  1. I would definitely call. There are lots of apartments by the 35 so they shouldn't have ran out. But most leases aren't up until July 31st so are you won't be able to move in until sometime in mid August. There is also apartments by the 9 bus stop but the visitors parking back there is terrible. If you don't mind sacrificing that then you can request that too (the 9 bus comes faster than the 35 because it has a shorter route).
  2. Hello ligong! I went to UF for my undergrad and I lived in Campus Lodge (a 4/4) for 3 years and I loved it. The rent was cheap and I had random roommates each year and I was fine. If I had to do it over, however, I would spend the extra money and get a 2/2 instead of a 4/4 as a grad student. I liked the apartment complex. Fully furnished with everything included, the maintenance staff was great, and each apartment has huge flat screen TVs. I would suggest staying in the apartments towards the front of the complex near the bus stop for the 35. It is relatively quiet there, great for visitor parking, and close to the bus stop that takes you directly to UF. I had a car but I never really drove it since the Gainesville transportation was good. Campus Lodge is also down the street from a grocery store (Publix) and lots of food places. And it is only about 3 to 5 minutes away from Archer Road which has Walmart, Target, Trader Joe's and most of the restaurants, electronic stores, and clothing stores that are located in Gainesville. It is not close to midtown where all the bars are though so if you are looking for that type of scene then Campus Lodge is not the place. Overall though, Campus Lodge, in my opinion, isn't that expensive and the apartments are pretty nice for students. I wish they had a complex where I am going for school!
  3. Thank you so much! This really helps my housing decisions and I have to say I was conflicted about where to live my first year but I will definitely take your advice!
  4. I would personally take the year off. You'll never know what types of loans you may need in the future when your back is up against the wall (hopefully this won't happen but realistically it may). I know many students who looked to their local community colleges to find a teaching job or something similar for their gap year. I would really encourage this as you can really add these things to your CV while doing something you (hopefully) love! I would strongly suggest calling or visiting places even if they don't advertise for jobs. Sometimes its all about luck and right timing. I found a job at a bookstore because I visited so much and joked that I should work there and the manager hired me (after a whole process but it happened)! Good luck!
  5. My biggest suggestion that I tell everyone (based off my previous experience with a similar summer research program) is to already have a list of universities and programs (and people within those programs) that you want to apply to. This way, you can narrow it down as you learn throughout the summer and also get some insight into potential advisors, whether through talking to grad students or other professors in the program. My program was research and GRE heavy and I should have did more grunt work for application season as I was a little stressed when it came to picking schools and writing my personal statements to tailor it to those schools during Fall semester of my senior year. Good luck!! SN: I met some of my very best friends in my summer program because of our similar career goals and they helped my get through the application cycle. This is the beginning of a support network you will have in doctoral studies and it is going to be an amazing experience!
  6. Thank you for your insight! I guess I'm a learn from experience type of girl so I'll definitely take into account the crime rates in certain areas and neighborhoods. I still would like to check it out for myself because I met some Duke grads a few years ago and they loved Durham (I didn't get their contact info then or I would ask them for housing). I just wanted to know where the UNC grad community was fairly located in Durham.
  7. I thought it was beautiful but I have lived close to my undergrad college and I prefer the outskirts especially during the peaks of football and basketball season. I also wanted to be closer to a bigger city (though I know that Durham is not a huge city). Granted, I may move to NC and realize that Chapel Hill is better suited for me as one summer does not do it justice but I just wanted to keep my options open for my first year and explore more of the area. Chapel Hill is very similar to my college town now and I just want something new.
  8. Do you have any apartment recommendations? I park and ride/have about a 30 or 40 minute bus ride to school now so commuting isn't a concern for me. Are there any apartments or a certain part of Durham that I should be looking in? I'm hoping to go apartment shopping next month and wanted to have a starting point.
  9. Does anyone who attends UNC live in Durham or have housing advice for moving to Durham and commuting? I know that some people live in Durham close to Chapel Hill. I lived in Chapel Hill for the summer and I was not particularly found of Carrboro or Chapel Hill and wanted some info on Durham. Thanks for any help!
  10. Accepted my offer for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill! It feels so good to be done with this whole application process! Grad cafe has drove me crazy and kept me sane all at the same time!
  11. *rejection not reflection lol
  12. I got my reflection letter for the Predoc around 4:30 today. I'm not disappointed just ready to try again next round. Many people don't apply to PhD programs, let alone get accepted, nor have the opportunity to apply for Ford Fellowships. So this is not a set back but a set up for something greater! Congrats to everyone! A scholar from my university was awarded and I'm very proud!
  13. I wish they had a definitive date for notification either way. I applied for the Pre-doc and it would nice to join the ranks of scholars who are Ford Fellows. I have adequate funding from my potential programs but this money would be nice also!
  14. I received an official email from the Graduate Coordinator and we have communicated through email ever since. I have not checked my mail in little while, but I am sure I did not receive a letter through my mailbox as of now. So I would advice you to be on the lookout for an email. Also, my ASF information did not change once I was admitted.
  15. Oh no problem at all gingin! We all know how it feels to see that first acceptance pop up and we want to know EVERYTHING. I was just like that with these Duke acceptances. I'll keep you updated if I get anymore information!
  16. No they didn't update my ASF page. I'm not sure how that works but it just says that my application was complete like it did when I first applied.
  17. Yes it was a generic email from the DGS. No info on funding yet so they may be waiting for more info to send out more emails. But I am widely guessing.
  18. Thank you! I haven't saw anymore so they may be doing them in waves. I'm confident that you will be getting yours soon gingin!
  19. I just received an acceptance from UMD! They are sending out generic letters. Visit day is March 11th.
  20. It's good to know I'm not alone! I check the Duke site religiously and my heart drops and soars at the "No notifications" message. If I don't hear by Friday then I may just call and but myself out of this misery.
  21. Has anyone else still not gotten word from Duke University? I'm really anxious to know my application status but too much of a coward to call and find out. The paradox of the application process.
  22. For anyone who applied to the University of Maryland, I rechecked the website to see about application status and they will be sent out by mail, not email or phone. I'm not sure when but this is just a reminder to check your mailboxes also in this age of technology!
  23. I haven't heard from Duke either. I've already prepared myself to receive a rejection on Friday.
  24. Mormlib, I would definitely talk to the professor who called you to let you know about the acceptance and they can work anything out. You'll love Ohio State! It's a beautiful campus, and I bet even more so in the winter! And congrats again to everyone who received acceptances!!!
  25. For those who were accepted to UNC, are you doing the recruitment weekend on Feb. 28th - Mar. 1st? Have you already booked your flight or received a packet?
