Apologies for the double post... but I just got into Michigan. Very excited but am going to take the next twenty-four hours to reflect on it before making a final decision. 

Holy smokes, got a call from Stanford's DGS this morning offering a place off the waitlist. I'm flying out to visit just about a week before the deadline. Feeling vaguely dazed. 

I'm an archaeologist, so this is definitely not my area of expertise, but I think I agree with heliogabalus. What are you defining as a "faithful" translation? Sometimes (especially in literary texts) sticking too closely to a word-for-word translation loses the tone or feeling of the text, which you could argue makes it less "faithful" despite being a more literal translation. 

I just got off the waitlist at UNC! Massive thanks to whoever turned them down. 

Just accepted my offer to IPCAA - will (sadly!) be declining my offer to AAMW very soon.

I've been accepted to Vanderbilt!!!!! This was my absolute first choice program, and I am unbelievably excited! I got 5 years of awesome funding with a TA-ship!!!

An acceptance!  I got into University of Arkansas!  Funding is TBA, but after straight rejections last year, this is super exciting!

Holy crap.  I just got into Virginia Tech with a fully funded GTA position and a 14K stipend!!!!! Is this real life?

Just found out that my SO was admitted to Brown's medical school this morning! After my positive experience there last week and his excitement about the med school, it's all but a given that we'll both be in Providence in the fall. SO excited to have things falling into place - this has been a wild ride! Thanks to everybody for their ongoing support throughout the whole process and best of luck to everybody else who still have big decisions to make - I have positive thoughts for all!

Now my waiting has a haiku. 

I dont know, i was looking at stanford's past three year cohorts and 8/10 are from the top undergrad institutions in the US, mostly IVYs. And then there are the anomalies, usually the intl experience folks who you cant compare necessarily. So i definitely think the bias is there, top undergrads are more likely to lead to top grads - but certainly there are exceptions.

Just got a totally unexpected letter by email from University of British Columbia.
 
"I am pleased to inform you that we are recommending your admission into the PhD programme in Anthropology..."
 
and then it gets even better:
 
"Due to your outstanding academic record, you have been selected as a recipient of UBC's premier Four Year Doctoral Fellowship...."
 
Funding includes all tuition & fees and living expenses, and any TA money is on top of that. I'm floored.
