  1. Okay you got my attention. If you want " the spice," then try Kenneth Grant. Really anything by him is hours of fun. I had high hopes for "Occult America"
  2. My understanding is that the cheaper you are, the higher your probability of acceptance (hold everything else constant). Assume that is true, being in state for tuition purposes would be a plus.
  3. Started "Stoner" by John Williams.
  4. Two weeks: never be fooled into thinking business relationships are anything but.
  5. Double that. It always helps to have date(s) handy just in case.
  6. Perhaps I am overlooking something, but this seems to be just an integer programming problem.
  7. Nice one.
  8. Hardly naivete, if anything the rule that no funding = rejection is one of the few glimmers of cold realism displayed by applicants. This is a game about expected values.
  9. My Plans are Simple: 1) Prep for the Analysis comp so I can get that out of the way pronto 2) Figure out a way to convince my current employer to give me a consulting gig 3) TBD But why not enjoy this last bit of undergrad freedom?
  10. Sure, if there was no cost to apply (time or otherwise), but there is and managing expectations is not a bad thing.
  11. Once admitted recent grads are game on.
  12. Basically the fact you get to pay for the application experience would be on the top of the most annoying list. A lame filter: why not refund the those rejected as a consolation prize (sans interest).
  13. Congrats! A nice feather to have in your hat so early on. And now for the tin foil hat bit: a couple of years ago that very university sent out an email stating that recipient was in the number one spot on the wait-list and that they expected to offer them admission soon and to contact them before making any decisions...thirty or so minutes later they noted that the email was a mistake and sent to basically everyone not admitted in the first round. At the very least a fun moment for some people.
  14. Well, this seems to be the most interesting thread at the moment. Bring on the T&A
  15. I was under the impression that printing of emails was general policy across accredited universities as a risk prevention policy. FWIW: I skimmed one of my folders and it appears they basically have every form regarding my application in it. Nothing surprising.
  16. Faraday? yuck yuck yuck...
  17. The best I have to offer is that one of my applications was sent to committee. Keep in mind that a) the end of Dec. early Jan was basically a holiday; b ) neuroscience seems to account for a lot of activity. Best of luck and now back to "f5" land
  18. Nice set (guitars and skill); a red Hamer flying v is on the list. Something fast is part of plan b. I bought the guitars I wanted when I was younger: 89 RG550 and a minty 91 UV7BK (so very worth it). I am having a blast learning how to play again. Sadly, I am one of those “bad guys” you read about in the news, so my expected grad/post-grad income will be far, far lower than now.
  19. No worries, we need the traffic.
  20. Holy zombie thread batman. Anyway, Dudley's book is notable for the treatment of sex in number theory (check the index ).
  21. Are you sure want a statistics degree? It seems like a program in econometrics would satisfy your requirements (there are more economics programs than stats). That said your stats look pretty good regardless of your choice. Just take the power-prep tests and you should be ready to go wrt the GRE general test.

    SOP Wordles!

Whoa...when I saw that I thought "how did my wordle get on the interwebz." Hmmm...
  23. I gave in and purchased a guitar after playing (at least okay) ten or more years ago. This is going to take time. And planning plan b, should the app thing fail, purchase of veblen goods.
  24. I am from the "keep the SOP focused on strengths" school of thought and would not mention it. You have limited space to give information about yourself and they already have the gre scores. So give them something interesting to think about in the SOP.
