  1. Just a friendly reminder to all you 1 Year HBSW Orillia students, that we have a facebook group and are all dying to meet you! Come join the conversation https://www.facebook.com/groups/258019147700354/
  2. Sorry to ask again, but is there anyone from the 2014/15 cohort of Lakehead's HBSW that can pass along the textbook list for the 1000 level summer course (or even the Fall semester, for that matter)? Just trying to get a head start on some of the theories so that hopping back into acadamia isn't such a rough transition Thanks!
  3. Attention Lakehead Orillia Students! You can find the link to our facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/258019147700354/ Woohoo! Looking forward to meeting everyone and for the year ahead! Side note: Does anyone from the 2014-2015 cohort have a list of texts used for the three summer courses that they might be willing to share?
  4. For anyone admitted/accepting the HBSW at Orillia - can you PM me your facebook name(s)? I'll set up a closed group on facebook for the class but require another member to start it up! Then hopefully we can start to get our heads around this program and the move ahead of us!
  5. I know this post was a few pages ago, but I just wanted to put in my two cents. I think if you know that social work is the profession you're committed to pursuing, it's absolutely worth it to continue improving your credentials and try again next year. Rejection the first time around can give you some time and space to consider what it is you want and how much you're willing to put in to get there. Last year was my first year applying to Lakehead (I have a 3-year BA in social sciences, so this was the only program that made sense for me) and I was conversing with some one who applied three times to Lakehead before being admitted. I don't think that makes her any less suited to the profession than some one who got in on their first try, although putting your life on hold for another year is daunting. Personally, this was my second year applying and I got in without any issues this time around. I can't speak to the weight that applying twice to a program holds, but if you look at the next year as an opportunity to explore the field and improve your candidacy, it would definitely improve your chances! After being waitlisted last year, I moved up to Thunder Bay to invest in the community a little and started volunteering with Children's Aid Society and the shelters here. Not counting the resume building that I did, the networking alone probably would have been enough. Everyone knows everyone here, and after meeting with the social work admissions ladies, I couldn't go far without bumping into them. I'm not saying that moving to Thunder Bay is the solution, but if you want to get into the program, you probably will - and your determination and commitment to the profession will shine through on your future applications. Plus, understanding the application process and what they're looking for/the questions they're asking will probably give you a huge leg up, too! If you get in touch with admissions and inquire where your weaknesses were on your application(s), I'm positive they would be happy to give you some constructive feedback. On a completely separate note - does anyone know if there has been a facebook group created for the HBSW Orillia campus yet? I'm a little worried about finding accomodation!
  6. Congratulations, Magfish! It's true that Thunder Bay truly is pretty isolated, however there are countless opportunities for social work up here! I moved to Thunder Bay last summer and although the winter was longer and colder than I'm used to (being a "southerner" and all), I found the community itself wonderful and because so many social work programs are based out of here that service the entire Northwest, there are endless possibilities for networking, volunteering, etc. It's a welcoming and warm community and I found it easy to carve out a place for myself here in very little time! I'm sure the program will keep us all busy enough that the location won't matter so much, anyways! Whatever route you decide on, good luck and congratulations once again to yourself and everyone else for this accomplishment!
  7. Hello everyone! I haven't posted on this thread since last year, but have been following itclosely again as I completed my applications to Lakehead and Dalhousie. This was my second time applying -- I was placed on a waitlist last year and in the end was not admitted. I just wanted to share with everyone that Lakehead has updated the application status in the "myinfo" portal! I applied for both the Orillia and Thunder Bay campus and was admitted to Orillia this afternoon (My heart is still pounding)! Good luck to everyone else pursuing this path, I understand the anxiety and turmoil that comes with the waiting game quite well!
  8. Still holding onto the smallest sliver of hope for entry this year into Thunder Bay's campus! I reached out to the social work admissions department and they were kind enough to give me a break down of my application scores - less than one percent off! I'm not sure I wanted to know that. I was told the Thunder Bay campus hasn't opened the waitlist at all yet! I'm trying to look at this extra year as a blessing in disguise - looking forward to getting more experience in the mean time and I know where my weaknesses were for my application next year. Best of luck to everyone beginning their masters/HBSW programs this year! You have certainly earned your spots!
  9. Good luck to everyone still on Lakehead's waitlist... Let's hope they keep good to their word and accept all of us tomorrow!
  10. Hey all, congratulations again to all those who have since been accepted! Just curious if anyone on the Lakehead waitlist knows when they might send out their second round of offers? I believe the letter said that around May 16th Sonya would email us to let us know how many, or if any spots had opened up - however she didn't seem to mention if the offers would come at this time as well? I'm just trying to make some solid plans for the near future and finding it rather difficult!
  11. Indeed, thank you KatRousi, for that inspiring post. I think we all know that you're correct, and that if this profession is what we're meant to do, than all the experiences along the way will simply enrich our skills and perspective as a social worker. Not to stray too far from topic, but I'm curious how you got involved with the Cree community - that sounds like a wonderful opportunity. If you have a spare moment, do you mind sending me a private message regarding how you acquired the position (previous volunteer work, connections, etc.?) Congratulations on your acceptance at Lakehead, you earned it.
  12. First of all, congratulations to everyone who has been accepted thus far! Seems like there have been quite a few people put on the waitlist for Lakehead - I too have been waitlisted for the Thunder Bay campus, and refused acceptance at Orillia. Wish I had been placed on the Orillia waitlist since the candidate pool is twice the size, but alas, here we are! I'll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed alongside the rest of you hopefuls. Good luck everyone with the rest of your admissions and please keep us updated!
  13. I received the email confirming the details of the Lakehead HBSW online personal statement exam today. They do mention that results will be posted in mid-April - which seems like an eternity! In the instructions for the exam, they state that the length for 4/5 questions should be 2-3 pages? Does anyone know if we're talking word document sized pages? The idea of that makes me nauseous.
  14. Good evening everyone. I have been lurking this thread for a few days now and thought I would take the opportunity to ask a couple questions that seem to float around my head at the most opportune moments of the day (as soon as I close my eyes and try to fall asleep). I've noticed there are a few posters currently enrolled in the Lakehead one year HBSW program. I've applied to both the Thunderbay and Orillia campus this year and it will be my first time writing a personal statement exam (and to my horror it will also be timed). I was hoping a few of you could shed some light on your experience with the application process last year. I would also love to hear feedback from those of you applying for your MSW - what has your experience been writing your statement of purpose? Also if anyone has any useful links that they've used to craft their SOP, either external or within this forum, I would greatly appreciate it if you passed them along! I'll continue to navigate through these forums in the mean time. I was feeling quite confident about my application until I accidentally stumbled upon this site and began reading about the volunteer work some of you have under your belts. I'm applying with a BA from UofG and was on the dean's honour list for the majority of my time there (My last 10 credits are mostly 90's with a couple exceptions). My background is in International Development and I've spent the last year, first as a volunteer, and shortly thereafter as part-time program staff with a youth center for at-risk teens. I've also taken two online seminars with CTRI to try and boost my chances a little. Can anyone comment on what they think my chances may be? Thanks so much in advance and good luck to those of you who applied this year!
