  1. Just curious what the standard training is to be a chaplain? Does one have to do an MDiv or will the MTS suffice (at HDS)?
  2. Will you read all of it?
  3. Awesome. Thank you.
  4. Hey, that helps a lot! Thank you! I will see if his email is available online... Edit: yep his email is online and he is exactly the type of person I was looking for. Thank you!!!
  5. Hi, I'm in theology not history but the topic I'm writing on involves some knowledge of the history of prisons. Does anyone here know of any historians that have specialized knowledge in this area? Especially a historian who knows about the history of prisons in the non-western world? Also, any such person at Harvard (which is where I will be studying the fall)? Thank you.
  6. Thanks for your replies. I guess I will wait a couple months but still keep an ear to the ground. Grad forum religion has been really boring recently. No activity. Let's shake it up in here.
  7. I figured I'd create a thread just for HDS folks. That way I don't flood the board with all my questions. First question: for those moving in late August/September (i.e. not doing summer intensive), when are you starting to look for apartments? I've been searching the interwebs but it looks like now may be too early ... Also, is Harvard Graduate Housing a good option? What are the chances of actually getting it? Slim?
  8. Thanks for the response! I guess that might raise some eyebrows to opt for SAT/UNS, right?
  9. Would it be harmful to take language classes as Pass/Fail if the intent is to apply for a PhD later? For those at HDS, can I take my Arabic classes as Pass/Fail ? I've taken language classes before and they are hard as heck to get an A in. Thanks.
  10. I need to get on the housing situation. You? And yeah I just got the admission packet today. Rather boring.
  11. So, I accepted the HDS offer online and paid the enrollment deposit. I received the following message: "Thank you for submitting your enrollment deposit. We are pleased to confirm that your place in the Harvard Divinity School (HDS) incoming class of Fall 2014 is now secured." I've also accepted the financial aid offer. Anything else needing to be done at this point in time? Just want to make sure I don't miss a step here before it even begins. Thanks!
  12. Anyone get an admission packet from HDS yet?
  13. And I'm assuming the Ox and Cambridge don't, right? Doesn't look like it based on my google search. univ of Birmingham seems completely DL as an option.
  14. Cool. Thanks.
  15. Does UP have an Islamic studies program or can you only get PhD in Christian subjects? UP = University of Pretoria
  16. Will this be possible? Is it possible to get a visa to the UK for part-time study? I thought I read somewhere that the visa is not offered for this (but I may be mistaken). Also, would you work in the US in this scenario or the UK? When you travel to UK once a year how long do you stay there?
  17. Too many? Sorry about that.
  18. Thank you for your responses! Very helpful.
  19. Thank you all for your responses. It certainly wasn't the answer I was hoping for, but I appreciate the honesty. I'll definitely have some difficult decisions to make. However, I do think I'll be able to work it out. Thanks!
  20. Thank you all for your responses. Much appreciated.
  21. Cool. Thanks for the responses. Glad I took the GRE already and got it over with.
  22. What's considered a great GRE (verbal) for PhD programs?
  23. Thanks for your awesome advice! By the way, I do think it's the height of Orientalism that I would have to study European languages for Islamic studies aside from Arabic instead of Persian, Urdu, etc.
  24. My day job will require me to work six days a month, of which about half will be on weekdays. So, I will likely have to miss three days of each month. (These days will be random each month.) So, what is the attendance policy at HDS? Will I be ok, you think? Thanks!
  25. I was wondering what UK PhDs in religion/theology are like? So, instead of class work you just do research under supervision of a professor? Or professors? Can someone in a UK PhD explain what a typical week is like? (I'm specifically thinking of Oxford.) And sorry for the deluge of threads. Thanks.
