  1. As someone currently enrolled in teachers college I have an outsider (while inside view) on job prospects. I'm currently in a two year program at an Ontario university in the first year. I thought really long and hard about teachers college. The field is flooded with teachers and even with the changes to two years, the years of backlog will take a while to fix. What does this mean for you as an applicant, well that honestly depends on your teachable. Your aunt is correct but is is so dependent on so many factors. There are different places to get information, OCT publishes a study every year and the new one just came out. The ETFO and OSSTF have information. You can join facebook groups (PM me, I will give you a list) of different teacher groups about careers. Do not want to be a debbie downer but want to make sure everyone makes the best decision for their situation.
  2. Totally different program but I really need to contact some of you Lakehead Orillia people as I will be there next year and looking for either a rommate or carpool from Mississauga/Toronto.
  3. Typically check my emails roughly 50 times a day. That started to wind down about the last two weeks since I had convinced myself to start prepping for plan B and plan B which was finding fulltime employment was surprisingly going well. So well that at for the last few days before I got accepted I never checked anywhere. Then in the off chance I decide to check one schools portal system...an acceptance letter was sitting in the folder and it had been their a few days and only had another week to respond. Almost screwed that up.
  4. I asked several programs this at a grad school fair, before I settle on teachers college was going to apply to MSc but I needed more courses in that area. A lot of people end up taking a summer course and have an official graduation date of November. As long as your final transcript is in before your start date, you should be fine. However after you receive acceptances just make the schools aware of the change. Just want to add: Guelph and UVic were schools I talked to about this.
  5. Congrats Autumnreads!!!! I have until March 2nd to hear from all the programs. The wait is driving me insane. The only good thing has been that due to the changes in education program, the numbers of application seems to have dropped as 7 programs in Ontario have opened up applications again. There are 12 programs available on OUAC, and that does not include the three programs including UofT this year. Thinking about throwing another application out there in the next week.
  6. I think what driving me crazy is this last semester grades are need (degree rewarded already) and I was just taking them for a GPA boost if I dont get in this year. Which means if I do get in (March 2 for Bed, not sure for MT at UofT) I can drop these courses and just breath.
  7. Im not sure how the shuttle works for graduate level programs, but it is free for UTM undergrad students. Just want to point out the commute from St. George to UTM is actually roughly an hour (the shuttle is longer)and it does not involve the GO Train or Bus. I now live in Mississauga close to UTM and work downtown. From St. George station to Islington station, roughly 25 minute subway ride. Then take 101 to UTM, roughly 30 minute ride on express bus that drops you off right in campus. Just wanted to add: Grad house to St. George station is less than 10 minute walk or you can take a streetcar that will drop you off on the Green line (2 minute streetcar ride and the stop is right across the street from grad house). The commute just sucks in the winter time.
  8. UTM is not a separate University fromm University of Toronto, its just a different campus like UTSc (Scarborough campus). Therefore there is no such thing as a UTM degree. (Knowledge Source: I went to UofT). Anyways I would actually not recommend living in Grad House if your program is located at UTM, the commute between the two is awful and long. It can be up to a hour and a half and even longer during the winter just due to it taking a horrible route. Also most of your classmates will probably be living around UTM for that simple fact. UTM has some townhouses residence that you should look into.
  9. That really depends on the school. I'm applying to a different field but I have been asking around about this. Most schools told me to count back to the last 5 credits for final year (0.5 credits half year course and 1 credit full year). So if I took 2 credits in Summer and 3.0 in Fall with application due in Spring that would be my 5 credits. However if I took nothing in Summer, the last fall-winter marks would be used. Same thing for final year. I don't think part-time vs full-time has anything to do with calculating GPA. It should only come into play in terms of them deciding on whether you can handle full-time grad studies. Note: Call the admission office before you do anything it took me less than 30 minutes at each school for someone to answer all my questions. And they each gave specific instructions.
  10. I agree, about the question being inappropriate. I was actually asked this during an interview due to the fact the last employee only gave 2 weeks notice during their busy season to go to grad school. It was an awkward situation because I knew eventually I would leave for grad school as well but I had a year their before applying so I said no. Unfortunately for my boss but fortunate for me was that three months later an amazing research opportunity fell into my lap and while it didn't pay the bills I moved in with my folks to do it. My boss was beyond pissed, she spent a week complaining to everyone about it. However I had no fear that she would contact the school, or that their would be a problem. However she was quick to find a replacement who I know now has also applied to grad school (its a laboratory job so most people want to go to grad school). Once she found the replacement she was trilled about my opporunity and surprised me with a bag of school supplies and a nice leaving gift.
  11. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "I have chosen a faculty" I assuming you mean you know who you want to work with but you haven't contacted them. Normally the usually way to go about this once a professor is chosen is to contact them with a detailed emailing, you can search or google some templates there are several professors who wrote blog posts on how they like to be contacted in these situations. So basically its back and forth emails (sometimes in person if possible) until the professor says yes you can put their name down as your supervisor for the application.
  12. When you sign up for the GRE there is an option to share your information, once you click that box you probably filled out things like GPA, major, citizenship, etc. Schools use this to find potential candidates and encourage people to apply to their school.
