Staying Healthy Through the Stress
Horb replied to despejado's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
What do you recommended for drinks? I obviously know water is great, but sometimes I want something flavorful. I love juices but they always tend to have a ton of sugar (which is probably what gives it that flavor). I do drink 1% milk too, so mainly that, water, and juice. I cancelled out soda, so I'm thinking if I restrict my diet to better food and reduce portion size I might be able to make my goal by june. -

I'm in need to not eating potatoes all the time, regardless of their form (mashed vs baked vs roasted). I'm going to start working out and try to just eat lots of veggies and a little bit of chicken. Any idea on how healthy sushi is? I LOVE IT, and my school offers it nightly, but idk if it is as healthy as I think it is. -
I asked for a deferral for the Fulbright should God shine upon me and I get it. UConn said yes. I haven't asked Tufts yet because I'm nervous.

I've prepared for a mid-april deadline, so if I hear back sooner, I will be in too much shock to open the email.

I'm in the same boat. I have two schools and need to make a decision soon. This is slightly stressful!

Is it bad that I'm looking at apartments in case I get the Fulbright?

I'll be Thursday! -
I wish I had thought to take my subject test gre sooner so I could retake it. I studied so hard for that then did horribly. With the GRE, I didn't study that much and did pretty well. Anyway, I got into a few schools, so if anyone wants advice, feel free to pm I think it is a bit early for a thread but if it makes people feel secure in this crazy process, then I'm all for it!

Fall 2014 applicants??

Just wait. They won't take away your acceptance. You can start looking at apartments and planning without committing. BUT, if you'd take them over your wait list, then I'd say just accept But wait from the last school, for closure. -
I hope they don't do that for the UK...

Staying Healthy Through the Stress

Hi all! I'm jumpin' in on this. I totally gained weight during app season and am now pushing myself to drop some lbs (or just until I'm happy with mah weight/body). Any ideas on eating on a budget? I love most fruits and veggies, but I find them to be super expensive (and you know...college). Any thoughts? -
CONGRATS! TO EVERYONE!!!!! This is so exciting!

How's funding work?
-
Depends on the country. If they X number of research grants and Y number of study ones, I'd say 0% chance, primarily because it wouldn't be fair to the students who applied directly for study. They make it pretty clear at the start that you have to know what you're doing when you apply. I'd wait until you get it though to ask the commission.

Looking for Insight on Wait Lists
Horb replied to back2black's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I have a question that relates to the unfaithful nature: Both of my programs verbally confirmed 5.5/6 years of funding. In the letters, neither of them confirmed this. Should I be concerned? Their both reputable so I feel like I shouldn't be worried... -
Fall 2014 applicants??

I'm a little worried about job placement too. But I figure if I publish a lot, get conference presentations, and score some prestigious scholarships (you know, NO BIG DEAL), I don't have to be worried. Plus Tufts has a pretty good name recognition rate. -
You will have to pay for your apartment yourself for the first month or two until you get the first aid disbursement. My friend had to wait until November! That includes security deposit too.

Looking for Insight on Wait Lists
Horb replied to back2black's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I've always heard that if you accept but then want to decline for another program (Say you got into UMass Amherst but then got into Harvard off a waitlist) that unless you are prepared to burn all bridges with that other program, do not do it. That being said, if you get into Harvard, it would very much be worth it to go there. I think on some level, DGS understand that we have to do what is best for ourselves. -

Hey all! I thought I'd ask to see if anyone was moved off the waitlist or is going to the visiting week. -
Yeah. I did a semester abroad and got to the B1/B2 level but my home uni had nothing higher so I haven't been able to take classes. I also had some issues with my German Uni, but I'd still love to go back!

I feel like they shouldn't cut back the grants after people applied, but I guess they probably have little control over it.
-
Hi! I am looking at applying for this grant for next summer. Do you have any advice for the application? I'm planning on doing the intensive so that I can better read German so that I can read George Eliot's writings in German (I'm a Victorianist).
-
With most places you have to get your own accommodation. My uni has an apartment network, but it is still all me. For the DAAD applicants, I'm looking at doing a summer grant some time next summer (or even the summer after). I majored in English and German but my grad program is an English PhD. I'm worried I won't pass the language exam though because I'll be so out of practice by then. Any helpful tips with either the application or not becoming rusty?
