  1. Have the same thing for one of mine as well. He seems to wait until the last minute to submit them one by one. Makes absolutely no sense.
  2. Technically speaking, you are not a native speaker. You may be bilingual, but starting a language at age 11, and even becoming fluent in it does not make you a native speaker. Mandarin is still your first language, especially with the fact that you think with it. But honestly it doesn't matter what you put on the application, there is no way you are really "lying" nor can they prove you wrong anyways.
  3. True enough. But having an adviser on board already makes it a lot easier.
  4. I've met a few people like you in my years at university. The funny thing is people who so much as think they are smarter than everyone actually often don't end up doing the best in the class. Honestly man, get over yourself. You want to debate me in my specific area of study? I'll probably talk circles around you. That doesn't mean I don't have a lot to learn and pale in comparison to others in other subjects, or even my own. Part of being an academic is learning to be humble. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. The smartest people in the room are the ones who are aware of their weaknesses and try to become better.
  5. I am done for the cycle. Good luck to everyone else.
  6. Wow, that was freaky. Apparently you can't submit the application using chrome. It worked with internet explorer.
  7. Holy shit I am trying to submit this thing but it isn't submitting. This is total bullshit there is an hour left in the deadline.
  8. It's not a red flag nor will they probably even notice.
  9. Also, keep in mind there is a bit of a tradeoff. Getting extra time is great (I had time and a half) but it also makes the test longer than it already is and more strenuous.
  10. I believe there are two options on the list: time and a half or double time.
  11. Sometimes I wonder why a lot of people who get into financial problems on here don't actually save up money before going to grad school.
  12. Have you looked at applying to dissertation fellowships? There are tonnes of internal and external awards that would provide funding for fieldwork. In my field, ABD's are expected to do approximately 1 year of fieldwork in foreign countries. If they can make it happen, so can you.
  13. Hey, Its a pretty straightforward process. You download the forms, fill them out, get a letter from your doctor (the more comprehensive the better), then mail in the application. If you are accepted you call them and book a time. Ask for time and a half, its plenty of extra time and it's almost guaranteed if you have good documentation. If you ask for more, the process becomes more stringent and less predictable.
  14. I don't think 30+ is a good measure. The vast majority of people who get hired for TT jobs are between the ages of 30 and 40.
  15. We're adults here. Whether someone smokes or not has really nothing to do with being a good student or researcher.
  16. Or you could just leave your class early/go later and go to her office hours. It's not like its the end of the world to miss a bit of class.
  17. ^ The requirement is that you graduate with first class honours with your bachelors. Honestly, it doesn't even matter what your "hope" is. IMO, if you meet the requirements, you apply, its worth it anyways.
  18. If I heard someone say this I would disregard everything she had said about the scholarship. What an absolute garbage statement.
  19. ^ Pretty nervous about mine as well.
  20. Totally agree with rising_star. Most of Latin American countries speak Castellano Spanish (the exception is Rioplatanese which is common in Argentina/Uruguay/Paraguay), which is the same Spanish that most of Spain speaks. The only really difference is different slang/word usage and the congrugation of vosotros. The cheapest places to study Spanish are Bolivia, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Ecuador. These places you are looking at $6-8 an hour for 1 on 1 lessons, which is nothing. Find a sublet for your apartment during the summer and you could realistically live in these places for the same price that you would have spent at home anyways. If you have any questions, ask me, I know a lot about this subject, I have and am currently studying Spanish in Latin America and have lived here for multiple years.
  21. Did she already agree to write you a letter or are you just asking her now? Because if its the latter, asking a prof for the first time to write you a LOR by email is a bit ridiculous if you are still attending the university IMO.
  22. I understand what you are saying, and I would agree if it was a broader topic, but the fact is you aren't going to find that many departments with a strong focus on politics and women. In fact, that's probably exactly why this thread even exists, because the OP couldn't find any really. I am just saying that it might be a better strategy to look for scholars that do research on the subject and base your search around them, rather than look for departments that specialize in this because there may not be many.
  23. Do you know who Mala Htun is? She is a professor at University of New Mexico and does a lot of comparativist work on the state and women. I suggest looking for scholars who fall within this category, not programs that are geared towards this.
  24. Times New Roman 12 pt. Pretty standard stuff.
