  1. “This was not brought to our attention by either the candidate or his employer. We are looking into this matter thoroughly including requesting all relevant information to fully evaluate his candidacy.” -Rutgers Spokesperson I find it hard to believe that Rutgers wasn't aware of the allegations presented to Ludlow in 2012 and Northwestern's Office of Sexual Harassment's findings. However, I find it just as hard to believe that Rutgers was aware of them while making the offer to Ludlow, especially with the growing concern over workplace climate. I'll just do the Arcesilaus thing. When presented with equipollent reasons for and against some matter, just suspend belief.
  2. We could post GIFs and cat memes.
  3. My least favorite philosophers are the ones I can't understand. Spinoza, Leibniz, and Davidson. That's probably my fault and not theirs. I've always hated John Haugeland's essay "The Intentionality All Stars". He's not my least favorite philosopher, but that's definitely my least favorite essay. The baseball mnemonic device is terrible, and I'm 99% sure that he refers to philosophical positions by the wrong name (what the hell is right-wing phenomenology?).
  4. I'm guessing Duke or UC Riverside.
  5. He was supposed to move to Rutgers this fall. I wonder how that will play out. Will Rutgers drop him? How much bad press will Rutgers catch for hiring him (I'm positive the allegation would have turned up on a background check)?
  6. So much action! Anyone want to claim the South Carolina acceptance?
  7. Wow. That's excellent news that you've both been accepted to PhD programs within a couple of hours from each other.
  8. Did you read the post? It sounds like Dfindley got his first rejection.
  9. Congrats! Not my AOI, but I'm a big fan of some of Casey Perin's recent work on academic skepticism. I'd be a little starstruck if I got an email from him.
  10. Dude, it's not reddit. Don't worry about downvotes.
  11. Weird, their deadline hasn't even expired. That must mean you're a stellar applicant! Downvotes for you!
  12. To be even snarkier, if most schools have 0-3 applicants it might be the the case that there are no applicants.
  13. I did my masters at a very large (60k+) university, with a fairly large philosophy program. In my first year 3 undergraduates applied to graduate programs in philosophy and in my second year, none applied to graduate programs in philosophy.
  14. Did you ever meet our friend David Findley? Although, I suppose the more serious problem was that he was an ass and not that he failed to be anonymous.
  15. Interesting. It seems that the faculty at Boulder didn't know that the report would be made public (at least, according to this source). http://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2014/02/colorado-faculty-were-told-apa-committees-report-would-not-be-made-public.html
  16. Wow. You're right. It seems a lot worse that I thought.
  17. Wow. Thanks for the article. Sounds like something pretty serious happened, but that they are taking the necessary steps to avoid a catastrophe of McGinn-like proportions.
  18. Fun fact: Nietzsche was a composer himself, and he was quite good.
  19. Neither am I. L.A. is just not for me.
  20. Perhaps, not this. I'll rely on the law of excluded middle here: it was either this or not this.
  21. Perhaps, this.
  22. I'm really surprised that there aren't more people reporting Phil Science as an AOI. It's a pretty sexy field right now, with a lot of graduate programs specializing or offering programs in that area.
  23. I suspected that ethics would be popular, but political philosophy. Wow. It's great that so many people are interested in this, but dammit, that means that I have to compete against more of you.
  24. Ha. The best part is that I'm not even sure what you're raising your eyebrows about: the claim that RB learned a lot from late Wittgenstein or the claim that RB's views are closest to Hegel's.
