2015 SLP Admissions Thread

Congrats!!! It's so great to finally get validation for all that hard work. Good luck with your interview! -
You're welcome! I haven't heard it described that way but it's possible. I really want to talk to some students there and see how they like it. The structure is a recent one according to the professor I was emailing. I think he said this fall would only be the second class to be fully integrated in this new structure. Have you been accepted?
-
I do. I've had some correspondence with a professor who told me a few things. They don't have an on campus clinic but you pretty much work in actual community clinics early on and get like 100 extra clinical hours.. They've structured learning similar to med school with group projects and other classroom variations which is relatively new to their program and intense I guess but the students there are liking it he said. I think they also have an opportunity to study abroad and visit clinics in England for grads and undergrads. It sounds like a unique program. I'm definitely considering it but I'm not sure at this point. I hope to visit and get a feel for it. My main concern is the cost for out of state students. It's pricey.

I applied to the U too. All I've seen is someone posted a PHD acceptance in the results forum recently for Utah but that's all I know. I think they typically inform the second week of March. Strange how the schools with earlier deadlines seem to take the longest. BYU was my last app and yet the first to reject. I know they had about 88 applicants last year for about 16 spots.

I applied. I think it's more expensive than some of my other schools but Virginia is a cool place. Good to know! Do you know much about their program? Have either of you visited?

2015 SLP Admissions Thread

Apparently admissions decisions can be communicated even on Sundays! Just heard from University of Missouri so now I will actually have a decision to make. Exciting that I get to choose where I want to go. I wish I could make all their open houses but the distance and differing dates will probably limit me in where I can visit. Anybody have thoughts about open houses and whether to go, how to make decisions if you can't visit all the programs? -

I'm excited to join this post this year! I got my first acceptance Monday to northern Illinois as well as an invite to interview at utah state. I'm waiting on a lot of other apps still but I'm pretty happy with the idea of going to NIU. I might be starting school in just three months. Crazy. -
Utah State University - Interview and General
jpiccolo replied to rubyslp23's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Just got an invitation today to interview as well! I don't know much about their program but it's supposed to be pretty good. Better than byu but not quite as good as utah. It starts around June. I know someone who got her undergrad there in speech and i think she liked it. Usu has a good deaf masters program too. -
Luckily work keeps me busy but in the evenings I've been sorting through my belongings like clothes, textbooks, notes, etc and trying to get rid of stuff. I've accumulated a bunch in the last six years away from home so in case I make a big move this summer to a new school/location I'm consolidating a bit and donating clothes, selling some formal dresses and iPods, scrapbooking some notes and letters from friends. Learning to budget and use coupons so I can save a little money. So glad I'm done with all the fees of applications; January was a sad month for my bank account! Nothing too exciting but it's quite nice to organize my belongings.

THE WAIT IS KILLING ME!!

Amen. It's nice to know we're all in the same boat I guess! I'm sooo ready for March, though nervous what the outcomes will be. I'm tired of telling people that I hope to have positive news soon but nothing yet over and over. -
I also applied to Mizzou! Your GPA looks really good to me. I emailed them ahead of time about their average scores and this is what they wrote back: "For the MHS class that began this past summer, we had 110 applications for 20 available places. The applicants who were offered admission had combined Quantitative + Verbal GRE scores that ranged from 292-321, with written scores that ranged from 3.0-5.5. The GPA’s of those applicants ranged from 3.7-4.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework."

