Follow up: do we also use our fellowship salary to pay for CPP, EI etc?
-
Hello everyone! These questions are for current / past SSHRC Postdocs: about payments and taxes. Wage: I just started my fellowship and my institution (in Ontario) is distributing the funds bi-weekly. They have calculated my salary of 70K into an hourly wage of $33.31/hour, which doesn't seem to add up. Is anyone else experiencing this? Taxes: I know SSHRC postdocs are taxable federally (which doesn't really make sense in my opinion...), but are they also taxed provincially?? I remember a post on here about this a few years ago, but the person was referring to Quebec. Not sure if it also applied to Ontario? Are any of you experiencing these types of issues? I have tried contacting SSHRC directly ... still waiting for a response, and my current institution isn't familiar with SSHRC regulations. There is very little info on the CRA website, beyond "post-docs are considered taxable." Thank you to anyone who has answers!

Timely completion -- I have no idea what they consider to be timely, especially since it ranges so much based on discipline as well as Canada vs. US or other places. I did my PhD in the US and took 8 years -- but 2 were officially in-absentia and maternity leave.

Good job to everyone - whether you got SSHRC or not - we all worked really hard! and it's just so hard post-graduate life given the lack of jobs and opportunities at the moment. We all deserve all the funding and jobs. I also got an offer. It was my second time applying. Last year I applied to committee 1 - Literature and Fine Arts and scored 13.55. I was "recommended for funding" but did not receive any. This year I applied to a different committee (2A - history) and scored 16.40. In Committee 2A there were 63 applications and 13 offers made. This year a change I made was that I included a letter explaining my lack of "timely" completion of my Phd, which I did not include in my first app, which might have helped the first round(??) -- including maternity leave that I forgot to mention, which I took a year off. This year I applied with a book contract for an edited volume with a university press, 2 new journal articles, 5 conference presentations, and 1 fellowship. This will be my second postdoc -- for the last two years I was a postdoc researcher in Europe. Good luck to everyone out there! This forum has helped relieve some of the stress, to know there are others like me out there

Yes, last day of February... I am getting impatient though!

After a year of re-thinking of book project, it was not too much of a stretch changing directions from art history to history. Yes, I did find a new supervisor and university.

What committee did everyone apply to? Any repeat applicants here, like me? Last year I applied to Committee 1, my score was recommended for funding but not enough funding to be awarded. This year, I changed the direction of my project and applied to Committee 2. Fingers crossed!

Hello! I have a quick question: I noticed on last year's forum page people said they were told their "rank" (meaning, out of the number of applicants in their committee #). Can anyone see that on their results this year? I cannot, and am wondering why they have removed this, as it would give me a bit of clarity on my chances of getting someone's declined funding. Thank you !

No luck this year. I scored 13.55 for Committee 1, and was told the "Score of the last application recommended for funding: 13.55." So this is frustrating, as I tied to receive funding, but they gave it to the other person(s) who had the same score as me. The letter also said I was recommended for funding, but not enough funds to give out. For those interested, I received a 4-year SSHRC for PhD, two book chapters, and one article (all peer-reviewed). Has anyone heard about someone receiving funding after the initial rejection in a situation like this? Congratulations to everyone (funded or not!), it was a lot of work and a long wait.

Can someone give the link? I am very confused: is extranet the same as this: https://webapps.nserc.ca/SSHRC/faces/logon.jsp?lang=en_CA ???

Also anxiously wanting to know the results, and even questioning if I applied to the right committee(?!) but when I log in I cannot see any old applications.

Has anyone heard from: UCSB? UCSD? I feel like I am the only one who hasn't heard anything yet. I am assuming I didn't get in. But I really thought I had a good chance with UCSB as I had exchanged numerous emails with a potential advisor - and even a long phone call where they said I would be an ideal candidate...
