I'm just making a helpful suggestion from someone who is where you all want to be. Try taking a look at the Strategic Logic of Political Survival by BDM^2
-
I said JDs "MIGHT" have the knowledge to teach one incredibly small focused list of courses. Polsci faculty have much broader teaching repertoires. Additionally, the primary job of a polsci faculty member is 1: to conduct social science research, 2: to train grad students to become social science researchers. JDs can do neither of those things.
-
This whole topic is absolutely retarded. No I am not going to beat around the bush with civilities because this argument that JDs can serve a role within a political science faculty is absolute drivel. Here is why: JDs are trained in the function, execution, and letter of the law and legal process. Political scientists are trained in how to be a political scientist which means theorizing and conducting research in social science phenomena. These are two completely unrelated fields. While a JD might have enough "knowledge" to teach some pointless undergrad seminar on policy or law, they are not trained competently to be successful as a social scientific researcher, in any of the disciplines, not just including political science. There is much more to being a political science professor than giving some trite lecture about some interesting facts to mostly dullard undergraduates. By the OP's logic a political scientist who specializes in international legal institutions would be equally qualified as an LLM to argue a trade case before the WTO.
-
I mean this in the nicest sort of way that I can, do not apply for political theory. It is a dead end and there are no theory jobs to speak of. The discipline is moving away from normative theory more and more every year, and if you want proof pick up any of the top 5 journals in the discipline and look at what is published.
-
If any of you are planning on attending a positive science oriented department just read books for fun that you think you will enjoy, because none of the books listed will help you in any sort of way academically.
-
Wondering if anyone here accepted an offer there.
-
You guys are ridiculous.
-
I actually have several publications so that rules out what you are saying. The OP needs one of those things that I mentioned to set them-self outside of the crowd to get into a top 25, especially with a sub-par gpa like that. I know this personally because my overall was a 3.3, albeit due to two years of engineering. I forgot to mention that the strength of your undergrad institution will factor in as well, so it would be useful to know what it is.
-
Take your gre and report the actual scores. Also if you don't have any publications or an undergrad thesis its extremely unlikely you will get in a top 25 program (if admissions are tight like this year). Simply put your file is underwhelming for those programs. Low GPA, no real quant work, no previous grad work, no pubs, no research experience, straight from undergrad. You will be fighting an uphill battle.

Anything in particular about fsu that dissuaded you from attending? Just curious since I am visiting next week. Feel free to pm me.

Global Governance at University of Waterloo
Aunuwyn replied to rainy_season's topic in Political Science Forum
Wrong forum. This is for PhD's of MA's in Political Science, not terminal degrees oriented around IR. -
Pure market economics at play. They offer people unfunded PhD slots and they still take them. So, why not right? The market moves towards meeting demand.

Korbel is considered to be the same caliber of school as any in the top 10, and definitely has pull in DC. That being said you should go to the professional school offering you the most financial aid. Also, fyi, Korbel has the best security program outside of Columbia's PhD, SAIS, or the Naval Post-Grad school.

Yeah its in the Allen building. Bush School =1st floor Political Science = 2nd floor Economics = 3rd floor Kind of important to know that so you can pick up on the subtle bashing of the other departments in the building by your faculty.
-
Congrats on the acceptance and funding! Where are you looking at going?
-
Oh believe me that would be on the table if i had targets to direct it upon . Then again, you can be my source of D&D (denial and deception) to the IR folks at the visit hehehe.
-
Being on a waitlist myself I would like everyone to just decline their offer so I can get in

I live in an apartment 1 mile East on Iliff Ave of the Iliff School of theology. My 1 BR is 595 a month with parking, heat, sewer, water, and trash included. Its in a pretty quiet neighborhood next to two private schools, daycare centers, and veterinary clinics. Also the light rail is only 1 block away. PM me and I an try to get you the name of the place and contact info of the manager so you can check it out.

Accepted to the Doctoral program in Political Science there. Am going to visit in the first week of April.
-
I just decided to attend the next week of visits they are doing since there will be less prospectives.
-
Perhaps we can meet at the FSU event.

PSJR is anything but helpful. It is highly entertaining, especially with the pedophile bear.
-
Just out of curiosity, how was the second letter phrased that made it sound rude? Just curious about how my undergrad treats applicants.

I posted the first FSU acceptance today. Feels good to finally be in somewhere, but I definitely want to visit and see my funding package before I commit to anything.