Worries about LORs, GPAs, and CVs
jpiccolo replied to hopefulhannah's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Not all of my schools required a resume, but the ones I did I included the most important and relevant information like jobs, internship, a volunteer experience, and leadership experience. I don't think a lot of little extracurriculars will make or break your application. They want to see that you are really interested in this field and maybe have tried to get relevant experience to show your dedication. I'd say your SOP has more pull then a resume, especially if your 'busy' resume isn't super relevant to speech therapy. I have the same concerns about my LORs. My professors didn't know me that well either so I have no idea what to expect there except I know they used information I gave them about my grades and experience. I think though if they were willing to write you letters then they at least felt confident about recommending you. Honestly I don't know that I have any major wisdom to help you. It's easy to be discouraged because this is such a competitive program. It really is. That being said, try to recognize that you've done all you can for the current app season. It's out of your hands for now and you've done your best. If you aren't accepted, take it as an opportunity to use the time for boosting your app. If you don't get in this year, consider retaking the GRE and boosting those scores. See what you can do about being an intern, volunteer somewhere, or try to find an SLPA position. I'm a second year applicant and I still feel a little unsure of myself. People keep telling me I'll get in but they really aren't in a position to say for sure. I also applied to Indiana State and I think your scores are about what their averages are. Your scores may not be the highest (and mine aren't either!) but it's still possible to get in. Just try not to get to anxious before things happen! You've got a few weeks at least until universities start sending decisions. Do some fun things and avoid looking at the results pages from years past - that has the potential to worsen your anxiety as you look at other scores and start comparing yourself. I did that a bit last year and earlier this year and it has the power to make me feel both confident and like I've got no chance. Overall I think the best thing is to try and focus on fun, non-stressful things and maybe make a tentative game plan for what happens if you don't get in. Do you want to reapply? How will you boost your app? Is there something else you'd be happy doing? Idk if that helps at all but those are my thoughts! Things will work out for all of us on here I'm sure of it. -
This is my second go around as well. I applied to five schools last year and I'd say they were mostly reach schools. I got one waitlist at least, although no one was accepted off the waitlist. I feel much more prepared this year but I still don't feel confident 24/7. It's a competitive program so we just have to try our best. I'm trying not to get too anxious about it but since I applied to 10 schools this time I think I've got a chance at a couple at least. I majored in ComD so I'm not sure if I could've done a post-bac. I knew I had room for improvement on the GRE so I studied hard and retook it. My original GRE stats were 155V, 155Q, and 4AW. I improved where it really counts (verbal/AW) and got 162V, 155Q, and 5AW this time. Obviously the GPA can't be changed too much at this stage of the game so if you have to reapply, just try to boost the other areas as much as possible. I was able to intern briefly with an SLP at my undergrad's clinic and I've been super lucky to work in the speech technology field with the SmartPalate (palatometer). I capitalized on those experiences in my SOP so I'm hoping it'll be enough. I also tried to research my schools better with a mix of reach schools and safety schools.

Do professors prefer you to ask for LOR in person?
jpiccolo replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I met with one professor during the 2014 app cycle last year (I think I emailed and asked if we could meet or discuss a possible letter of rec). The other professors last year and this year I just emailed and said something like I took your classes and I'm applying and do you think you would be able to write me a LOR? They all agreed and had different requirements for what they needed from me like a resume, strengths, experiences, transcript, etc. So it shouldn't be a huge deal to send them an email as long as you ask nicely and don't demand a letter. Most of my schools preferred faculty/PHD but asking them is best if they don't say right out. One school said they wanted to know me purely in an academic setting so I avoided sending them a LOR from the SLP I interned with. Others said at least 2 faculty. -
I think all I saw at USU was the minimum is the 40 percentile, but higher is more competitive. Yeah CSDCAS has its pros and cons. I really hate the ones that make you apply on CSDCAS and the school itself. Utah State has been annoying because they won't email my professors until the whole application is submitted, including my SOP. I'm like, just let them upload ahead of time!!
-
I haven't heard about that before but you could always try. My one piece of encouragement is that generally schools in our field aren't quite as concerned with math as the other parts of the GRE. If you feel your app is solid everywhere else, it might not matter. Of course there's no guarantee; I'd call the programs you're applying to if you are seriously considering retaking right now just in case. Good luck to you! I see you're applying to Utah State as well. Hoping to get that submitted this week.

I heard from BYU, Iowa, and Purdue last year in late February (Purdue was a waitlist, the others rejection). The other two were late March. I'm anticipating March for most this year but you never know. I've read a couple places that schools will send a first round of acceptances in early March and then it depends on how many choose not to accept the offer before they send out another round. I'm already getting nervous that after all this work I'm only going to see rejections again...the next two months I'm gonna hate looking at my email!
-
I'm not positive either, but I went through all the schools I was interested in and wrote down stats. I emailed schools and looked at their websites to find more accurate information so I would recommend doing that to be sure you feel comfortable applying there. Any that I couldn't find out I just focused on schools that my scores aligned best with (either being higher than or not too far from).
-
You can! Two of mine were mailed yesterday a week or two after my first school got mailed.
-
Yes it did! I esubmitted in late December with one school and essay. Since that deadline I have added two more schools and new essays. I just added a designation then attached the essay and paid for it.
-
Yeah they aren't very clear about it! To be safe I took off any school designations that weren't ready to submit. After e-submitting for one school, I added 2 more designations and attached essays when I was ready.
-
Sounds like a lot of us are in the same boat; second time around, better GRE score, hopefully better schools that will actually accept me. I'm applying to 10-11 I think. Depends on my sanity the next few weeks because I have so many essays to finish. So ready to just have it all done and then deal with the nerve-wracking wait.
-
If either are you are looking still I'd be willing to do a read-through, especially if you could return the favor!
-
As far as your concern about professors not really knowing you, my COMD professors that I asked don't know me well. Several have been a year or more since I was in their classes. But they were willing and asked for my resume, grades, etc, so I'm not worried. I'm also having an SLP submit one who knows me best. I know one university told me they wanted 3 faculty professors because they were only concerned about my academic performance so at least your phonetics professor can mention how well you did.
