Iowa is still a solid choice for northern ren (Bork and Hochstrasser). I have also heard good things about Amherst, but don't personally know much about the program.

I am considering purchasing an Ipad and keyboard for school next year. I take all my class notes on my laptop, but I want it to last a few more years and one corner of the screen is already shattered. Would an Ipad be a good affordable alternative for note-taking purposes? I figure I can throw all my notes into Dropbox and pull them up on my laptop at home, right?

I am getting the impression that Port Jefferson would be a good town to live in. Also, for what it's worth, a graduate student told me to avoid on-campus housing.

I have been told that a fair number of students live in Brooklyn and Queens, but that just seems too far for me. I would rather take the train to the city, rather than have to take it to class. Something small and close to campus would be perfect, hopefully you are right about the CL situation, Adelantero.

I received my acceptance for the December/January this morning.

We now know that everyone should hear back by March 6th. Unless there was additional information that you needed, I wouldn't email.

I think it would be inappropriate to email a POI about admission decisions. You will eventually find out the committee's decision - the same as all of the other applicants. I know we are all getting anxious, but it is a process we all have to go through and POI's have more important matters to tend to than easing our nerves. Not trying to come off as rude, it's just my opinion.

I too imagined all of the terrible things that could have happened to my little application en route to Venice. Let's hope they all got there safely!

I have not heard anything either, but I am sure emails will be sent out soon. Apparently they email all applicants their decisions, so I wouldn't worry about not hearing anything yet.

I keep checking as well, even though I know it still is a little early. I only applied to four schools and one internship this year, and have only heard back from one thus far. There are a lot of "non-modernists" here. I love Italian Baroque, but Italian Modern is more my jam.

I have a feeling that February is going to be a long month, y'all.

Between Fields - This school only has a Ph.D. program, so I would have complete my MA elsewhere. Ghostsbeforebreakfast - Thank you! I definitely intend to keep in touch, now that it seems to be a genuine offer as opposed to a stock response. His work has had a notable influence on my own interests, so his rejecting me personally was still encouraging.

Human - "What are you going to study in grad school?" Me - "Art History." Human - "Oh. I didn't know you needed a Ph.D. to flip burgers."

I received an email from a POI informing me that I was not going to be accepted into his school's program, as they favor students with masters degrees. He went on to suggest I enroll in a masters program and then reapply. The rejection was no big surprise as this is easily a top 5 program in my field. However, the reason he emailed me is because he said he had been very impressed with my application. He also left a standing offer to contact him any time for professional advice. This did surprise me, because we had not been in contact beforehand. I am wondering if it is normal for POIs to personally email rejection notices of this nature? Would it actually be appropriate to contact him in the future for academic advice?

I submitted my application to the Graduate Center a week ago. Today I logged into my account and it says that my application is incomplete as my unofficial transcripts and GRE scores were not received. I double checked and those documents were definitely attached when I submitted my application. Any idea what is going on? Should I contact the school?

Oh it just said on your profile. I applied to Hunter because their Italian Modern professors are tops. Nine programs total sounds like a healthy list. Good luck!

Submitting applications was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of my life! I chose programs whose faculty has had an influence on the development of my research interests, so my heart is set on each one. Knowing that rejections are a possibility, however, I also applied for an internship abroad. Until decisions are made, it's all about keeping the anxiety at bay. Good luck, all! I failed a major-related survey course when I was a Sophomore at a junior college, because I was unable to finish it. As a Junior at a university, I retook the course and received an A+, replacing the F in my GPA. I cannot decide whether or not I should address this in my SOP. As it's written now, I discuss my specific area of focus, how I have spent the last two years developing my research skills in this area (research grant, studying abroad, private language lessons, ect...), and what I want to research in graduate school. At no point do I acknowledge my F, because all of my grades since then have been As or A-s, and it obviously does not reflect my abilities to research in my field. Plus, who wants to hear excuses? This approach seems like a gamble, so opinions are appreciated.

A great piece of advice I was given was to not compliment programs or POIs in your SOP. If a university has an excellent program and faculty, they know that and they don't need you to tell them. Rather, spend those words explaining the specific reasons you would be a good fit in the program.

Napoleon87 - Not sure where you are at, but I had to start from square one in the math department. I have focused on memorizing formulas and orders of operations but am not devoting much time to it. The impression I'm getting is that verbal and writing scores make the difference in our field, but it is best to have high scores across the board. What about you?

Hey fellow AH major! I purchased a 30 day subscription and have been running through practice questions for a few weeks now. This morning I scored a 162 verbal on a practice test, which is a definite improvement from the mid 150s I started with. As the above poster mentioned, you can customize your practice. This includes level of difficulty and type of question so you can focus on reading comp. If you can afford it, it is worth your two weeks!
