  1. Yes, now I can join this group!!! If anybody is in Silicon Valley or in the LA area since I'll be living near there. Claremont, California would be the best!!! Just shoot me a message.
  2. You guys probably wouldn't believe this, but I actually got accepted to KGI today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a professional science degree, but this program leads to a PhD in Applied Science if I choose to continue. I can feel my fire burning again. I guess I'll be taking the science & business route since they picked me first I am happy with my red battle scars now.
  3. In my CV my laboratory experience is my research experience since I normally pick professors or classes that actually require short-term research projects. An example would be is that my plant physiology class required me to design my own original experiment and that would meet my lab requirement. The benefit is that I can show up anytime to complete my greenhouse research, but downside is that growing plants take time. The same could be said about my advance genetic class that required me to annotate original gene data and have it pass the computer test. If it doesn't pass the dot-plots and other computer technical stuff then I fail.
  4. The application pool this year must be extremely high, and I can speak for the first years. My 1st actually stated for my broader impacts that it wasn't competitive enough for this current application pool. I was acknowledged for tutoring STEM fields, volunteering STEM programs and promoting them, and using my biodegrade project to provide free service to the community along with getting research done. Plus, outlining a plan to get undergraduates involved into bioinformatics, but that still wasn't enough. The other reviewer knocked me for not specifically tutoring elementary students. Honestly, from what I learn in this experience is that if I stay in my current field I'll be even more competitive in the next application pool since 2/3 reviewers believe I don't have adequate background in genomics to brag about that. Seems like my diverse research background is a double-edge sword in that regard.
  5. I think the statement is strait forward. Basically, even though you might get interesting results no change will be done by the higher-ups. I'm kind of curious how you wrote your personal statement to get that kind of response --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As for me I got NOT RECOMMENDED: G/G IM Basically, my proposal is sophisticated compared to my background, and I probably didn't fully comprehend my approach. They did note my presentations and scholarship winnings in the past. BI Not competitive compared to current application pool Summary: I have potential. F/G IM Again, my background is mixed. This reviewer notes I did research in micro-degradation, marine ecology, and just started genomics which is the bases of my research. This reviewer also mention that I have a huge mix since I also do have a nursing background. My current research project will give interesting results. BI Notes all my community work involving undergrads and helping children and the community. Summary: Basically, I just started in this field and with more experience as a graduate student I will be very competitive and have potential to be a great applicant. VG/G IM Should provided greater detail in proposal. BI Did not do outreach with elementary students Summary: Should do outreach with elementary students. Reviewer 1: I can't believe this person thinks my approach is too complicated or advance with my background. I wish this reviewer now can see me typing up my current manuscript based on the theory with what I proposed. I'll be presenting this in San Diego for those who heard of this great conference. Reviewer 2: Not much I can say about this since this person does seem a bit interested in my history, but only views me a starter. Reviewer 3: I wish this person can talk to Reviewer 2 since I did outreach to elementary students and 4 year olds.
  6. Well if I do end up getting honorable mention I'll use XSEDE memberships to the max.
  7. This is an awesome game. I'll have show this to my younger math brother.
  8. I am planning to use this NSF for my leverage to force my way to a decent grad program, since I still haven't heard from a few. If I get honorable mention I'll know my efforts paid off and celebrate with drinks and have something to brag about, and I can use this for another opportunity. If I don't get it I'll just continue on my day and say my "congrats" to people who receive this honor.
  9. I would say TAing is worth it if you get to teach in front of the class and don't have to worry about grading to many papers. Now if you are TAing 20 hours a week grading papers and doing all the professors useless chores then you are getting ripped off. I'm not sure to classify my case for the NSF-GRFP a need or want, but this can potentially give me leverage into attending a graduate school this year.
  10. Changing proposed institution isn't a big deal (unless you change programs from biology to a professional biotechnology degree), but changing from biology to psychology might be a huge issue. I idea of this fellowship is for you to get use to grant or proposition writing. You do not even have to stick with your proposed topic.
  11. I can't take this waiting game anymore. Why can't they just put me out of my misery and say if my application made it at least the first rounds or not. I would cheer if updates come in Friday!
  12. I'm not sure if this helps, but my friend got an acceptance to UNC two weeks ago. He is more of a development/immunology type of major.
  13. This could explain why I got rejected in this subfield this year . Interesting, I am currently working in a Genomics Project at Washington University so we probably cross each others paths before.
  14. If either of us won grants or even hit the no prize honorable section then I'll would celebrate with drinks. Just a few more weeks and we will know the results I could say that this can be a miracle life saver. I guess I have a terrible gambling streak then. Honestly, I use to tell myself why couldn't they have choose me, but I also came into a realization that they cannot support all superstars. It maybe a failing system, but I hope this years group does well. Somehow this application process taught me a great deal of things.
  15. Hurrray!!! Success is sure to come and it seems like your graduate cycle will pay off.
  16. In just a couple of weeks our fates will be decided. Why can't they finish earlier when it was submitted earlier and they have less pages to read.
  17. Thanks for the encouragement. I still have a few hopes left. This is a very long shot, and I'm probably deluding myself to false hope of somebody with so many rejections, but a small possibility of winning the NSF-GRFP can be a huge turn around. If I work hard in my current research project and finish a manuscript, before July I might be able to apply abroad to a decent PhD Program. I just found a Master Program at CA that might help me lean towards the light a bit more. If the above 3 plans fail I can always vacation and work for the semester or year.
  18. I don't even know what to say. I just got my third rejection today, but this time from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Biological Science Program. I think the time changing event cause this curse to happen.
  19. Congrats Thesbane!!! Is this where you plan to attend grad school?
  20. I just got my rejection from both Einstein and Stony Brooks Genetic Department through email. When I was reading my Stony Brooks email I was jumping in excitement when I saw this sentence "We are inspired by the talent, diversity and motivation of the next generation of research scientists such as yourself." But when I read the second paragraph I got this "...we regret that yours has not been selected for an offer of admission." I guess I'll extremely focus on my research project and think of a contingency plans again along with sipping hot tea day and night.
  21. One of my research partners presented research in a national conference (not me), so I am wondering if it would be okay to cite in the published abstract section of my CV since I am listed as a co-author in the abstract books?
  22. Wow, Monochrome Spring you actually remembered the name. I feel honored.
  23. Hi Pretty_Penny, I remember being in a similar situation as an undergraduate, which caused me to change majors into biological science. The difference was that I didn't have a counselor because I was so depress that I wasn't thinking and nobody really knew what to do with me. No program is worth mental destruction. Once this whole ordeal with you changing advisors happen you will feel a great relief and a brighter light. It can be hard to see that right now, but things will improve. I had to admit it was hard cutting my losses changing majors and I always had that fear walking pass my ex-major department and the classrooms, but things improve overtime. I never regretted leaving a program that could have caused me mental instability even though I could have gotten the degree.
  24. I officially got my rejection today too for GSBS:(
  25. I guess two professors offered him positions in lab. I'll be figuring out the details later today, but I'm happy for him. WashU would have been an ideal school for me, so I think he is a bit hesitant to tell me since I didn't get an interview over there. If you are absolutely sure that you will not attend there program then it might be best to cancel it is tough being cognitive coherent while being exhausted and not have the will to go. However, you might be missing a good opportunity to scope out the school and to see if there are very interesting programs you have not heard of yet.
