  1. I see.  The program I've been accepted to is a stipend as well, along with health insurance that is covered by the college.  You have to do 1 semester of TA'ing, but the money isn't dependent on that for me.  I've got the funding guaranteed for 7 years but I really hope it doesn't take me that long ha.

Let's just hope that you can find a very prolific lab for your thesis!

  2. For all who've been accepted, what are your funding offers like?  Stipend? TAship? Health Insurance?  I thought it might be a nice side discussion to get away from the application/admission stress.

So far I have two admission offers, and they both have just stipend, and don't require students to TA or get competitive fellowship from external sources. And they both have pretty good health insurance for students, but I believe I still have to pay a small portion of the total costs. but it covers general health insurance and both eyes and dental.

  3. Accepted at Baylor College of Medicine - Neuroscience.

Two members of the admissions committee and two other PIs had made some clear hints during the interview that I was at the very top of the list, and going to be accepted. Received confirmation two days later!

A great community for research, very friendly and collaborative environment, really enjoyed meeting the people. I would say, "awesome" in a word! Good luck to all!

    Congrats!!

I'm actually interviewing at BCM this week. Although the program is different from yours, it's good to know these positive opinions about their environment and community before I get there. :)

  4. Guys, how do you know if your interviews went well in general? Are there some of you who were rejected after the interview? Did you see it coming?

I have not heard back from the schools that interviewed me at all.

I usually look back and see how much I "enjoyed" the conversations with faculty you interviewed with and other program members you had an opportunity to talk to. If you felt that you had a great time talking to them, then chances are that they did enjoy as well.

Also, I always send "thank you" email to these faculty and when I get replies with some positive comment on the admission decision, I just assume that I would have a good chance of receiving an offer.

  5. I have my 6th interview coming up for Wisconsin Madison on Wed and I'm thinking about cancelling. I already got a competitive offer from my top choice and I am exhausted from all the travelling, but I feel bad about the whole ticket cost..any advice?

I would personally recommend going even if you have offers in your hands already. I think each interview is a great opportunity to learn things that you can't from school website or brochure. You might end up liking the school a lot, who knows. :)

  6. I interviewed 2 weeks ago at Harvard SysBio and I really loved the program and faculty there. They are my very top choice (and so far maybe the only one).

Should I email the faculty with whom I interviewed??? I don’t want to be pushy, although I have already send a “thank you” email to the program coordinator.

    I would totally email them!

When I emailed to faculty at my last interview, one of them actually responded saying that he enjoyed the conversation and hoping that the program would offer me an admission.  In a time like this, knowing how exactly the interviews went from their perspectives helps anticipating the future. I think :)

  7. Question here...

I was waitlisted for Vanderbilt's IGP after my interview a couple of weeks ago, which basically means that my application is still in the pile that they're considering for now. Is there anything I can be doing to help my chances at this point? I did pretty well in my classes last semester and made the dean's list (w/2 graduate courses and 3 400 level) so I was thinking about sending them an updated transcript. I'm also planning on sending them a thank you/follow up note to make sure they know I'm still very interested. I'm worried about coming off as too pushy to the adcom...thoughts?

    Thanks for the help!

"Thank you" emails are sort of must-do thing nowadays.  I did that to all the faculty members with whom I interviewed and also program coordinator and interacted students.

and I agree that sending out any new "positive" documents to support your application would improve your app.

  8. CMB.  They have a few Skype interviews left, but I highly recommend calling Tom Atchity to get an update, he's the guy who I've been talking to the whole time.

Nice guy too, he's willing to help me out if I apply next year.

Ok thanks, I will try it now and see if I could get in touch with him.

  9. And just got called by Austin for another rejection.  Come on Einstein, papa needs a new pair of shoes!

I'm sorry to hear that...  which program did you apply at UT Austin?

I still havent heard from CMB program at UT Austin yet.  and I think their second interview weekend starts from today...  I dont know whats going on.

  10. how was the interview? and how many people were there? and congratulations :D

    Thanks!

I think there were about just over 20 interviewees there.

And everyone (students, faculty, committee, and coordinators  all of them) was super nice and friendly. The that the school is in the middle of hospital campus makes it a great environment for biomedical research program.  I loved that Blood Center of Wisconsin is literally right next to the campus.

  11. I just received an acceptance email from Medical College of Wisconsin.

Not many people here seemed to have applied here, but from what I learned at the interview, it seems like a great program.  Funding is 100% guaranteed throughout the duration of my time there.

I still have two more interviews coming up, but now I don't have to be so nervous about everything anymore.

  12. Hey guys,

quick question for those that are more well informed about the interview process. When I requested to meet with a few faculty members for the interview, a couple of them were on the finalized list whilst 2 others were added. Does this mean that the others I requested are not interested/dont have spots or could it have just been a scheduling issue and I could approach them if and when I get admitted.

    Thanks in advance!

From what I was told at my interviews, while they really try hard to match you with faculty of your interest as much as possible, they also want you to talk to at least one member of the admissions committee too.  It's just that those who had all the requested faculty in the final list were fortunate that their faculty of interest were in the committee.

I wouldn't worry at all even if only one or two of your requested faculty got in the final list.
