  1. I just officially accepted my offer from UW-Milwaukee, after being admitted off the funding wait list (which includes paid TA-ship). I had previously posted that I would probably accept...but now its official! I can't wait...(and still can't believe I got in with such a great deal!)
  2. Thanks! Looks like we'll be trading places...If i accept, I'll be moving from LA to Milwaukee. (though after UWM i'm hoping to reapply to UCR) Whoa..I'd never heard of these! I'll definitely be considering this option...seems like way less of a hassle, too.
  3. I just got an email saying I will receive a funded offer from UW-Milwaukee! I had been on the wait list for funding...so glad the wait is over, I'm very excited. (have to discuss the actual logistics of moving, etc. but will most probably be accepting this offer!)
  4. I think you are being a little presumptuous here. I did not vote for Tufts in my ranking, and I do have an idea about the programs. According to the OP, who created the poll, there is no set criteria as to how one ranks them. I am a person who values funding. I applied to many of the programs in the poll, Tufts purposefully not being among them...not because I thought it was a bad school, and not because I didn't think it was worth applying to based on faculty or placement, etc. but because there is absolutely no way that I am willing to go in debt on tuition and living expenses in the city. I'm sure Tufts is a great school, but I chose not to rank it top-5 based on the criterion I had when I applied to the programs
  5. My head is about to explode having as I wait to hear back from UW-milwaukee about the funding wait list!!! how are you supposed to get anything else done during this?!
  6. After I posted about CSULA I received an acceptance from SFSU!
  7. Just heard back that I was accepted to CalState LA. No word on funding yet...does anyone know if they typically offer much funding? I haven't seemed to find good info on that...
  8. I posted this this other day (i think i may have put it in the wrong thread) I have yet to hear back from Brandeis, Western Michigan, Cal State LA, SFState, and University of Victoria (all MA programs)—which is almost half of the applications I sent out. Its pretty late in the game by now, is it safe to assume that these are all unofficial rejections? If so, is it normal for so many MA program not to respond at all?

  10. I just recently read a bunch of introductions to philosophy of mind in order to get a broad perspective on how the field is being presented. I enjoyed William Jaworksi's introduction the most. It was pretty balanced, organized well, and pretty straight forward. However, the last 100 pages (of 350 pages total) were essentially his argument for a renewal of hylomorphism. I read some of it, but didn't finish the ending because it really should have been another book altogether. John Heil's introduction is also good. Get the 3rd edition if you read this one. Last, I liked Jaegwon Kim's Philosophy of Mind, 3rd ed. He is very knowledgeable and presents a lot of angles and their opposing views in a good way—although, sometimes his own perspective colors the argument pretty heavily.
  11. Though I haven't officially done so, I am planning on accepting my offer from UW-Milwaukee.
  12. Anyone considering (or know someone planning on) declining an offer from the UW-Milwaukee MA program?
  13. Thanks for the advice! In my email I included something along these lines and I already received a very helpful response from the professor
  14. I had a question about inquiring about the status of the waitlist for funding… I am planning on emailing a professor in the program with a few other questions anyways, and was somewhat hesitant to ask about funding. I'm on a "short" waiting list and didn't know if it was a bad idea to ask about it directly – they did say in the acceptance email that they would let me know when/if it became available. Any suggestions?
  15. I just got one just now, and my name is at the very beginning of the alphabet, so i don't think that's their order...who knows!?

    MA Thread

Just out of curiosity: if a program informs you specifically that you are on a "short wait list" for funding or admission...is generally sort of a formality, or do you actually stand a good chance of receiving funding/admission? I have started to get my hopes up, and I don't know if I am setting myself up to be more disappointed than I should be if I don't get past the wait list. For anyone who has received this type of message, did you eventually get good news or did it not come through?
  17. Yeah, checking out Fuller is not be a bad idea. However I would probably look into the work of Nancey Murphy or Veli-Matti Karkkainen rather than Crisp...But only because Crisp seems pretty committed to dualist perspectives; also Murphy and Karkkainen seem to engage more straightforwardly with philosophy of science, mind, etc. (i'm showing my personal preferences, I know…) I am also interested in theology and philosophy programs and am just finishing a theology degree... However I did not have much luck with being admitted to PhD philosophy programs; I have only been admitted to the MA programs I applied to. ... I'm still waiting on funding information for a couple of them, and depending I may have to do another MA before being admitted to PhD (unless, of course, I decided to just do systematic theology for PhD). It seems to be a more difficult switch then I first expected--moving from theology to philosophy.

    MA Thread

For those who are going to be accepting an offer at an MA program: What are the top aspects of an MA program you are considering while making your decision (if you got into more than 1 program)? there doesn't appear to be huge differences in areas of focus since most programs are still concerned with strengthening one's foundation, writing skills, etc. Also, there doesn't seem to be a set ranking between schools—I have looked at placement records...though they vary somewhat, some are pretty similar. I've seen this: http://www.philosophicalgourmet.com/maprog.asp but there is no real ranking going on or listing any specifics. So for instance, what are some of the deciding factors between NIU and WMU? or between them and UWM? Does it mostly just come down to faculty or location? Obviously a funded offer would make a huge difference, but I assume that some on this board have received funded offers from more than 1 program... This might be too open of a question—i know that the decision making process is different for everyone—but if you have any thoughts, i'd love to hear them.
  19. Finally heard back from UW-Milwaukee...was accepted! really excited to hear about the possibility of funding. I'm not sure how much they give or typically offer, but I am supposedly on a "short waiting list" for it! first real acceptance so far...so this comes as a relief! (not to mention it was a top choice!)
  20. Thanks! I was hoping to hear that about WMU, but I wasn't sure if there was any basis for that thought. Wow thanks. I will def. PM you if I get accepted!
  21. Does anyone have any idea when UW-Milwaukee and Brandeis will send out notifications for their MA programs? Also, am I correct in thinking that Western Michigan has only sent out their first round of acceptances or are those all out?
  22. I just got a letter from a school stating that they are missing a transcript (which they actually aren't missing anything, but for some reason the school got listed twice); my "decision status" reads "pending file completion." Does the fact that they haven't already rejected me and requested this file say anything about the possibility of acceptance...or is this just standard procedure for filing purposes, etc.? Anyone had a similar experience in the past (or during this season)??
  23. Whoever posted either of the NIU acceptances via the website... Did the indicator stating "complete" switch to "accepted" today—or could it have changed when they sent out their other acceptances on tuesday? in other words, did you not check the website until today or had you been checking it and it changed today? I'm way too anxious about this one, haha. Thanks!
  24. I am feeling the same way with Virginia Tech. Think itll be today or tomorrow? I am also wondering when UW-Milwaukee is going to post decisions...I thought they would have been out by now for some reason
