  1. Did anyone else find that the Cal State Long Beach course equivalency part of the application contained a lot more classes than you actually took even with a completed COMD degree? I did my COMD degree as a second bachelors /post-bac at Utah State, and I did not take many of the courses they are asking for "equivalency" for. These subjects were covered in other classes, yes, but I did not take standalone classes in these areas, such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Swallowing Disorders, Voice Disorders, etc. I'm having to list multiple classes several times and I'm really hoping it doesn't make my application look bad
  2. I was just wondering how you all approach making contact with professors or department chairs as far as just getting your name out there. I went to an information session at one of the top programs I'm considering today and one of the professors / department chair spoke and gave us advice about applying and gave us information about the program. She also informed us she's one of the main people that goes over applications, so I figure implanting my name in her head wouldn't hurt. I asked her a few questions today so I figure that's enough to mention in an email, and maybe expand upon a question I asked her. I also feel a bit strange doing this, and I don't want this to hurt me, as if I'm trying to "weasel my way in" so to speak. There isn't anything specifically I need to know from her that I can't find out elsewhere (I think?), I simply want to convey how much I'd like to be a part of this program and that I'm a good fit for the school.
  3. So I took the GRE last year on minimal to no studying. Last year I decided I was not going to apply until this year, but I had already scheduled a GRE so I figured I'd give it a go, take it without much studying just to see where I was at. I scored 161 on verbal, which I was obviously pretty pleased about, but only 149 on quant and 4.0 on writing. This year I'll obviously be studying before I take it another time, but I'm just curious, if I'm not able to improve my quant score that much, will schools look at a high verbal as outweighing the poor quant? Or would they choose someone that had, say, 155 on both over someone that was poorer in math? I'm going to study like crazy and hope that I can get a similar verbal score, and at least bump that quant score into the 150's! Getting a better writing score will probably help too.
  4. Well, I haven't taken the GRE yet, so I guess we shall see in November if I am confident in that regard, haha. And yes by no means do I believe I would for sure get in next year, but I'm just feeling like my application would look stronger with a full CSD GPA (since my first bachelors GPA isn't anything special at all). Money really is a big factor though, I should expect to spend at least $600-700 on the whole process, if not more, of money I don't really have. And I guess if I'm going to apply once or multiple times, I was thinking maybe its best to do it when my application doesn't have clear holes like classes not taken, no extracurriculars related to the field, only one GRE attempt, etc. But anyway, as far as people in CSD undergrad programs, I just assumed even if they were in their final year, they would have more classes under their belt than me. Thank you very much for your input though. I may just apply to a couple programs, maybe the ones I can determine to be least competitive, for now to see where it goes. And yes, I have definitely noticed this, particularly that CSU Fullerton will not accept your application unless you have grades in 8 of the prereqs at the time of applying (which I won't). This is what originally caused me to re-think applying this fall, because if this university explicitly stated it, it made me wonder if other universities do it to a lesser extent without making it an official mandate. As for statistics, it really seems all over the place and inconsistent. I've seen websites of some programs stating that it is required to have a grade in it prior to starting the grad program, and some programs don't seem to mention it at all. Sigh..
  5. Hello all. So I was originally planning to do all my applying to programs this fall, to apply to programs for fall of 2015 admission. However, after enough reading and seeing how truly competitive programs are (especially here in CA), I am pretty much deciding to wait until next year to apply (for Fall of 2016 admission). I am in Utah State's online 2nd bachelors program (undergrad degree in linguistics), and have 8 more classes to go including the 4 I am taking this semester and the 4 I will take next semester (I also still need to take statistics..). As much as it pains me to delay grad school even further, I am assuming this is a smart enough decision, since I would assume any grad school would take an equally qualified candidate who has completed a CSD program already versus "gambling" on someone who still has 4 or 5 classes to go (it should also be noted that I will only have one GRE attempt under my belt if I apply this Fall). One of the major reasons for this is money, all of these applications and sending of transcripts can be pretty costly, especially if I have a fairly slim chance of acceptance. But also, if I choose not to apply this fall, I will have much more time to focus on my classes instead of worrying about the GRE, application deadlines, essays, etc. I could also use the extra year to get more observation hours. Do you all think my logic is sound in this matter? Any advice? Does anyone know if applying multiple times to a particular program improves chance of acceptance? (if this is the case maybe I'll at least apply to a couple) Sorry for my long-winded post!
  6. Not so stellar undergrad GPA (but better last 60 units and major GPA), currently taking my 2nd prereq course through USU, hoping to get a good GPA in this program! Still need to do the GRE as well... and having a difficult time trying to find somewhere to shadow/volunteer in the field, as nobody will get back to me :/
  7. Hey there! Linguistics grad last year and now in Utah State's second degree program for CD, looking to apply for Fall of 2015 for programs mostly in CA, but a few out of state too. Really worried about the competitiveness of CA schools!
  8. Congrats to everyone accepted, been stalking these forums for awhile but finally decided I should become a poster. Going through all 62 pages of this thread I'm surprised about the lack of discussion of CA schools (at least compared to what I'd expect it to be, considering how competitive it's supposed to be out here). I've taken 2 classes so far in Utah State's second bachelors program and I'll be starting full time in the fall, to be done with prereqs in time to hopefully start grad in Fall of 2015. Just a bit nervous about my chances, considering my lack of experience (volunteer and work-wise, I work full time in an office *yawn* ), not super stellar undergrad GPA, short list of potential LOR-writers (my Linguistics program had ONE PROFESSOR for all upper div courses! and I'm doing my post-bac online), and haven't taken the GRE yet. I am male, obviously, so who knows whether that'll help or not, if they go by purely trying to fill a demographic slot. I'll be applying to several out of state schools, but ideally I get in somewhere in CA as my girlfriend will be applying to CA nursing programs! Any advice for someone in my position to stand out? And I really need to get studying for the GRE!!!
