Fall 2013 English Lit Applicants
Swagato replied to harvardlonghorn's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I've been barely breathing since this week began. One of my top choices met yesterday and I had previously been advised to expect news from them this week. That place tends to notify admits/waitlists/rejects all at once, so it doesn't mean anything. I've also learnt that I am very, very close to possibly making it in--whether a direct admit or a waitlist--at a place that I did not dare hope for, when this round began. In fact, I simply assumed I had no chance whatsoever. If I receive good news from this place, it will quite possibly unhinge me temporarily. I've been re-reading the email communications I received over the weekend. They still don't make sense (as in, how did I of all people end up so close?). I catch myself musing over how life would be there, and I want to smack myself for being silly. I'm close, but yet so far. Still, to have come this far over the past year--if nothing else, it has made me utterly sure that if this round doesn't work out, I'm going right back to the drawing board. And then there's the other waitlist that I have to sit on, hoping something works out there. ...and I have 3 places left to notify, once the above has been taken into consideration. -

Okay. If you are accepted to UChicago and Brown (but more so Chicago) and your professors are "disappointed," you're hanging out with the wrong crowd. Seriously, do you have any idea how massively transformative and hugely respected Chicago's entire English department is? I realise a lot of it has to do with research fit, and sure, you may not (think you) have a good fit, but simply based off what I saw of the English program during my year at Chicago...Bill Brown, Lauren Berlant, WJT Mitchell, James Lastra, James Chandler, Hillary Chute, Elaine Hadley, Debbie Nelson...it's a bloody who's who of big names. I have no idea where you're getting your information or what your specialty (prospective) is, but you really need better information IMHO. "And I struggle to find faculty members at Tier 1 research institutions from any of the universities I've been accepted into." I really don't know what to even say to this except shake my head. It's frankly a bit annoying to see someone be accepted to some of the best departments in English around and grouse about it, out of, if I may be blunt, sheer ignorance. Edit again: David Alworth *just* graduated from Chicago. He's now an assistant professor at Harvard if I remember rightly. And, really? Have you even looked at Chicago's placement during these tough-as-nails times? Here: http://english.uchicago.edu/prospective/recent-job-placements -
Standard.

I take it you are waitlisted there? Edit: And on that note, I'd make the same request to anyone who was accepted to Pittsburgh Film Studies and knows that they will be declining. Please let them know that you won't be accepting the offer as soon as you can.

They don't know what they want to do, basically. -

If one emails a POI and promptly receives a reply, and if two excerpts from said reply read: "I read your file with real interest" and "Your application is certainly still in consideration"--how does one interpret this, beyond face-value? I'm especially curious as to what this forum thinks about the first comment; the second probably just means exactly what it says. -

I'm a bit confused. The graduate coordinator for Stanford MTL indicated that calls have *not* been made. Yet there is one MTL post up. So either that call was an unofficial one, or it was a sad fake. -

Actually, this program has yet to notify. They will (ought to) by the end of March. That's why I'm so torn up over it--between excitement (i.e. my project is timely, they may look favourably on it due to the confluence of interests/scholarship/their own departmental designs, etc.) and not daring to hope. -

So. It turns out that one of my dream programs is actually having a conference RIGHT NOW (yesterday and today) on a certain sub-area of film and visual studies. This sub-area is only recently gaining critical interest, and we're seeing a lot of action. It is the same area that my whole writing sample and SOP are about. I had no idea about such a conference. I'm trying not to build up my hopes. But aren't such synchronicities the stuff PhD admit hopefuls dream about? My project is so. eerily. in line with. the whole conference. And I knew before applying that this department is indeed picking up steam and moving into that area (hence why I applied). Meh. -

Don't know if this is the right thread, but could anyone claim the Stanford Modern Thought & Lit acceptance? Any other info? -
Congratulations, EbDim9. Given Brown's past results on the survey, I assume they have notified everyone--meaning it's a no-go for me. I'd love to know more of your background/proposed interests, and anything else you know about this year's admission (cohort size, etc.). Feel free to PM!

I emailed in response to that earlier notice, actually. I really hope we made that cut. The response to my query just mentioned that the adcom will meet Tuesday, and that we should expect to hear that week.

Who got into Cornell for Eng Lit? I thought they'd show up here or in the other thread for Eng Lit... -
FYI: Rochester adcom will meet Tuesday.

Don'tHate: I'm pretty sure the norm is that better-funded programs (read: more prestigious programs) don't make you TA right away, perhaps at least 2nd year onward. Other programs (read: not as well funded/need the manpower)... -

With those dates I don't see why you can't put in a politely worded inquiry. I would reach out to either your POI if you had any or the graduate coordinator. -
Oh my, no, no. I do apologise if I worried you needlessly. Yes, I did mean that they are in the timeframe for notifying, i.e., we should (going by past years) be seeing notifications from them roughly around this week or next. How are we doing so far? This thread has seen fewer people than last year. I do wish the Chicago admit would come forth--I've so many questions! Same with Berkeley. Congratulations to all the admits so far, and hopefully we'll all have somewhere to go this fall.

^ Let the record show that ErnestPWorrell has sinister motivations. -
Eh? Where'd you get that from, filmophile? Edit: There's nothing on the results board to indicate that they have notified. The other possibility is that they have notified people who aren't even on this forum and that you've heard this from them, perhaps?

Could we get a list together of how many people here are accepted to Pittsburgh, or are waitlisted, but believe that they either will not go, or at least are holding out for other ("better fit") options? My intent is both to try and develop a clearer sense of how likely it may be that I make it off the waitlist, as well as to offer anyone else in a similar position some more information. -
It looks like U. Rochester, Brown, Stanford (Modern Thought & Lit) are in the timeframe for notifying...and Yale/Harvard might notify in a week's time or so.
