  1. I'm out of likes as well. But go Khannnn! Also, baller username!
  2. OMG so true! I realized I made a slight error in regards to a paper my POI asked to see, and I agonized over whether or not to email him for so long last night. I even asked both of my academic advisors for their thoughts on whether or not I should email him.
  3. I really hope so! It's been snowing here the past two days. I would be very happy to move to San Diego at the end of the semester. And, you know, obviously I want to study there and become a famous and fabulously wealthy archaeologist (haha). But right now I am liking the idea of sunny California more and more!
  4. You would be very popular among experimental archaeologists. I went to an experimental archaeology conference last semester, and it was all a bunch of grizzled old mountain men. Also, the overlap between experimental archaeologists and doomsday preppers is pretty fantastic. You know, this is shaping up to be a pretty good research proposal...
  5. Good idea!
  6. I decided that if I get rejected from UCSD, I'm going to send my POI a polite email saying "If it's alright to ask, why was I rejected? Would it be worth it for me to apply again next year? This program was my top choice, and I am willing to do whatever is needed to get in." I definitely know what you mean about feeling like you are stuck and can't move forward. My fiance has his BS in mechanical engineering, but the job market has been so stagnant that he hasn't found anything and instead is working in food service. I wish I knew more about the process of settling in a new country. I am assuming that you are not living in the US, since you mentioned applying to US schools. I do know a guy who came to the US from France. He got a job here and was granted a work visa. You might also have success applying to an undergraduate program in the US, I know that a lot of the undergrad programs here give special considerations to international students. Of course this would be a huge pain since it would be back tracking, but it might be worth it in the long run. Other than that I can't think of anything. I wish I could help you more!
  7. She really is though! I don't think I could get through this without her helpful advice.
  8. I'm having a million paranoid thoughts now about why I haven't heard back from my POI since the interview. I'm worrying because my POI asked to see a paper that I presented at a conference. So I sent it, forgetting that between submitting the abstract and actually writing the paper, I had totally changed the paper title. So if you look at the conference abstracts, the paper I have listed there appears to be a different paper than the one I sent my POI. I hope he doesn't think I'm lying or something. I totally forgot about it and I didn't say anything about it to him...
  9. Hnnnngggggg!!!! I really want them to call meeee! The other UCSD applicants on here have gotten their answers. I interviewed on Monday, and now I'm starting to be worried that I won't be accepted, since the other UCSD interviewees on here have already heard back.
  10. Wow really? Was it because they just don't have the funding, or what?
  11. I know what you should do with yourself: Go out and celebrate! You've earned it!!! Congratulations!
  12. Try and keep your spirits up! On Monday I was feeling awful after receiving my second rejection (and to a school I thought I had a really good shot at!), but then I got an interview with another school almost immediately after. There is still hope! And judging by the interview I'd had, they are most concerned about your research interests lining up with what their department is doing. You never know, one of the places you applied to might think you're a good fit!!!
  13. Sorry to hear that! I didn't see this post before I replied to your first one. Good luck with UCR!
  14. I had an interview via phone on Monday, and they asked to see a paper that I presented at a conference in 2013. I'm nervous though, the paper wasn't very great and I hope they don't judge all my work on that. I just sent a rough draft of my thesis, so hopefully that will help. How about you? What area of arch are you interested in?
  15. Where did you and daykid get in? Congrats!
  16. Sorry to hear that birinciben. How many more are you waiting on?
  17. I'm sure you are right sarab. I'll try and calm myself and be patient, lol.
  18. Now I am starting to feel less hopeful since they didn't flat-out offer to fly me out.
  19. He never said that to me! Just that if I want to come visit, I should ask. I replied that I would love to, but I would need to check with my professors about missing class, although I am sure they won't mind. He also mentioned introducing me to current grad students. I said that I had wanted to reach out to them but was not sure about how to go about it, and he said that they're on break anyway because they have some weird quarter system instead of the traditional two-semester system. Did you get specifically invited? Did they immediately say "Come visit we'll pay?" I think when/if my POI replies to my thank you I'm going to say that if possible I want to come visit and ask what I need to do to make that happen.
  20. Oh man, you all are making me really really want this even more! Also, the UCSD website has pics of people surfing. I want to be a cool grad student who goes surfing! Pick me, pick me!
  21. I want to! But I am worried about spending even more money on this process and then not getting in. Also I absolutely cannot take time away from my studies. I'm already using up some of my class skips to present at a conference in April. :-/
  22. I hope my POI doesn't read gradcafe lol. It might not be great if he saw that his school is my last chance. Although it is definitely my top choice, so there's no need for UCSD to think I only see them as a last resort.
  23. Nowhere. UCSD is my last chance...
  24. Haha. My parents are kind of old school and have beat it into my brain to write thank you's for this type of thing. Who knows? Maybe someone else he interviewed didn't send one, and maybe he's really a stickler for politeness, and will say "Oh well Dana sent me a nice thank you note, she's definitely earning brownie points for that! Not like that other interviewee!" At least that's how it plays out in my crazy, nervous, desperate imaginings. In reality he'll probably be like "oh, okay." He mentioned in the interview that if I wanted to come visit I should ask. I should have said something in my thank you email but I forgot. Oh well, I would need to get my professors to excuse me from class anyway, and I won't be able to ask them until later.
