First: Watching TV with my family at around 6pm and received the phone call. Thought it was a telemarketer at first because of the time and because it had only been 12 days since I applied. Second: Lying in bed about to go to sleep when I got the e-mail at 2:30am (?!). Third: Woke up at 11am (the day after I got the second acceptance) and checked my phone, they had e-mailed at 9am.

MA Conflict Resolution- Georgetown or American?
vityaz replied to Gamecock13's topic in Decisions, Decisions
You specifically brought up finances in your first post... This will be my last post in this thread since it doesn't seem like you'll be changing your mind, but saying you have to pay for an education to get a job is just not true. I mentioned in my previous post that there are other options, either trying to negotiate for TA/RA positions or applying to a less prestigious school that will at least partially fund you. If you do end up going this route then I really hope you end up loving your job, because you won't have any disposable income for vacations or entertainment for decades if you go through with this Masters. -
MA Conflict Resolution- Georgetown or American?

The remaining federal loan debt will be forgiven, not private. If you need to take out over $100,000 in loans, I can pretty much guarantee you a significant portion of that will have to be private. And the federal debt forgiveness will only apply if you actually find a federal job that qualifies, and if you stay in that job for 10 years without being let go or decide to leave. For some perspective, at 6.8% interest, your loan payment will be around $980 a month for 30 years. If you decide to pay it back in 10 years, that'll be $1,700 a month. It's all well and good to say you're not in it for the money so you don't care about how much it costs, but will you still be thinking that in 20 years when you'll still be paying nearly all of your disposable income on student loans? And will you be able to find a spouse that will be willing to take on that responsibility as well? You seem pretty set on these programs, but the only responsible advice I can give you is to either try to negotiate to get some scholarships or apply to cheaper/better funded programs next year. Taking on over $100,000 in loans for a Masters is not a responsible thing to do. -
My friend applied to an MA Philosophy program in Canada (he is Canadian), and his status on the application website has not changed. Acceptances were posted on this site on Feb 22nd, and rejections on Mar 10th. Does this mean he's been waitlisted? Should he give a call to the grad co-ordinator to inquire?

I don't think the lack of PhDs from your letter writers will hurt you too much, especially if you're applying for the "professional goal" stream. I also don't think not talking at length about research interests will hurt you that much either, since it won't involve a thesis. I think you'll be fine. Best of luck.

How much will you be paying for the non-funded one?

Harvard vs Oxford for Middle Eastern Studies

The difference between Harvard and Oxford is not worth $80,000. -

McMaster Cognitive Science of Language PhD: Attended their open house in October, which is a way to discriminate future students, and met some faculty members. Thought one of them was interested in my research proposal. It seems they only admit local students who only know one language and are socially awkward. Fick dich, Catherine, bloede kuh. -

Just got an acceptance from Western's Public History MA! I ended up going 3/3 with my apps

Just got an acceptance via email from UVic for the MA program.

Any news on Western's Public History MA? My status still says released from program.
-
Hahahah, this thread is even better than the last one!
-
Thanks for the info, I hope the same holds true for the Public History program. I applied there, although I don't think my chances are that great as I don't have any professional experience in that area.
-
I'm in the exact same boat. Applied to 3 schools, have only heard back from Brock with an acceptance. I heard back 10 days after I submitted the application, so having to wait is a lot less stressful than it would otherwise. Nice to know I'm definitely going to grad school in September.
-
For Western, did you apply to the MA or PhD? Also, Public History or regular?

That guy is a manipulative piece of crap. If the late penalty is in the syllabus, you have to enforce it. Don't let him get away with this "professional" garbage. If this student actually is a professional then he should be more familiar with deadlines than regular undergrads. Also, it's perfectly acceptable to respond to e-mails in that time frame. If you're busy, you're busy. You don't have to be on-call every minute of the day. He's just mad about losing 10%, don't let him get to you.

Unreasonable decisions and lack of transparency
vityaz replied to aryt13's topic in Decisions, Decisions
All of this guy's posts are just full of gold: "I demand full transparency!" "So the "I reject you because I can" response is not acceptable." "I am the customer and you are obliged to respond to my enquiries. " "I told the lecturer that I expected him to value my original work" "you can't do that to me" "I guess when they were reading my SOP, they thought it was too good to be true!" "So I am genuinely interested to see if there are more people like me out there who understand the true meaning of higher education." Thanks for the entertainment, OP. Please keep posting. -
I'm starting grad school in September, and I currently only work weekends and can take time off whenever needed. I'm in a pretty good financial situation right now so I'm going to be doing a lot of travelling. Several weeks in Europe plus some shorter trips I've been wanting to do for a while.

Am I the only one around here that finds it hilarious when egomaniacs like OP fail at something? Some people deserve being taken down a notch. -
I just bought a Toshiba Chromebook and I'm loving it. $300, 10 hours of battery life, 13" screen. If you don't need specific windows programs, or if you have a desktop you can remote in to, then it's perfect. If not, don't bother.

I doubt it. Sounds like sour grapes.

Extenuating circumstances- applying for Masters with a low GPA
vityaz replied to econaut89's topic in Applications
Can you go back and re-take any courses at Toronto? A lot of programs have a minimum GPA requirement that you need to meet to even be considered. If not, is there any diploma programs that you can enroll in? Completing a few courses and getting good grades will show that your previous grades were actually a result of the extenuating circumstances. In the meantime, keep gaining professional experience in your field and attending conferences. Honestly, your chances aren't very good. You may be able to get in eventually, but you'll need to do a lot of work to make up for that GPA.
