  1. I'm willing to have a look. You can PM me.
  2. I applied unsuccessfully to that program last year and from my experience I would say that if you can get a high score, then I would recommend doing the GRE. Toronto is like a top 10 US school for CS. It is very competitive - just look at the number of rejections on the survey on this site from last year. While the GRE is only recommended, if you can score highly then I would suggest you take it to give yourself a better chance. If you're not sure that you could score highly, then focus on the more important parts of your application such as your SoP.
  3. I'm sorry to hear that it didn't go so well. Was the quant or the verbal the problem - or was both of them low? I'd like to think that schools will look past a lowish GRE score if the rest of the application is great, but you're right, it would help to get above 1200.
  4. I think that should your peers find out about it, that they will probably suspect something nefarious or at least the thought will cross their mind. That is, unless they know the quality of your work. In my own case, if I were your peer and I knew you were capable of producing high quality work on your own, I wouldn't think anything of it. If I knew you had difficulty producing high quality work, I would wonder. I guess it boils down to how much your peers' opinions of yourself will have an effect on you. Do you value this relationship enough that even though your peers might frown on it you would still be happy in it? As for your career, I don't think it *should* have an impact on your career since no policies are being violated, and ultimately you will be judged on the quality of your own work (perhaps I'm being nave in this).

  12. It doesn't say much about you at all. Perhaps you should briefly say something about what made you interested in this area. Also, as the poster above said, 'hence' doesn't really fit in at all. Perhaps also this should be in the 'Statement of Purpose' subforum here, since this forum is for people who are trying to decide which school they should go to after they have been admitted.
  13. Hi DrFaustus666, I think you got me mixed up with someone else since I don't remember posting that list. It looks like a good one though Another list I found helpful is this one: http://www.graduates...e.com/list.html I agree with what's been said here, just memorize as many words as you can and make sure to do practice tests. Try to get some good rest the night before the exam though.
  14. Well, not everyone would necessarily use that order. Some people are more into teaching than research and so would put TA above RA. Also, some schools have earlier deadlines for applicants who want fellowship consideration, so there is that to consider as well.
  15. Most places recommend that if you want to get a PhD eventually, that you should just apply straight to the PhD. As truediarist mentioned, some places don't have research based MS because they expect people who are interested in doing research to apply for the PhD - so you should consider that. For applications to research based degrees, the most important thing the admissions committees consider is your past research experience and your readiness to do research in grad school. Do you have research experience? Without research experience, it is going to be very difficult to get into a top 10 school.

    CV format

If you look at the CVs of profs and grad students, you will see CVs that are longer than 3 pages. So 3 pages I don't think is necessarily too long, as long as you have relevant information in there. If there are details that aren't necessarily relevant to your program, perhaps you should limit it to 2 pages. I'm not in your field so take this with a grain of salt, it may be different for your particular program.
  17. If you need another set of eyes I'd be happy to look it over for you.

  20. Also bear in mind that sometimes limits are set by the grad school and not by the particular department. There have been cases where the grad school application said something like 500 words, but when the department is contacted, they say they do not have a limit. So if there are schools in particular that you are concerned about, it may be worthwhile to ask the department.
  21. It might be. It really depends on the program - some recommend less than that while I've seen others that had 1200-1500 limits, and if the program recommends a limit, I wouldn't go too further above it. Remember ,you will have to try to gain and keep the adcomms attention while they review your SoP so you don't want it to be so long that you lose them. That said, if your SoP doesn't have any unnecessary information (or fluff) and it reads interestingly from start to finish, then you could use it, as long as a program doesn't have a hard limit that is less than that.
  22. I'm not in grad school (yet, hopefully) but if I were in your situation I would email him again just to say that you are following up on the situation. It is possible that he has been busy, although I think he really should have got back to you given how much work you put into this. And no I don't think your academic reputation is down the drain at all. If you're aware that you're suffering "impostor syndrome" then you're also probably aware that practically everyone, if not everyone, goes through this at least once in grad school. Just hang in there and keep putting your best effort at what you do - eventually you'll start to get the hang of things more and not feel like you don't fit in.
  23. Often schools take on less students during Spring admission, so it could be that the chance of admission would be less likely. Also, some schools (including some top schools) do not have spring admissions, so applying in the spring might limit your options. You might want to check with the schools you are interested in to see how many students they take on in the spring and also to see if potential advisors (you are in Physics right?) would be taking students in the spring.. On the other hand, having an extra year of research (particularly quality research that leads to a publication) would definitely help your application.
