  1. I am strongly considering accepting at East Bay today -- (I know it's my last day) but I am terrified of cost of living in the area!! My BF and I don't need a big place, 1bdrm is fine, but he needs to have a garage, as he builds and restores furniture for his business. Anyone have any insight as to how to make this work for a relatively reasonable amount of money?? I grew up in the bay area but haven't lived there in 12 years, and I really don't know much about neighborhoods / cities in the east bay.

At least you're not in SF where the cost is much higher!

Hayward is a bit cheaper than the bigger cities, but if you move farther south or east, then you'll find even less expensive areas. Depends on how much you want to commute.

  2. In addition to the class problem, the admissions representatives told me that with my GPA, I would be a much more competitive applicant if I took a Postbac year and earned a 4.0 in those courses. Hence, I didn't think I would get in this time around.

They didn't say much about clinical placements, but they have a lot in-house. In addition, you're in the heart of one of the most popular regions of CA. I doubt opportunities are hard to come by.

  3. What worried me in their info session is their reasoning for taking so long. Grad students get least priority for undergrad classes. Therefore, there is a risk of not getting the classes you need, a problem that has become endemic in some cal state schools due to budget cuts.

  4. Out of curiosity - why not CSUN for post-bacc? It's so much closer to you - but you know that already as you went there I suppose!

Isn't CSUN online? With the discontinuation of Long Beach's postbac, the only postbacs in LA County are CSULA and Dominguez. There is also Redlands' 2.5 year masters, Chapman's postbac (OC), and CSUSM (SD County), but they're all very far away.

  5. 1. I'm not sure, but I think classes are all day. They don't recommend working or commuting, and instead renting a place in redlands. I'm not sure about the practicum schedule, but I'm sure they make it work with classes.

    2. Faculty seem welcoming. They invite students to work on research, and have a thesis option.

    3. Apparently you request location, and they find a place for you. So they have hookups in Hawaii, NYC, not just the Empire.

  6. @Chandru1 - I will probably not have time to get out to see Redlands because it is so far away from where I live. Since you went to the info session, could you possibly share some details (either here or PM)? I am seriously considering this school. Thanks!

    Sure!

As I said before, Redlands is 2 hours east of LA. You take I-10 (or 210 if you're coming from the valley, 57 from OC) past the suburbs of LA and San Bernandino County.

The campus is small-ish, but very nice, with lots of green lawns. It was surprisingly quiet for a weekday evening though.

The program is ~$30K a year. In field students start in August but out of fields start in January.

It has classes and practica for both schools and hospitals. Your medical externships can be done anywhere, even Hawaii.

They have a water cooler that they are very proud of.

Let me know if you have more questions!
