2014 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
knightrunner replied to Monochrome Spring's topic in Biology
I can't take the wait any longer, so I started my backup plans. I applied to a summer internship to Europe. I am wagering I'll hear back from them sooner than some of these graduate schools. I am still hoping for UCLA ACCESS Genetics and Genomics to come through. -

Wow, BostonBio your stats are off the charts. I use to thought my summer international experience, post-bac, some knowledge in computational biology, and being a first-generation, multi-ethnic background, liberal art school would give me the edge, but I was clearly wrong. -

You might want to give them a call, but I called UC Davis for the Genetic & Genomic program and they said that there is a small chance of a 2nd interview. Now my only hope is UCSD, UCLA ACESS, Northwestern, Purdue, Einstein, Stony Brook, and Iowa. Unfortunately, it seems like they are giving the silent treatment. I would like to think biochem and genetics are very similar in topics, especially since I have a friend that will be applying to biochem schools too. -

I'm almost feel like gutting myself. Each day I wait and each rejection I possibly will receive will leave me into despair. -

I got my rejection letter today from Stanford. I am in the midwest, and applied to the genetics track. For everybody that receive there rejection letter from Stanford does it say "we have received a record-breaking number of excellent applications. The faculty admissions committees have had to make many difficult decisions..." -

I kind of glad I didn't even try, but then again applying for Stanford and Berkeley were dream crushers, especially when I didn't hear from Stanford yet. I applied to the biological science program, but now I am getting worried. I'll wait towards early February before I call the department. -

It has to be Washington. My friend text me that he got his official rejection today too. I don't know what superstars that school is looking for since his stats were decent. -

Potentially, I can get one for UCLA or Brown University. For UCLA, it is a 5-year funding contingent if I get into a grad program and if the government doesn't weed out funding. For Brown, it would be a year or two funding program and again only after I get accepted will I be a decent candidate. I am a little frustrated with UCLA because I thought high chance of funding myself means I would get an interview shot, but I guess I was over my head. Can you share any details like when is the Brown University interviews? I applied Dec 1st, so I am a little disappointed I didn't hear from them yet, but I got an email back from them on the 14th saying they have many applications this year and still reviewing them. I am tempted to call them again. -

I did a summer internship in there. Costa Rica is a fabulous place, very eco-friendly, and beautiful blue waters because of the sulfur of the volcanoes. They get most of their electricity from rainfalls alone too. I love traveling to new adventures even though I am a molecular genetics/computational biology type of researcher. I am wondering, but did anybody heard form Brown's MCB? -
Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
knightrunner replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
My brother is planning to get an MFA after finishing his bachelors in theater arts. I can never understand why he wants his master without working theater internships first to get some experience, gain better practice, and to earn some money on the side. My worry is that he will rack up so much debt without having a plan what to do with his MFA. lol something my uncles would say to me, but then again they could be potentially jealous since I am in the same field as them. My grandma would say well my cousin wasn't able to find a job so he needs more schooling (cousin=started masters in international studies). Your uncles were able to get a job with their bachelor degrees in science so why don't you do that? Me: There are just some occupations you cannot get without a PhD, and I have bigger goals than that (My mind: I want to become a dean and have the credibility to do lead my own experiments) Another line (this was told to my mom when I wasn't around): Uncle (biotech): Did you know that the biology field doesn't make a lot of money? Mom: I'm sure my son will figure out something like he normally does. He will make more than you. My most favorite line: Why don't you become a Doctor (medical). Sometimes I regret telling people I am applying to grad school because I get this everyday too. It gets annoying when I don't have any interviews to share yet, especially when my friends in the same field are currently interviewing right now. -
How Are You Coping With The Torture Of Waiting???
knightrunner replied to PsycD's topic in Waiting it Out
I'm not coping to well. I use to believe THESE GRAD SCHOOLS DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE MISSING last week. Now, I'm getting worried, and I hit burnout especially since my friends heard some news and attending interviews right now. I feel like this is a grad school conspiracy, and all I can do is wait things out. OH WHY CAN'T ONE GRAD SCHOOL GIVE ME NEWS OF AN INTERVIEW FOR I CAN MOVE FORWARD. For now I am just looking for summer internship to apply abroad and learning some computer programming tricks. I guess I'll start eating subway by myself an ponder the results Monday. -

Etern thanks for sharing your interview and your perspective. I think it really depends on which faculty member you are talking too. When I was talking to a faculty member they are wondering how can I balance my ambitions with doing research. If I was planning to be in a R1 institution they expect publications in high quality journals if not in a R1 then I don't have to worry about # of publications, citations, etc. When I explain to him how the system works I actually got praised. On the other hand it might be a good idea to stay with the hardworking and perseverance speech, unless you know the professor wouldn't want to hear that. Edit: to Etern -

I'm still thinking in how to approach this, but I got interviews for possible funding for UCLA and a funding program from Brown only if I get accepted to a graduate program. I figured if potential PI know my status maybe I will get an interview shot, otherwise the money will go to waste. I just can't depend on admissions if they can put 2+2 together. I find it funny in how could I get interviews for this, but not an actual graduate interview yet. -

Let's Take a Poll - Most and Least Responsive Programs
knightrunner replied to aba1984's topic in Biology
Best: Washington University in St. Louis- they even respond during the Sunday night that applications are due; University of Iowa- quick responses and usually answer questions Worst: Biology@Princeton- No word from them or email Stanford Genetic Department- No emails, and never answer phone calls -
I could imagine every department giving evil stares at this question even though it is a totally legitimate innocent question. Not ever program will let you master out. Some websites will tell you there department policy, but you might want to do a little bit of reading on which ever school you plan to be in.
