I have also been admitted without an assitantship at NIU. I am still waiting to hear back from Virginia Tech, Western Michigan, Brandeis, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee, but given my interests and the program's placement record, it will be difficult for me to turn down NIU (assuming the tuition waiver comes through). 

Take the GRE very seriously. Make sure to at least score somewhere in the 90th+ percentile in verbal, and aim for at least 75th+ percentile in math. writing doesn't matter at all (within reason). Take a look at the scores posted from accepted students on grad cafe (it's disgusting how many of them are perfect or near-perfect).

Don't bitch about how the GRE is irrelevant to philosophical promise - everyone knows that. But the fact of the matter is, sub-par scores can and will likely get you shut out. That's just how the system works. 

I managed to get accepted in the 20-40 range and wait-listed in the top 15 with a GRE verbal of 160 (84%). But this is the lowest successful score I've seen, and I know it hurt me at other places.The rest of my stats are perfect (4.0 GPA from a well-ranked school, excellent letters from top people in their field, lots of graduate classes and conferences, publishable writing sample, etc.). 

In retrospect, I wish I took the time to study thousands of arcane vocab words. If you are well-read, you may already have a high vocabulary and get in the 90s without studying. Take a practice exam or two to find out. If not, study for several months. Flash cards all day every day is the only way.

Having spent eight weeks once exclusively reading the greater logic, I'd be very curious to hear how exactly its about logic. Also.. doesn't Hegel actually say you have to basically accept the phenomenology to even have the framework in place to read greater logic? I definitely feel like that shouldn't be required to get logic...

Despite the heart attack, it's nice to know that I'm still in the race, and that they'll be meeting soon.

Just got in to UPenn! The department is very high on my list so I'm thrilled! Still in a state of shock...

Just received a Cornell acceptance email from Ted Sider.

So, unless someone is playing an evil prank on me, I believe Jeffrey McDonough just sent me an email admitting me to Harvard!

EDIT: I hope no one hacked into McDonough's email account and sent me a fraudulent email. That is how shocking news of admission is to me. But I'm sooo excited!!!

Did you think that maybe your advisor isn't in the adcom (he isn't, as you said) and that he has better things to do than babysit your application and try to extract adcom decision information every hour of every day? Maybe he didn't think it was your business to know exactly what offers were being sent out to exactly which people the moment it happened?

Can anyone else claim the GSU acceptances? It goes without saying that if it's not your best option, I would be your best friend forever if you declined. Philstudent and I have some drinking too do and we can't do that if we aren't at the same school!
