If you are interested in American politics can I assume you want to do quantitative methods as well? If that is the case I also recommend MIT, TAMU, Rochester, Duke, and Ohio St in no particular order. These programs have strong quantitative methods and are supposedly great places to do American politics.
I am on a political scientist track now as well. I have often mused over this question though, and have a pretty solid answer. I would either go into Economics or Astronomy. While the economics is not a huge deviation from my current field (especiall since I'm an IPE type) astronomy is. You would never know it looking at me or my resume, but I am probably one of the most knowledgable persons you will ever meet about the field of astronomy. Most of my friends are physicists and they constantly comment how knowledgeable I am in the subject for a "lay person". In fact my role model growing up was Carl Sagan.
To the OP: you have a great profile just don't screw up the SOP and you are golden. You will make it in to AT LEAST three of those schools you have applied to.
To the people saying he wont get in: have you lost your minds? These type of degrees are not like MBAs work experience in the field (or lack thereof) is not going to exclude him.
A lot of those guys have been ABD or full PhD's for a while. I don't want to name names but I took undergrad classes from some of them and that was a while ago.
TAMU takes about 12 to 15 people a year.
For reasons of mental sanity I would like to believe them to be false, but looking at last years results people started recieving acceptances the Wednesday of this week. That and I was told they would admit people as they reviewed the files.
I wonder what particular fields those persons who have been accepted to are involved in? I applied trying to do work in IR and methods since its a very quant heavy program.
I just learned that individual packets are being reviewed by the committee as of Wednesday and decisions will roll out as the committee decides, so expect to hear back soon.
