  1. Which faraway lands? If Italy is one of them, sign me up to help out! Do you plan on going on to get a PhD then?
  2. I have been trying to decide on getting a new macbook pro (or air) and getting a Windows 8 tablet with a docking keyboard as well...I want something small to carry with me (not that MacBook Pros are large), but the ghost file thing on Macs is so annoying for me. I am a writer and so I have tons of documents that I like to keep organized and it is virtually impossible on a Mac. I have dropbox which helps quite a bit, but Windows does so much better with keeping things organized.
  3. Out of curiosity, what does everyone want to do post-MFA?
  4. Good luck and may the force be with you, sir!!!!
  5. From the history that is showing up on the admission results page it looks like IU is going to be awhile. I wouldn't say anything to them until next week at the earliest. I know, I know the wait is horrendous, but the last thing you want to do is to piss someone off if they haven't made decisions yet.
  6. Emotionally well rounded? You make me chuckle! Supposedly (I have not researched this, but it is what I have heard), last year was the last year (or this current year that will end in spring) is the last year Emerson will offer funding. Even if this is false info Emerson does not offer TA spots, although your second year or second semester (I can't remember which) you can TA at a couple other Universities in the area. To do this you have to apply and the faculty chooses two-ish people out of everyone who applies and the stipend is minimal. As for the funding they offered last year I believe there were four $5k fellowship grants, two $10k, and one that was $15 or $18k. I am fuzzy on the exact details but these fellowships are dispersed among the approx 45 students accepted to the program each year (the exact number and amounts are probably off). It seems they favor fiction writers, which is no surprise as the department head last year was a fiction writer. To my knowledge of the 10-ish poetry applicants only one received funding and it was $5k. Emerson also extended their deadline last year to apply, twice, which was the only reason I applied. I think they are struggling to get good applicants with their lack of funding. I attended their welcoming day as well and at the end of the second day they had a get together at a local venue where faculty were supposed to be present so you could meet them and talk with them as well as current students, other applicants, etc. but, the grad director and Pamela Painter were the only people who showed up faculty-wise giving the impression the faculty didn't really care. I am not saying Emerson is a bad program, they have great journals and some great faculty members and alum. Be cautious though!
  7. No, I did not apply there, but I was going to say if you were poetry I wouldn't sweat it. Poets are notorious for being late with everything, all the time, always. However, from what I understand (and I may have already posted something similar to this in this thread) regardless of what program you applied to nonfiction applicants are usually notified first, fiction second, and poetry third. While this week is a big week to hear back from schools, March 10th is probably the biggest date to hear from schools. If you haven't heard anything by then (especially for fiction) it is probably okay to follow up with the school. Although you may want to wait an extra day or so. AWP was later than usual this year which I think is throwing a lot of schools off. I have compiled most of this information from an old professor who has served on selection committees. What he has told me thus far has proven to be fairly accurate. Hopefully this helps you some, I know it doesn't make the wait any easier really, but hopefully you will hear something soon. Lastly, check out http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=Creative+writing&t=a&o=&pp=25 if you haven't already. It might help some too! Good luck!
  8. My fingers are crossed for you, IU has a faculty member that is really into incorporating components of hip-hop into their work, right? Or am I making that up?
  9. Haha, I know how you feel. The application process makes certain you are as enamored as possible with the programs you apply to and with writing. If it makes you feel any better I misspelled Cincinnati in my header for my U of Cin application (I don't know how I missed that) and last year my friend spelled stock as stalk in her personal statement (it also was sent to U of Cin), so it is safe to say they think we can't spell. Don't count yourself out on anything though until it is set in stone, if your passion came through in your personal statement and you have a strong writing sample it will speak volumes. Also, in the midwest all you tiny eastern states are the same! I was out in Maryland several months ago and it boggled my mind that I could go through so many states in so few hours. Just sit tight, keep your fingers crossed, and you will end up where you should be. Worst case scenario you don't get funding and don't go (I don't know if that is where you are at or not with things). Last year Emerson accepted me but didn't offer enough funding, so I worked on my writing for another year and started working for the journal River Styx. And you can call me Melanie! Also, if you want to check out some phenomenal translations look up "The Arrival" by Daniel Simko. The name of who translated the poems into English isn't coming to me right now, but they are beautiful. It is by far my favorite book of poetry.
  10. Thank you! I hope you hear something soon from one of the schools you have yet to hear from. I almost applied to IU they have a great faculty as does Alabama. I know several people who went to Alabama and they are all beyond phenomenal writers. Do you have a top choice?
  11. So, it looks as if the poets at GMU are sticking to the true nature of poets in their lateness. While I know for a fact nonfiction TA applicants were called for interviews a few weeks ago, I just got a call this morning about scheduling a TA interview at George Mason. They will be doing them the 18th-21st. Good luck to any other applicants!
  12. You are the best! I wanted to "like" it but couldn't. You've definitely made my life better because I will think of this overtime I get a rejection. I guess I will forgive the fact your alma mater is kU since you are funny! And Michigan doesn't know what's good, neither does Syracuse.
  13. Haha, feel bad about society, at least staring at this will get your mind of waiting to hear back from schools! I also don't know if it is okay to be comparing my "body" of work or anyone else's to Honey Boo-Boo's belly. Hopefully no one takes offense .
  14. Here is another little something to refer to when you get those silly rejections, at least it has eased the sting of my first rejection:
  15. Nothing I try helps. I finally got away from my computer and drank several shots of Fireball with a friend and that kept me from checking my phone every two minutes (it turned into more like every 30 minutes). Things are just going to suck until you hear and that is all there is to it. I can barely even keep up with work I have to do because I am so consumed with waiting to hear something! Hang in there!
  16. Also if you choose exercise leave your electronics at home or it will just turn into working out while checking your email or to see if you missed a call every two minutes.
  17. I would suggest Pokemon X or Y because of your photo, but even that is not helping me right now. I play for approximately two minutes (if that) then check my email and then check the admission results board on here. I may very likely die.
  18. Not to spam up this thread, but this is how I feel: http://media.thedailytouch.com/2013/10/waiting-for-the-phone-to-ring.jpg
  19. I hear ya! I literally want to just curl up in a ball and sleep until I know something one way or another. Schools should have disclaimers about the mental turmoil that the waiting game causes.
  20. I know they have sent several rejections out (from what friends have said), it seems they notify as they go if you are rejected. So it is a good thing if you haven't heard anything thus far. My friend who applied for the fiction program got a rejection a few weeks ago.
  21. Supposedly THE big date to hear from most schools is March 10th (some may be a little sooner). Portland State University should notify this week. Applied: GMU, U of Cin (BA-PhD), U of Utah (BA-PhD), Portland State University, Old Dominion University, EWU, U of Montana Rejected: Syracuse
  22. Old Dominion will probably not notify anyone about anything until around St. Patricks day from what the department head said at AWP this weekend.
  23. I was at AWP this past weekend and talked to Portland State University, the poetry department is behind the other departments, but I was told they would make calls for acceptances Sunday (yesterday). In the poetry world that probably means end of this week....
