  1. I'm heading to Ann Arbor as well! Looking forward to it. Would love to hear where people are looking in terms of housing - more expensive than I had anticipated given the midwestern location.
  2. I agree that it's important to get a feel for the place and people and I'm a bit nervous to rush into a decision, but I'm confident in the fit with Michigan and given my partner's industry, he needs to get on the job market sooner rather than later. Kaledoscopish, I'm not attending IU's recruitment program - Bloomington isn't really a place I could see myself living for the next 4 years and I'm not as excited about the program's split-campus community (between Indianapolis and Bloomington campus), nor the larger cohort size comprised of a larger mix of part-time folks. But, I hope the visit goes well for you! You mentioned you are planing to visit Michigan early. I'd love to hear your impressions!
  3. I understand the reservation about a lack of standard public policy work, but I think that's where the cognate courses come into play, which allow you to tailor your curriculum to your interests. Kaleidoscopish points out major selling points for me in terms of the curriculum and the comps at Michigan. I like the flexibility of the coursework and the semester-long comp structure. I wish I knew more about the assistantship/advisor structure. The faculty member I interviewed with explained that it's a system that seems to be working for students in the program. At the beginning of the program, it sounds like you are assigned both a work supervisor for your assistantship and an academic advisor. This "spilt-structure" of advising is something that students in the program seem to like. But, how are these assignments made? I'd love to know more about this. In talking with current students in the program, it does sound like you can change assistantships to fit your needs throughout the program. Does anyone know more about this? Funding for 5 yrs would be great, but I know very few programs that guarantee that. It seems like there are grants available for those who are going into a 5th year. I'm hoping to be done in 4 so I don't have to worry about that! Anyone else committing to Michigan before the Preview?
  4. For all those planning to attend the Preview Day on the 21st for Higher Ed PhD- The visit date seems later in the season than many other programs. With a partner to consider, I have to make a decision prior to the visit date so a job search can ensue. Michigan is at the top of my list and unless the Preview Day is downright miserable (which I'm sure it won't be), I think I'm ready to pull the trigger and commit. Has anyone else already decided that they are enrolling in the fall? Am I jumping the gun in doing so prior to the Preview Day? I'm lookig forward to meeting my future classmates!
  5. I'm still waiting... not expecting a positive result, as I did not get an interview either.
  6. I've heard back from the PhD Higher Ed concentration at the Lynch School.
  7. I spoke with two current SHIPS students during the application process and neither mentioned interviews. They both confirmed that they received an informal admit email early in February from their POI before getting their official acceptance letter abd they did not do an interview. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed (but not holding by breath)!
  8. I was told the committee was meeting today and I would likely hear within the week! Fingers crossed!
  9. Hi, I just received an informal admit email earlier this week from Maryland's Higher Ed PhD program. Good luck to you!
  10. Hi, I just had my skype interview with the Director of CSHPE today. It was really casual and he told me it was not evaulative. It only lasted about 30 min. and I was basically asked why I wanted to pursue my PhD now, what I want to do when I'm finished, and research interests. Good luck!
  11. Hi, I received an informal email from POI at Michigan for skype interview. It's scheduled for this week and I'm prepping now! Good luck to you!
  12. Hi. I applied to 7 Higher Ed/Ed Policy PhD programs and have heard from 2 so far. Word has it that Penn has sent out email invites for their PhD interview weekends (I didn't get one), and USC Rossier sent interview invites out earlier this month. I have received email invites from Michigan and Boston College this week... still keeping my fingers crossed on the others. Good luck to all! Also, has anyone done phone/skype interviews yet? I'm wondering what to expect.
  13. I, too, would love to hear from PhD applicants in Higher Ed/Ed Policy. So far, I've received e-mail invitations from U. Michigan and Boston College Higher Ed PhD for skype interviews. Still waiting to hear from UPenn, Maryland, IU, USC and SHIPS. Are there any forums out there for these schools?
