The Waiting Game - Fall 2014

hey future anthropologists, so last year around this time radiomars started the waiting game 2013 and i found myself constantly looking at the thread to try and get a feel for the timing of everything. thought we should start one too and do some virtual hand holding through this ridiculously long process.

i just turned in my apps for berkeley, emory and u of indiana - bloomington

have chicago, harvard, then cornell and mcgill left to do until i'm fiiiinisheddd!

although now i'm wondering if i should have added another safety (after seeing some horror stories on this forum).

how are you all feeling? pumped? freaked out? how many schools are you all applying to? would love to hear about it.

good luck with the crunch!

Good call on this thread! I just submitted Cambridge yesterday, and am submitting Berkeley later today. Applying to 9 in total, a mix of reach schools and slightly more attainable programs...not that any school is really a safety school. Feeling pretty nervous, since some of my apps are pretty ambitious. But it's always worth a try right?!

Best of luck to all. Brace yourselves for the waiting.

your name is totally fitting for this forum.

for some reason i thought cambridge's anth applications were in june or something.. or maybe i'm just completely off. there goes my not well thought out plan to apply to british schools if i bomb this. and yes, you are right, there are no real safety schools. it's just last minute panic with the thought that i could throw another app in there if i so wish.

it's totally worth a try! congratulations on turning in your first application!

Haha thanks monfemme! Cambridge's general applications are due in June, but since I'm applying to a couple of scholarships everything needed to be in early. So you still have time!!

Quick question about your Berkeley Ap - Had all your recommenders submitted their letters before you clicked submit? Still waiting on one of mine, which is pretty stressful, and wondering if I can submit the rest of my application anyways.

I believe you can submit it anyway cause the final submission page includes a section for monitoring the status of supporting info, i.e. recommendations, gre and toefl scores, etc. it even includes a section where you can add recommenders (i guess in case someone doesn't come through). so, i think it's safe to assume that you can submit it and continue to tweek reco info.

nothing more annoying than pestering a recommender. gah.

So glad this is up! I submitted CUNY + Columbia yesterday, so five more to finish.  I am concerned because I didn't realize until it was too late that CUNY wants the CV and writing sample in print! Yikes! I freaked out (deadline is today, 12/1) until I found a part in CUNY's general grad admissions Q&A where they say to send writing samples to a certain email.  Usually contradictory info drives me nuts (and most programs have some of that) but I'm hoping this loophole works, or at least buys me enough time to send everything via snail mail.

Should I send snail mail anyway?  Or hope the email submit works unless told otherwise?

Anyone else running into these problems?  It's a huge headache.

FYI If anyone else is having this problem, I called CUNY and they said email is fine.  Yay!

Lackingpatience, you just made me realized I missed the application to Cambridge.  :( Like Monfemme, I thought the application was only in June. It's kind of funny but that was my "plan B" in case I won't get accepted to US schools.

Well... Back to plan A. I also submitted my apps to CUNY and Berkeley (they sure do seem popular - even with that annoying Statement of Personal History demand), as well as Chicago and Toronto.

Let the waiting begin!

You can still apply!! The December deadline only applies if you're looking for certain scholarships. If you've got external funding, or don't need special scholarships, then I'm pretty sure the deadline is still June!

Best of luck with your other apps. Glad to be done with that pesky personal history statement!

I finished the entire app for columbia in half an hour, seriously. My partner and I apply together, so we are aiming at cities that have multiple schools. Originally we did not think we wanted to live in New York, (I lived there for 2 years and liked it, but he doesn't seem to like it very much), but his advisor suggested he should try columbia and NYU, so I need to have some school to go to in NYC. Glad Columbia is quite a fit for me. However, I submitted the application one day after the deadline....

Glad to see this is up! I submitted my applications last weekend for Yale, Notre Dame, UW-Madison, UM-Ann Arbor, UT-Austin, and Purdue. Has anyone else applied for those programs? I'm so not excited for the waiting game...

I applied to UT Austin for archaeology.  Good luck, and hopefully the wait won't be too long!

Thanks! Good luck to you as well!

I am applying to McGill! Also, isn't yale's app due in january? way to be on top of it!

I couldn't tell about Yale. I thought it was due Jan 2nd until I read somewhere that you can make edits to your essay until Dec 15th, which made me think it was due before then. Either way, I just wanted to get them all done!

Hey all! I worked on my apps every wknd through October, cuz I knew I was gonna be slammed with work at the end of this quarter, and I'm glad I did.

I had a weird situation with my recommenders... 1 submitted letters like immediately, 1 did it during the last week before initial deadlines, and the last... well... I've been having to pester the heck out of this recommender because they won't get to it until the DAY OF. This last recommender is keeping my stomach in knots, but is very well-known in the field so I need that letter. Also several of the links emailed to my recommenders have expired within a few weeks, so it creates a problem of them having to re-request them. Anyone having issues with this or letters in general?

I'm also in the Berkeley and Chicago camp on this thread :) I saw 1 other say they were applying to U Mich... I'm applying for their Anthro/Hist program, which seems cool. Other schools are all listed below in my signature. Mostly reach schools but I figure, what the heck? You'll never know unless you try. Good luck to everyone!
