  1. I did not see a thread for UConn and will be there this fall. Anyone else? What are you studying?
  2. I am planning to commute a little over an hour each way when I start in the fall. I doubt there will be much time for reading for personal enjoyment, so I am planning to finally put the audible.com account to good use.

    Providence, RI

This is a pretty quiet thread. I am actually going to UConn, but have been advised that Providence is the best city to live in within reasonable commuting distance. We are looking to live within about 15 minutes of the Amtrak station, so that my wife could work in Boston if she finds an opportunity. Ideally, we would like to live south of the station, east of 95. It looks like crime is higher in the north and in the west. Can anyone recommend places to live? It will be just the two of us, so we do not need anything too big, but we would like to be in a safe, walkable area. Something with plenty of cafes, restaurants, etc. Recommendations for things to do and places to go would be welcome, too!

    Storrs, CT

Hello, all! I have also accepted my PhD admittance to UConn for this fall. I interviewed there in February and asked around quite a bit as to the best place to live. Roughly half of the current students recommended Willimantic, but others seemed quite opposed to it as a result of the high crime rate. I was told to steer clear or New Haven and Hardford as well. West Hartford was recommended as liveable, but rather expensive and not walkable. I think the best advice I was given was to live in Providence, RI and just accept the ~70 minute commute each way. Downtown looks relatively safe and bustling, but rent can be up there as well. This cost could be somewhat alleviated by not needing a second car. My wife and I will be coming from Tokyo, where we have lived for the last six years. My guess is that it will be easier for her to find a job in Providence or Boston (just 45 minutes by train) than in Storrs. That said, Storrs does have a growing "downtown" area. It is just very limited at the moment. Can anyone support or contest what I have been told?
  5. I applied to UConn, had an interview, and was placed high on the waiting list. I suppose at this point it is a matter of just hoping enough people turn down offers this week.
  6. To those wait-listed at UWashington: Did you attend an in-person interview already?
  7. Why are your best chance schools the ones which are more difficult to enter?
  8. No update to the website or email?
  9. ENTJ. Not many of us extroverts here. Perhaps I should go the public figure route...
  10. It sounds to me like depression, which not exercising will exacerbate. Join a book club or go to a bookstore to discuss books. Meetup.com has weird people of all interests. Move abroad where the cost of living is low and there are entirely new experiences available. Doing nothing will only deepen the rut.
  11. The hammer came down on me as well. It appears that it hit quite a few. Odd that I teach at NYU... but cannot get accepted as a PhD student.
  12. Not sure about the most recent post, but I still have not received an official rejection.
  13. I suppose at this point that no interview for the PhD means a rejection?
  14. Brown and MIT both sending out their rejections of Valentines Day. Classy.
