  1. You have my apologies if you have already done this, but you should first check the results from previous years to get a rough estimate of Number 1's notification timeline. Also, check out this year's Some of your fellow applicants may have already posted information about decisions for Number 1. If there is no information available from either of those sources (or from Number 1's website), a concise e-mail to Number 1 should be fine: "Dear [Graduate Coordinator], I am writing to inquire about my application to the doctoral program. When should I expect to receive a decision on my application? Thank you very much. Best, FeministLife" FWIW, one of the schools to which I have been admitted has also asked for a decision as soon as possible. I have a admitted students visit scheduled with another school at the end of March, which means I will not make a decision until April 1st at the earliest. I understand (and share) your desire to be courteous, but you would still be letting Number 2 know in advance if you were to let them know a month from now.
  2. UIUC Economics PhD: MSc GPA: 3.92 HaHaHaHaHa!! All of them are JorsummmmmZZZZZZJjjjj!!! Did he/she just cast a spell on the AdComm?
  3. Since your upward trend is fairly dramatic, I think it's not a bad idea to mention your circumstances. Just keep the discussion of your circumstances brief. I wouldn't mention the difficulty of your pre-med coursework, but you should absolutely discuss how everything fell into place once you changed your major to psychology.
  4. UCSB rejection just posted on the website, FYI. From past years, it looks like UW takes its sweet time to send out rejections. I'm actually pretty close to making a decision. The only unknown that remains is UBC's Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice program. Did anyone else apply? Has anyone heard anything?

They flew around, jealous, plotting murder, arson, etc. They were searching for hundreds of floating wildebeest. These evil bees converged into a mega bee! Zooming fiercely throughout the glen until they could find unsuspecting marsupials, the bees settled on a caribou. Meanwhile, the cat soared through the aether, gathering bundles of tiny flowers for the wildebeests' protection. The

  7. Your coworker plagiarized your work, which is a sufficient reason for BC to revoke her offer of admission. You did the right thing by contacting the admissions office. It appears that your coworker does not understand the difference between collaboration and plagiarism. It's better for her to learn the difference now, rather than one or two years into her program (with the corresponding debt). At this point, she only has her application fees to lose. It would be much worse for her to go through the pains of an Academic Integrity Committee.

  10. You have a funded offer from a more prestigious program, which provides you with some leverage to request funding from your program of choice. If they decline your request, then your reasons for declining their offer will be clear. Unless they are completely out to lunch, they will understand your decision.
  11. Well done. Good use of Tim Burton on that one. Meryl Streep was in Mamma Mia with Pierce Brosnan Pierce Brosnan was in Die Another Day with Halle Berry Those are two movies I wouldn't mind un-seeing. Alec Guiness, Amy Adams

  13. This thread reminded me of the PhD Comics strip about grad students and collegiate athletics. Here's the link in case you haven't seen it yet: http://www.phdcomics.com/comics.php?n=1402.
  14. I can't speak with any expertise on economics departments, but a rejection at a lower ranked school does not automatically herald rejections at higher ranked schools. "Fit" with the department in question is often dispositive, which leads to uneven results for individual applicants. Even if you believe your research interests align perfectly with the Econ faculty at Virginia, you shouldn't worry too much because it's only a single data point.
  15. Even if your uncle does have the same last name as you, I think it's still good experience (as long as you make substantive contributions to your uncle's research). It would be a lot more impressive if you were to attract the attention of an unrelated professor solely on the basis of your qualifications, but it's still research experience in a related field. Also, you might be able to leverage your research with your uncle to get your next offer to do research.
  16. FWIW, I agree with roguesenna. I would also caution against contacting your POI at this point in the process. Given that we are well into this cycle, the (likely) risks outweigh the (highly unlikely) potential benefits. Contacting your POI at this point might indicate that you are desperate. Unfortunately, the school that already rejected you is not going to change its decision for this cycle. Since you are still waiting to hear from other schools, it's too early to start seriously planning for next cycle. I don't recommend contacting your POI unless and until you are shut out (and I sincerely hope you are not). Even then, make sure your e-mail is a simply inquiry regarding how you can improve your application. Good luck!
  17. Any particular kind? Rye, bourbon, blended, malt....American, Irish, Scotch, Canadian?
  18. Will the faculty members be in attendance? If so, you should probably go with business casual. You want to make a good first impression with the faculty. You'll have plenty of time to dress down once you are in grad school. If it's a dinner with current students and other prospectives, go casual and wear your jeans. During my interview weekend, we had two dinner events. The first one was with current grad students and it was totally casual. The other one included the faculty members and the dress code was decidedly more formal. Good luck with your interview!
  19. Confirm the admission? Do you mean an e-mail acknowledging their letter of admission? If so, go for it. Writing a short note to acknowledge the offer is a polite way to confirm that you received it. By contrast, if you mean accepting their offer of admission, I would strongly caution against it unless you are willing to go without any funding. It's unlikely to influence their funding decision.
  20. It's neither tacky nor likely to affect your chances. That said, I wouldn't e-mail the department unless you have some reason to need the information now (for example, a deadline for accepting another offer). Instead, you might start a thread about your specific program in the forum. There may be other applicants applying to the same program with whom you can share information and commiserate. Good luck!
  21. I had a similar interview weekend a few weeks ago. For the social gathering with just current graduate students, the attire will likely be anywhere from totally casual to business casual. As long as you avoid dressing like a slob, you'll be OK. The student-only events at my interview weekend were really informal. For the social event with faculty, business casual is probably the minimum. It's your second chance to make a good impression with the faculty and to smooth out any rough edges you may have created in the interviews.
  22. If you foresee getting a full ride to any of the other law schools to which you applied, you might wait and then use those offers to encourage Drexel to pony up the rest of the law school tuition. Law schools are unlikely to negotiate unless you have a better scholarship at a higher-ranked institution, but it could be worth a shot. If not, the only other reason not to hit "send" is if you are willing to retake the LSAT and reapply next year. Even with a significant amount of preparation, you are not guaranteed to increase your score by the requisite amount. Moreover, the Drexel JD/PhD program only takes two students each year, so it's possible that you would only get into the law school your second time around. This is your dream program at your dream school with a good, if not perfect, financial package. If you're ever going to hit "send", now is the time.
  23. Agreed. Calling once to check on your application won't affect your chances, assuming you were courteous.
