  1. I'm also taking another crack at Liam Murphy's Moral Demands in Nonideal Theory. It was one of the more difficult books I read as a grad student. http://www.amazon.com/Demands-Nonideal-Theory-Oxford-Ethics/dp/0195171950 WebRep currentVote noRating noWeight
  2. I was thinking CUNY too. I had a friend who was wait-listed there. She talked to a few grad students, and they advised her to pick another program with a more friendly environment.
  3. That list seems outdated. Some of those programs don't even offer PhDs in philosophy anymore (Florida came to mind). The APA published a list of PhD programs in philosophy last year (it's a gargantuan PDF), but that list seems incomplete too. I take it that it's in the interest of graduate programs to make themselves known. However, it's probably not in the interest of applicants for graduate programs to make themselves known. I would rather have you lot not know about X University since I don't want to compete with you for a spot at X University.
  4. I recently finished the two seasons of American Horror Story that are available on Netflix. What a fantastic show.
  5. Fantastic news!
  6. The university is closed because of the storm. Does this affect their online apps? I've emailed the appropriate staff members. I'll post any information as soon as I have it.
  7. Orrrrr snowstorm.
  8. I tried to apply at the last minute, but the online application is closed. This is strange. The deadline posted on their website is Jan. 7th. I guess this could mean that Jan 7th marks the deadline and that the last day to apply to UWO is Jan. 6th, but I took it to mean that Jan 7th is the last day to apply. Is anyone else experiencing difficulties?
  9. I just started watching Game of Thrones last week. As if I don't need any more stress. No spoilers please.
  10. That makes a little more sense. In my case, the transcripts are clear and the course titles are very straightforward (e.g. "Ethics" or "Philosophy of Mind"), but just because the information I provided was redundant doesn't mean that it will be in every case.
  11. Why not just look at my transcripts then? The only information that isn't on there is the instructor who taught the course. I can only imagine a few, really insignificant ways that that information would affect my application.
  12. If a school is going to require that I type out every philosophy course I've taken, the instructor, and the grade I received, then why would they also make me spend twenty dollars to send them my transcript? Somebody's being lazy and I (we) are paying for it.
  13. dfindley?
  14. They obviously have different editions of the text.
  15. Plot twist: you then roll up your sleeve and reveal a tattoo that reads "1. The world is all that is the case. 1.1 The world is the totality of facts not things ..."
  16. I'm constantly involved in this conversation with my hair stylist, dentist, doctor, etc. : "What do you study?" "Philosophy." "Oh, so, what's like, your philosophy?" "…"
  17. I'm still working on my applications, actually. I'm trying to smooth out my writing sample and make my SOIs as flashy as I can. I get the sense that some of you (most of you actually) completed and submitted your application before December even started. Is anyone else submitting their applications just before the deadline?
  18. I want to be clear about what I meant so that I don't sound like that guy (I'm not implying that anyone here misunderstood me). I don't just mean that anticipating rejection will lead to less grief, but that it will (likely) lead to earnest preparation of alternatives, and earnest preparation of alternatives will (likely) result in an easier and more enjoyable year off. in short, please don't think of me as a pessimist, but as someone who is encouraging a forward-thinking, "go-getter" attitude. Think of me as the fucking Tony Robbins of this board.
  19. This isn't my first rodeo, and let me say that things are much easier if you do not expect to get in somewhere.
  20. I don't doubt that, but the rejects had to wait until late April. There was a lot of gripe on this site because of it.
  21. Right. Good response. Those stellar students will usually receive word in early Feb. and the rest of us will have to wait until March. UC Riverside usually waits until Mercury and Venus align with the Earth before they send pigeons out to each of their applicants.
  22. That sounds terrible. At least you'll stick out to the committee members.
  23. Tulane requires that you mail a copy of your writing sample to the department (what is this, the stone age?). My writing sample didn't make it before the deadline. In fact, it only made it there this morning. The university is closed and they will not be able to receive it until the second of January. Any advice? Think this will hurt my chances? I'm not too worried; I just need to be reassured.
  24. It's just fantastic that you have a dfindley quote in your signature.
