Seattle Pacific University Roosevelt University Claremont Graduate University Palo Alto University Florida Institute of Technology -
What was/will be your deciding factor?
KW58D replied to athlete2academic's topic in Psychology Forum
My order is: Funding Program fit/ Mentor Reputation Location Any other aspects are probably a wash in my eyes anyway. With the schools I applied to I shouldn't get past all those criteria without having a decision already made. -
Most of the places I am applying do not interview. Since my earliest application cutoffs just elapsed a few days ago I can't imagine any interview invites have already been sent out. The joy of waiting.

I'm not terribly worried about it. Since these programs are designed to shape graduates into potential faculty members it really isn't surprising that these students would be part of the admissions process. Did I know this occurs, no, but I would not have done or worded anything different. I write to my audience which is program personnel, regardless of being a student or faculty member.

I had 3 primary LOR writers, and 3 secondary in case anyone fell through. Luckily that didn't happen. Not a fun process.

How many schools are you applying to this year?
KW58D replied to kaswing's topic in Psychology Forum
I am applying to 15, was 16, but I nixed one of the apps in the eleventh hour. I chiseled that 16 down from about 30 possibles. -
8 Aplications done, 7 more to go. Can't wait to get those last ones out. This has all but consumed my life the last 12 months.

Rose Tyler, I sent you a PM.

Clinical Psychology Ph.D. applicant thread Fall 2015
KW58D replied to hummm's topic in Psychology Forum
I didn't follow up with any until I got a reply back. The longest I had seen to get a reply back was 6 weeks. Most were closer to 2 weeks though. Some email you back within a day. It really depends on a lot of factors. I have had a couple that never replied (4%) and I considered contacting them again, but ended up just talking to different prospective professors. -
Clinical Psychology Ph.D. applicant thread Fall 2015
KW58D replied to hummm's topic in Psychology Forum
I'm nearing the end of writing my SOP's. I need to get all my transcripts in order, my letters are all currently being written, but otherwise everything feels on track. 1. Certainly ask them if they will be taking on any students. I know people who have applied only to find out afterward and wasted all the time and money. 2. I have talked to a few on the phone, but the majority via email. Sometimes they take a while to get back to you, but they usually always do. 3. Your interests should be pretty specific and related. To fit your scenario, there was a program I was interested in, but majority of faculty specialized in a child area. I mentioned my interests (adult focused), and related it to theirs, but they still felt like I probably wasn't a good fit. I am not going to apply since I think I would not really be a competitive applicant based on my interests. Good luck to you! I'll be applying to a few clinical programs this cycle, but also some other areas too, so we will see how it all works out. -
Rose Tyler, Sorry to hear about your troubles. These are the kinds of things that irritate me about the application process. I won't miss this. Yet if you go clinical psych. you can expect a few more years of these types of hoops to jump through. Add in the shell game of how applicants are selected and it turns into a full blown carnival. Good luck on your other apps though!
-
I think your stats are certianly good enough to land you in a strong (funded) program. Sounds like you are on track with everything. I would also shoot for some mid level programs in case you don't get into the high tier, but it will all depend on how much funding you will really need and your finances.
-
I have tossed out all the schools that have abnormal requirements like this. There are already enough hoops to jump through and I think its silly to act like they need that test to differentiate you from other applicants. I'm fine with writing samples since we all have them already from undergrad or other grad programs. But I am not going to take an additional test for a single school. You might have enough time to study, but I've heard the test is actually pretty difficult. I've heard that even psychology majors can struggle a bit. Either way good luck! I'm applying to an array of programs this year. I'm hopeful, but more or less full of anxiety.

I'll toss my 2 cents in... I've had admin members say that addressing a weak point of your app can shed light to the reasoning, yet have had others say that it brings attention to an area that you don't want, or it might be viewed as quibbling. To stay on the safe side I will not discuss any area I think is weak in my app because I don't want to hurt myself more. At the most I might in a round about way say how I look forward to improving that weakness through the program. All that in 1000 words or less of course!

National Louis University- Community Psychology Ph.D.
KW58D replied to ams8093's topic in Psychology Forum
While I am unfamiliar with the program, I would avoid an unfunded program that has such limited research opportunities. Not only will this potentially put you in financial hardship (also not familiar with your financial status), but you might end up with a degree that doesn't really lead to better job prospects. A lot of these unfunded programs seem to end up with that result. Certainly not the case for everyone and attending a funded program won't gurantee viable employment, but it seems to have better results than the alternative. -
Kaswing, I'm applying all over the country. But I am applying to UCF for HF. I had a lot of high tier schools on my list initially, but have weeded a lot of them out over time based on various factors. I think I'm a competitive applicant except my GRE's came in just above average. Most of the schools I tossed out either commanded near perfect GRE scores, or significant research experience within the faculty members specific field (I have 1 year of volunteer time in long term projects where I won't get published.) I've communicated via email, phone, and in person with numerous faculty members from varying programs and many were great. Others made me realize I probably didn't want to go there. I'd start contacting faculty members you'd possibly like to work with soon. Does this help...? I can't be sure. At the very least it gives you a little more inside knowledge than you can read on their website. My most valuable angle is that I have the GI Bill benefits available to me. Luckily this makes it so I'm not reliant on getting into a fully funded program. After watching peoples app:acceptance ratio during last years cycle I decided I needed to pursue a majority schools that weren't the "reach" level programs for my stats. If you go through last years threads, it looks like majority of applicants got into at best 3/15 programs, and for many still 0/15. So It changed my strategy a bit. Not trying to be discouraging or sway you just giving my reasons. Also, I tossed out a lot of schools that had very non-standard application procedures. I'm just not interested in playing those games. I'm not going to ask my LOR writers to write 15 different letters and the schools know that you are not applying solely to their program, so why act like it? Just some of my 2 cents.
