  1. MAJOR typo in the copy of my SOP for Berkeley. Didn't realize it until 2 days later. FUCK.

  2. I actually was just talking about something similar with my roommate. Originally I wanted to go to a fancy pretentious film school, but decided to follow my boyfriend at the time, and ended up at a public school 3 hours from home. At first I was pissed, but now I am so very glad I am where I am. I have been able to find a place for myself, make friends with REAL people, and push the boundaries of a small school. I have almost outgrown it, but I am very glad for the education I have earned here, and the kind of artist I have become, due to the lack of "elite" resources, and the fact that I've had a job in the real world for a couple years. Now when I go to a "top-tier" school, I will know how to use it, and I will piss off all the students who were formed within the box of an ivy.
  3. If you read the prompt, it says to write about how you have had to overcome hardships based on discrimination/etc., how you have come to understand the difficulties others face, and how you are going to change it. As a middle class white American, I wrote about my momentary disability, my visits to third world countries, my volunteer work, and how my studies in cross-cultural art are going to help the less fortunate.
  4. I just recently (last week!) decided to apply to a number of film MFA programs. The ones I am applying to are interdisciplinary, with a big focus on theory (they all require a written thesis, as well as a lot of visual work). I am an experimental film/installation/conceptual artist, with the goal of one day attending a PhD program in Film Studies and becoming a professor. Anyone else out there doing something similar? Anyone applying to film MFAs with different goals?
  5. Yeah... That happened to me too. I totally screwed up on the analytical, and I almost ran out of time on the verbal. Somehow I did incredibly well on the math. It was luck, though, because I guessed for at least a third of the questions... Unfortunately I am applying to Humanities programs.
  6. I work at a small film/video transfer shop downtown. My job is literally playing with movies! I go in late at night, and transfer old 8mm and 16mm film to digital. It's basically the best job I could have right now. I set my own hours, have archival experience to put on CV, and play with film. I am going to miss it when I have to leave for grad school...
  7. I am applying to media studies programs as well, and have had the same concerns. I emailed the graduate advisers at a couple schools, and after exchanging a few emails, they directed me to specific professors. When I emailed the professors they said that they generally never respond to applicants, because they get far too many emails each year. Lucky for me, I had a specific question that she felt deserved answering. I got the impression that in general, emails from applicants are a little annoying. This was at one of the big schools, though, so maybe it would work better at some of the less popular programs.
  8. Thank you for the advice! It is good to hear from someone who has experience applying. Most people I talk to about it either have no idea how difficult it is, aren't entirely familiar with the programs I am applying to, or are too nice to say anything that might hurt my feelings. Unfortunately I honestly do not have the time or money to retake the GRE. I probably should, but if I don't have the chance to study for it, I run the risk of not improving my score, while at the same time putting a dent in my studying/research time for this quarter. I think a superb writing sample would help me more than a slightly better GRE score. As for "safety" schools, I will definitely look into some more. Syracuse doesn't really seem like a good fit, but DePaul looks pretty interesting. The more I think about it, I realize that if I really do want to pursue a PhD, getting an MA could help quite a bit. Originally I decided to apply to these schools kind of as a joke ("Haha, wouldn't it be AWESOME if I got a PhD?!"), but now the application process has taken over my life. I just need to remember to put things in perspective. Thank you again for the feedback, I greatly appreciate it. And good luck to you, too!
  9. Up until this point, I was a little worried about getting accepted, but not too concerned by it. I have one adviser who keeps pushing me to apply, and even though he doesn't say anything about my chances, he also hasn't said anything negative. I talked to another professor today, and she told me that I should retake the GRE and reevaluate my school choices--basically, I am aiming too high, and shouldn't even try. So I thought I would ask everyone here. What do you think my chances are? Graduating Spring 2010 Double major: Studio Art - Mixed Media and Art History Double minor: Film Studies and Japanese Small, public university so that won't help my chances at all. Cum. GPA: 3.63 Art GPA: 3.75 AHi GPA: 3.65 (4.00 in upper-division) Film Studies: 3.9 GRE: 610v 710q 4.0aw No published work. Art and films have been in a number of small exhibitions and film festivals. Coordinated a University sponsored film event. Film production and archiving experience. I am applying to (in order of priority): UC Berkeley - PhD Film Studies Northwestern - PhD Screen Cultures U of Chicago - PhD Cinema and Media Studies Brown - PhD Modern Culture and Media University of Rochester - PhD Visual and Cultural Studies NYU Steinhardt - MA Media, Culture and Communication NYU Tisch - MA Cinema Studies (maybe Amsterdam - MA Film Studies) What do you think my chances of getting into these schools are? One of my LoR's has connections to Chicago and Berkeley, will that help at all? Do I need to take the GRE again? Should I add some "safety" schools, or should I wait until next year, when I have a lot more research, better GPA, potential TA experience, possible publications, and have time to retake the GRE? Thanks everybody.
  10. A number of the schools I am applying to don't have an option to upload the writing sample online. Because I don't want to send the school more than one package, I am waiting until I finish writing to send my transcripts. I intend to submit the online applications as soon as I finish these damn Statements of Purpose.
  11. I am actually really nervous about this. I hadn't decided on applying to PhD programs until mid-August (yes, super late notice), and I don't really have an adequate writing sample. I am working on it right now, and will be finishing it the first week of December, after which I will overnight it to my first batch of schools. Berkeley's deadline is the 8th of December, and I can only hope that I finish everything in time. (I do have a backup writing sample in case everything falls apart, but it doesn't really display my strengths as well as this new one will.) I would love to be able to send in my applications mid-November, but it is just not an option. Hopefully it is not as detrimental to getting accepted as it was when I applied to undergrad.
  12. I feel the exact same thing! What is even worse, though, is when I attempt to say something intelligent in class and don't get the expected response. Sometimes I feel like I am mentally handicapped, and everyone is too nice to let me know... Like it is all a big joke. Unfortunately, writing my SoP is only making it worse. D:
