  1. I just saw that there were some rejections notifications from Boston University this week, but I haven't heard anything from them. I'm curious if anyone has also not heard anything from them.
  2. I haven't gotten any good news since that decline as well. I'm wondering how they do it at Columbia. Think they've already made an offer to someone on the waitlist...or, think they'll wait until they've heard back from more current admits to redistribute their offers? But, like Kel, I was emailed from a current student—I asked a few questions in return, and they provided very helpful responses. I'm really looking forward to visiting the dept; I'm trying not to get too excited/hopeful, but its hard! haha
  3. I am a student at UWM and I would find it somewhat shocking if no one in next year's cohort applied to phd programs... I don't think it would necessarily speak negatively of the quality of the education, but I would find it shocking nonetheless.
  4. I just want to chime in on your final question: "Is it unethical to accept an offer from one school but go to the open houses of others?" Is the idea that you have definitively accepted an offer, but still go to open houses of the other schools? If so, I am curious why you might attend open houses of other departments, and to why your question pertains to ethics: are you going because—despite having accepted an offer that you were excited—you're still curious if you made the wrong choice? Or, are you going because you are just curious about how other departments handle things in general...maybe just to get a better sense of the academic scene? Or, is it just because you would like to travel? Even if it is yes to any of these, I'm not really sure what you'd be doing wrong on an ethical level. Sure, I hope people aren't going to visit the programs I am WL for when they know they won't accept, therefore prolonging my anxiety...but I don't really feel like that person would be doing something specifically unethical. I mean, isn't it well within your limits as an admit to a program to enjoy the benefits you receive from being accepted? Maybe I'm just missing it, but what is unethical here? Nevertheless, while I don't think it unethical, I'm curious why someone would really want to take the time to visit a department that they have no intention of accepting an offer from. It seems to me that such a desire would point to something interesting...but not necessarily to ethics.
  5. I haven't read all the replies to this thread...so I post this at the risk of repeating something that's already been said: I've been rejected by a lot of programs this year and may have to reapply next year. My GRE scores were 165v, 158q, 5.0w. From what I understand, these scores are not excellent but they are also not bad. In any case, in thinking of the possibility that I may reapply, I've thought that the most important thing I'd do is just work on a different, better writing sample. Perhaps I'm wrong in thinking this, but I do not think my GRE scores were a crucial factor in my receiving rejections.
  6. Oh, good to know. I'm assuming the same will happen with me then.
  7. I just realized that I never heard back from Pitt. My application doesn't indicate anything in particular other than my application status is "submitted." I guess I'll just email to ask about it—but I'm curious if this is the case with anyone else as well...?
  8. Thanks for starting this thread! I'm on the WL, and I am really hoping an offer ends up coming through. Besides the fact that Columbia was among my top-choice programs, it has turned out that I was not accepted or WL at any other departments. So receiving an offer would be doubly exciting. As far as my interests go, I like the history of philosophy and philosophy of mind. With history I plan to work mostly with Kant's legacy/reception through Nietzsche, but also in phenomenology and Pragmatism. And regarding mind, I'm interested in working between cognitive science and phenomenological perspectives—issues surrounding perception, consciousness/self-consciousness, embodiment, and representation. So obviously, there'd several professors I'd be thrilled to work with at Columbia. I'll also be at the Open House, so it will be fun to meet you all and get to see the department!
  9. Does anyone have an idea of how big a wait-list generally is? Specifically I am curious about Columbia's list, which was described by one professor as being a "small wait-list." Its nice to know that the list is not large, but I don't even really have any idea about the size of a typical WL. Could small mean around, say, 5-7 students; or, would it probably be more like somewhere between 10 and 20?
  10. *is on the waitlist for Columbia* ...maaaybe it is a good idea that you decline their offer?
  11. Regarding UW-M, from what I know, there are university-wide fellowships that current MA students are candidates for. If any of them receive a fellowship it brings more funding to the program. The dept takes that funding into account re: the number of students they can accept/fund...so I think they wait until after that is released. Supposedly, the university-wide fellowships are announced in the middle of March—so the decisions probably will be just after that. And, just for reference, when I was admitted I received my acceptance on March 18. But to be clear, this is also speculation...I'm not informed about the admission process details, so there may be (and probably are) other factors at play in the timing of the department releasing acceptance decisions.
  12. Wow! Congrats—Princeton and Columbia—that is a huge achievement! If I may ask, what are your AOI?
  13. Does Stanford do a waitlist? I didn't see any wait lists posted from last year. If so, think they'll be sending them out today?
  14. OHH now I see what you were suggesting. My apologies that my response was hasty. I definitely think that you could trace similar lineages for, e.g., Butler and Agamben, on broader topics in philosophy like you've outlined with philosophy of time (and, I also agree that doing so here isn't really the place). But on a sort of broader view, isn't that part of what makes a tradition a tradition?
  15. I'm not exactly sure what you're saying here. Foucault and Deleuze are extremely important for the continental tradition—at least on equal footing as Kripke is for hardcore analytics. Also, didn't Theory of Justice come out in '71? A Thousand Plateaus came out in '80, and has had at least as far reaching of an influence (...if not more). And about 'mavericks': what about Butler, Agamben, Laurelle, Anidjar, or Asad? Moreover, why must there be a correlative to something that happened in analytic style philosophy in the continental world?
  16. whoa, congrats. wasn't expecting to see that at this time of night
  17. HAH! I'm scared to start partying, since its still probably a long shot at admission, but it does feel good to finally have some sort of positive notification. But, yes, I everyone is invited. Come to the 6th floor of curtain hall ...and bring bourbon in case Jonny is out
  18. Was just notified that I am on the wait-list for Columbia! As I posted on the board I have only received rejections until now...so this comes as a very pleasant surprise.
  19. Yea I've been wondering about that program, too. That would be my dream program, but for some reason I just lost hope about it and assumed they already accepted the few people they accept and didn't send out rejections yet. But I must also say: I have no basis for that assumption...I think I am just being down since I haven't been accepted anywhere. So hopefully we hear from them very soon! Good luck!
  20. If that UCR post is real, then maybe they read this and decided to wait until Sunday to release
  21. I'm not really sure which thread to ask this question in but this might be the right one...I see that John Hopkins has several waitlist notifications that have been posted. However, I only see 1 acceptance up. Based on the info, which of these options (if either) seems correct: (a) Because the WL have been sent out, the acceptances probably have as well—just that no one posted an acceptance on the board. (b) They sent out WL, but there will probably be acceptances this coming week? Or...the third option: (c) It is just too hard to guess because every department does it different just to make us go crazy.
  22. OK, Riverside...You're going to release in the next hour, right??
  23. Soo...those John Hopkins waitlists and admit from a few hours ago: think we'll be seeing more admits today? Does it seem weird that there was only one admit but a few waitlists?
  24. With only rejection so far, I have already begun to put in motion my most immediate plan B: applying for adjunct positions . ...maybe I'll have some better luck landing a job that pays hardly anything (*sigh* but even these positions are difficult to secure).
