Guaranteed funding for only three years
Cpoco replied to juiceboxrampage's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Get your Master and bail. Fire against fire. -
At least it is recommended by me and many other people that you simply throw away Phd offers without funding especially you are an international student. Main Reason: 1. You cannot work during your stay in the U.S.. This means your tuition and life expenses have to be fully paid by yourself. The only exception are on-campus jobs, and a 12-month OPT period, in which you are allowed to be hired. But to solely rely on these sources for your financial well-being is unthinkable. So again, be prepared to pay most of your tuition and expenses. I don't know about your economic condition, but this is too painful/impossible for most families. 2. A degree will not automatically boost your chance to get a well-paying job or stay in the U.S.. Balancing the cost and gains you would find that it is not worth it.

I guess some exceptionally good candidates will be contacted and accepted early. But it doesn't mean late messages are all rejections, right?
-
Your GRE V and Q are low. Could be part of the reason. *Don't worry. It seems I am also getting all-rejection this year. You are not alone.

To those who have experiences in philosophy and theoretical writings, I have a question. What is the prose style, upon seen by most professors, will start to get their heads nodding right away? Or is it that the style doesn't really matter as long as the argument is solid? On the other side, what prose(s) will immediately raise a red flag and get frowned upon? If so, what trends or ecology do you think this reflects in today's English speaking theory world?

I didn't know I could have met some professors in person and have a preliminary talk in order to boost my chance of admission until someone told me I could do so recently.

I am totally fine with all this emotional shit. It's just that my parents are virtually killing me by flogging me with world-crumbling fantasies and anxiety-provoking admonishments.

Sociology prof who will answer any question about grad school applications
Cpoco replied to SocProf's topic in Applications
Hi Prof, I know this might sound just stupid but what is the role psychoanalysis plays in today's sociology? Which university/college programs encourage psychoanalytically and meta-analytically oriented research? If that exists, I would be very interested to apply. Thanks! -
I only uploaded my essays to Academia.edu, so if they really bother to go to that site, they would definitely know the author is me. I do wish everything shall turn out just fine as you suggested. Thanks for the reply.

Hi folks. I have been waiting for my decisions, and there recently comes to my mind a practical concern. After I submitted my applications, I put my writing samples online in order to get some critique, and my essays are fully indexed by Google. So now I am worrying about that when the admission committees use stuff like Turnitin.com or something like that, it will raise a big red flag on their end because an identical essay will certainly be matched by Google. I am afraid that if they are not patient enough to actually check whether that source belongs to me, they will simply consider my writing sample as plagiarism and discard my application? What are your thoughts and experiences on this issue? Thanks!

Please please.

I am asking because I just got my rejection letter from them today. If you get accepted, could you please share your research interests and personal statement so people who really want to get in for the next wave may learn from your success? Thank you in advance.

If your "decision to pursue Control systems and Automation" is truly resolute, you shouldn't be posting this topic/question right now, should you?
-
Do admissions committees care if you submit at the last minute?
Cpoco replied to cafe_au_lait's topic in Applications
Submitting very early before the dealine, you would be worrying instead: "oh my god, they probably think I am using a generic template! That's why this student apply so quickly!" Just calm down. -
Will I, realistically speaking get into the top 50-60 college?
Cpoco replied to Vrishabh's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Why do you need to go to graduate school? From your pretty impressive achievements already, I can tell you are more of a realistic, "money" person than a person who is into research and esoteric theories. You study those in graduate schools. -
Waiting Game--how do you deal with the waiting anxiety?
Cpoco replied to procedural memory's topic in Waiting it Out
My suggestion is to simply prepare yourself emotionally and materially for the case of being rejected by all because considering the extreme competitiveness that's the most likely outcome. Make a plan to learn about this failure and try to understand it is not an utter failure as long as experiences are gained. Also decide on what to learn in the next year in order to become a better applicant for the next time. -
I feel like I'm not applying to enough schools. Help.
Cpoco replied to ivmeow's topic in Applications
I personally do not suggest doing over 8 schools. Writing a good SoP for each is truly a pain in the ass. -
Hi everyone. I am currently struggling with writing a good SoP because I have the following two major questions that bother me: First, when answering the question "why you decide to pursue a graduate education", is it better to play the safe card by formally and solemnly mouthing holy purposes or rather genuinely express true personal affect and desires that lead to my will to apply? I personally lean towards the latter since I feel the safe card definitely won't hurt me but will neither benefit me; it might be worthy to take some risk so my SoP could actually stands out. What is your opinion on this? Second, is it appropirate to exhibit pleading or begging tone in my SoP(ex. difficulty combatting with parent's adversary, philistine etc.) as a strategy to win sympathy assuming it is done in a measured way? Or is it better to avoid using emotional strategy completely? What do you think? Thanks!

First, thanks for the reply. Why do you think EGS is a vanity project? Could you be more specific on that? Also, by the way, it is not the body of anime itself that I want to take on, but rather it is the phenomena of it, which sometimes is totally irrelevant to the materiality of this medium.
-
Don't take it personally if i am wrong, but by proposing this school, are you implying that there is little chance for me to aim for those in my list?
-
I study visual arts practices and theories in college. My research interests lie in Lacanian psychoanalysis, anime, critical theory and feminism. This fall I am applying to grad programs. Here is the school list. I greatly appreciate some suggestions from people so I can finalize my decisions. Thanks in advance! Brown U, Modern Culture & Media; MIT, Comparative Media Studies; U of California Berkeley, Rhetoric; U of California Irvine, Visual Studies; U of Minnesota, Communication Studies; European Graduate School, Communication; U of Wisconsin-Madison, Communication Arts; U of California Santa Cruz, History of Consciousness My GPA: 3.5+ GRE: 161, 163, 3.5
