Paging the BioAnthro international applicant who was admitted to the UofT... Would you be kind enough to PM me? I have a question for you, if you do not mind. Thanks! -
What software do you use/find indispensable?
goukaku suru you ni replied to Postbib Yeshuist's topic in Officially Grads
I am a mac user and these are my favorite programs: adobe premiere cs3 for video editing: audacity for sound editing; mpegstreamclip for resizing and converting audiovideo files; name mangler for well, renaming files, and; subsfactory or miyu for writing subtitles. Also, synapsen hypertextual index for compiling research materials was a lifesaver when i was writing my thesis. In a blink of an eye, this software can automatically generate your bibliography. Now I sound like a salesperson, haha! There are various online softwares and freebies which are simply fabulous such as: http://citationmachine.net for generating your bibliography http://ccmixter.org for creative commons music www.freesound.org/for creative commons sound effects -

Hi! was told by the graduate coordinator of the anthro dept that they have only few places for internationals because of budget constraints. Another professor wrote that it would be helpful if internationals could bring in some funding from external sources. i am sorry i dont have information about other programs. hope this helps, though. -

Hi. it doesnt have a submit button. just upload all of your documents before the deadline and you'll be fine. -
sorry, a bit off topic but still about the applications... do you think the selectors print the documents we have uploaded (SOP, writing sample, etc) or do they view them from their respective computers? I'd like to add html links to websites but im not sure if I should spell them out (i.e. www.google. com) or if I can make it simpler like Google. If they print the documents, then the shortened weblinks will be rendered useless. what do you think? thanks in advance.

hi! thanks. i figured it out. -
darn, why do they have to require applicants to submit SEALED transcripts? how come they haven't streamlined this process yet? come on, GO DIGITAL! imagine the reams of paper that could be saved if all schools accept digital copies first.

hi. anybody applying to Brown Anthro-PhD? They don't seem to require university transcripts or am i being blind again?? I can't see any upload button for transcripts?

Cutoff Point for Contacting Professors
goukaku suru you ni replied to maxmarx's topic in Sociology Forum
hmm... i think it depends. if you recently learned about this professor whose interest really matches yours, then it's probably okay to send an email. I contacted some professors in a certain uni a week ago and surprisingly they replied to my inquiry. Some of the professors I emailed half a year ago, did not even reply to me, so maybe what really matters is the professor's interest in what you intend to do. -

there's no SUBMIT button in the Univ of Toronto Online Application? Am i missing something or should i leave the application as it is? I'm done uploadeding all the necessary documents. thanks! -
Hi. did you mention the names/research of the professors you hope to work with? that's what i did in my SOPs.

i had a question but i erased it already. shy to ask hehe -
hey, thanks. Prof. Sanday who's a southeast asian specialist is already retiring. one of the professors whose research overlaps with mine replied and encouraged me to apply but i think there might be a lot of applications doing central/south america. after a lot of online research, graduate application committees seem to greatly consider the available support for the applicants' regional or geographical (not thematic) focus.
-
it seems that the areas of concentration of the UPenn anthro faculty is predominantly central and south americas. i wondering if people who have southeast asia as regional focus would stand a chance... what do you think, guys? thanks.

sometimes i wish i hadnt contacted my prospective professors. i feel like i bothered them too much this year.
-
i havent taken the GRE too. im submitting it after the deadlines. i emailed some schools and they said they mostly say that they're okay with late GRE results. usually they'd reply that it will be just more difficult to evaluate a late application. i dont know, im actually thinking of not taking the GRE at all. hehe

Telling a Professor you no longer want their rec
goukaku suru you ni replied to abolitionista's topic in Officially Grads
such a meanie. you should not tolerate this outright academic bullying. perhaps you can talk to the dean to discuss the way the professor treats you. it might also help to try to talk to your mean professor first. -
