  1. I created a similar thread for U.S. PhD programs. What about advice for masters students looking to get into a phd program in the UK, specifically Oxford or Cambridge? (I am in Islamic studies, btw.) What admission requirements should we keep in mind ? Thanks !
  2. I, along with several others here, will start a masters degree (MTS at HDS) in fall of this year. I am strongly considering a PhD (in Islamic studies). What should I do to optimize my chances of getting into a PhD program (in the U.S.)? Also, what about languages? Is knowing primary language enough (Classical Arabic in my case)? Advice with regard to what classes to make sure to take, how to arrange schedule, etc. ? Thanks!
  3. Cool. Makes sense. I think I have a big name fetish because I ended up picking up a cheaper, closer school during undergrad instead of MIT (engineering major at that time). Still regret it as I have learned that pedigree does matter even though I still went to an awesome school which I enjoyed thoroughly. Anyways, it seems that Emory will be better for you in religious studies so congrats!
  4. I have heard that it's written in stone and no point in even asking. This is from other students as well as from the horse's mouth at Theological Education Day at HDS. Unrelated question: on a scale of one to ten, how obnoxious is it to wear harvard apparel? I ask because I want to lol.
  5. Emory over Oxford? Is it because of US vs UK or funding or something else? I'm a dodo head (who hasn't started his masters yet) because I see the name Oxford and go WOW. (Also in my field, Islamic studies, I think Oxford is top notch.) Again, I realize I'm being a dodo head by just seeing the big name and nothing else...So just curious is all.
  6. Unlikely. I went to theological education day already and like perytion can't justify hotel/travel cost especially since I know I'm accepting the offer. On the other hand, I do need to find an apartment so that MAY cause me to go. Just gotta see what my work schedule will allow.
  7. Same here. I'm an older untraditional student.
  8. I'm going to redirect this thread... Those of us/you who have been accepted to their desired school, how do you feel? For me, now I just can't wait to start at HDS and keep imagining myself there. Pretty excited but strange period between now and then. Also, it's weird because I really don't have more than one or so people to truly celebrate with since nobody seems to understand what divinity/religion school is.
  9. Look at the dramatic difference between these two responses below. No class: (Even if this person were Albert Einstein, I would want to reject him/her, if I were on the AdCom.) Class: (Totally would accept this guy/girl!)
  10. Absolutely! See ya there!
  11. I only applied to HDS so yeah going to HDS. Area of focus is same as yours: Islamic studies. Where are you studying/applying?
  12. Looks like I don't have to worry about this any more.
  13. Can you explain what you mean by this?
  14. Haha I also blew through that email and went to see the decision letter instead! Do we think merit scholars were already notified or do you think it would be in the funding email ? (Hey, can't help but hope. )
  15. So so so happy and feel blessed. Got into Harvard MTS!!!
  16. Yikes! Right around the corner then.
  17. Congrats! Does GTU offer funding?
  18. My HDS application for MTS still says "submitted," not "under review." Is that normal? Also, is March 15th the big day?
  19. Haha me too. Saw the email and heart skipped a beat.
  20. Thank you for your responses. Guess I just have to wait like everyone else. Sigh.
  21. Does HDS have an appeals process for the MTS or MDiv? (There is a major update in my application that occurred AFTER I had already submitted my application.) Of course I ask this two weeks before the decisions are sent out since I am going crazy waiting... Thanks!
  22. Congrats to the UChicago admit! Still gotta wait for HDS. It's killin' me inside.
  23. Must. keep. waiting. patiently.
  24. You guys are so right. That sounds like a really good option for me. It's even better because my family has relocated to that area. Thank you for pointing this out. I definitely want to do a master's at HDS first. I'll check out their PhD's to see if that's an option.
