  1. Okay, Riverside. Today is your day, right?! (Please?)
  2. SAME. This definitely seems like one of the worst parts of not getting in...if you want to re-apply, what are you supposed to focus on changing if you don't know what factors weren't strong/interesting/etc.
  3. Re: "they" as plural, I found this interesting: singular they, word of the year
  4. It sorta looks like the Cornell acceptances were sent out all at once, given how closely in time they were posted. Hopefully thats not the case...but if so: bummer.
  5. I've noticed that a bunch of people mentioned Nietzsche as a favorite. I am just curious: has anyone read the newly published/translated (I think for the first time in English), Anti-Education? They are a series of lectures Nietzsche gave in 1872, right between Birth of Tragedy and Schopenhauer as Educator. I've been really meaning to read them, since it seems like many of the themes he develops in those texts are addressed—I'm curious how he presented them to a public audience. Here is a link, if you're curious: Anti-Education. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you've read it.
  6. Yes! I have only rejections thus far. But have yet to hear from over half the programs I applied to; but the majority of those left are predicted to release this week. So this week will be a good week, I hope! Good luck everyone!
  7. I feel safe (though, very disappointed even though it was a long shot) in presuming a non-acceptance. What I'm not sure about is whether Yale does a waitlist. If they do, then perhaps you shouldn't presume a rejection; but if they don't, then sadly, yes—it is a rejection. ...At least, that is how I'm thinking at this point. Does that seem like a fair assumption? And does anyone know if they do WL?
  8. Thanks for this. I, too, was beginning to be disheartened about not hearing from Georgetown today.
  9. Congrats! Did you just receive the call, or was it from earlier this morning??
  10. I've been wanting to read Schopenhauer for a while...but I just haven't seemed to find the time yet. While I definitely wouldn't characterize German philosophy in the same way that you have, it is helpful to know that World as W&R is clearly written; or at least less of a slog? I read Nietzsche's Gay Science during the fall and that quickly became one of my favorite texts (it, along with Human, All too Human, and Daybreak are my favorite philosophical 'trilogy'). Other than that, I really liked Alva Noë's work on perception for a while. But strangely I have found myself less interested in Noë's work as he has shifted to write about art, even though art is something I love as much as philosophy. I also always enjoy reading Walter Benjamin (his "Theses on the Philosophy of History" is incredible) and Giorgio Agamben—I find both authors' writing style at once beautiful, almost hypnotic, and sharply critical. I also love reading Culture and Value from Wittgenstein...There are so many others! Its hard to try to figure out who my favorite is...
  11. Wait a second...Stanford is predicted for tomorrow? Have i just missed it, or has no one discussed this yet? Are we relatively safe is expecting to hear from them (if not tomorrow) sometime this week?
  12. I wish I could upvote this many more times (and that upvoting meant something much more significant)
  13. not venting about admissions...but did anyone else watch the x-files episode last night? why was it so bad!? the first 4 new episodes have been pretty good, but last night's was pretty disappointing.
  14. Yea, I'm also wondering when their decision will be sent out. I really had no idea when to expect to hear from them...so its helpful to know you were told by someone there that it'd be the end of last week. I wonder if that means we weren't accepted? From what I have heard that program admits anywhere from 0-5 students a year (0 if they are excited about any of the apps), so it could be that those who got it are just not on gradcafe. But, of course, that speculation could be wrong. Anyway, it would be nice to know the status of that program.
  15. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MINERVA! she looks like a really fun dog. And, Brooklyn Hercules and her look like a hilarious combo to watch. ...I love having a puppy, but I am really looking forward to when mine is a little older and she can actually play and do things on her own.
  16. Nice! how old is she? I decided to name mine Lou. I've only had her for a week now, but she is already a lot of fun. I really love beagles...I previously had one that had to be put down last summer. So its exciting to have another dog running around.
  17. Good morning all! Welcome to another day full of slightly more anxiety than yesterday.
  18. I'm also working on my thesis...From the work I put in last semester, I've got a relatively strong start on what I'll need to accomplish this semester. I actually have yet to meet with my advisor about what should be done to turn my paper into my thesis. But I'll be meeting them tomorrow, so after that I'll have to get my schedule back in order—I have definitely not been doing as much work as I normally do this past month. I have a similar approach to Lleuven and LisaMadura: breaking the sections up into mini papers. Also, I have a tendency to write my papers as if I'm writing a story, narrative, or at least more poetically than need be...and then I have too long of a paper. But I think this helps in some ways. I find it useful to have a lot of thoughts written out and to use them to write the paper I originally intended to write. Perhaps that is a somewhat roundabout way of working...yet it makes the entire process more enjoyable for me.
  19. So, UC-Riverside's predicted release date is tomorrow. Who else has been anxiously looking forward to hearing back from them? (They are one of my top choices.) Think they'll actually send out some announcements tomorrow? This week at least?
  20. Soon! I was just over at the Super Bowl party with her...i thought you might be there.
  21. I haven't been able to keep busy...been way to distracted. So I got a puppy (a beagle)! haha. I've been wanting a dog for a while now, and thought it'd be as good a time as any to get one!
