  1. If you are worried about security, west and south SJ are nice and safe, with light rail service to the university.
  2. ETS = educational testing service. The people who make the GRE.
  3. https://m.facebook.com/groups/402035533241241- very active group for SLPs working in the school setting. I've been on the group for ~1 year, and have seen the highs and lows of daily life as a school SLP. SLP.reddit.com - another great resource for SLPs working in a variety of settings. There's also a speech reads book club on goodreads with some interesting books that are to be discussed!
  4. If the school wants you they'll accept you regardless of GPA. I got into UTD (#11) with a 3.1.
  5. At least you're not in SF where the cost is much higher! Hayward is a bit cheaper than the bigger cities, but if you move farther south or east, then you'll find even less expensive areas. Depends on how much you want to commute.
  6. By in field I meant postbac as well. I need to stop posting here late at night...
  7. Sac State is the most responsive, as I have talked to the director of the program twice over the phone. Chico is pretty good about responding to emails too. Never contacted fresno. Are you in or out of field? If the latter, only sac will take you, and that's for their second bachelor program.
  8. Congratulations and welcome to California!
  9. UoP is much faster than SJ if items something.
  10. I know CSUEB has problems with getting required undergrad classes as a grad student, but I haven't heard the same for SJSU. That alone is a reason for me to choose SJSU.
  11. In addition to the class problem, the admissions representatives told me that with my GPA, I would be a much more competitive applicant if I took a Postbac year and earned a 4.0 in those courses. Hence, I didn't think I would get in this time around. They didn't say much about clinical placements, but they have a lot in-house. In addition, you're in the heart of one of the most popular regions of CA. I doubt opportunities are hard to come by.
  12. CSU East Bay is located in a nice part of the city of Hayward, within a short drive/train ride to SF and the rest of the Bay Area. They seem to focus heavily on aphasia.
  13. Dr. Stillman is SWAMPED right now as the campus is in the middle of a reaccreditation visit. Hence you may not get a timely response.
  14. What worried me in their info session is their reasoning for taking so long. Grad students get least priority for undergrad classes. Therefore, there is a risk of not getting the classes you need, a problem that has become endemic in some cal state schools due to budget cuts.
  15. I personally wanted a program on the semester system. I have spent 4 years on the quarter, and it's too fast paced. The grad stidents at my sxhool feel that quarters were not enough for meaningful work. This affected the schools I applied to.
  16. @Katha: I've lived in San Jose for over a decade, though I'll be moving away If you have any questions about the area let me know!
  17. Yes, but you're on your own for housing!
  18. Isn't CSUN online? With the discontinuation of Long Beach's postbac, the only postbacs in LA County are CSULA and Dominguez. There is also Redlands' 2.5 year masters, Chapman's postbac (OC), and CSUSM (SD County), but they're all very far away.
  19. Done! But I'm also keeping the old name so every UTD SLP can join.
  20. 1. I'm not sure, but I think classes are all day. They don't recommend working or commuting, and instead renting a place in redlands. I'm not sure about the practicum schedule, but I'm sure they make it work with classes. 2. Faculty seem welcoming. They invite students to work on research, and have a thesis option. 3. Apparently you request location, and they find a place for you. So they have hookups in Hawaii, NYC, not just the Empire.
  21. Sure! As I said before, Redlands is 2 hours east of LA. You take I-10 (or 210 if you're coming from the valley, 57 from OC) past the suburbs of LA and San Bernandino County. The campus is small-ish, but very nice, with lots of green lawns. It was surprisingly quiet for a weekday evening though. The program is ~$30K a year. In field students start in August but out of fields start in January. It has classes and practica for both schools and hospitals. Your medical externships can be done anywhere, even Hawaii. They have a water cooler that they are very proud of. Let me know if you have more questions!
