  1. My "fun" reading consists of finding extra/better secondary and historical sources for my papers that are due next week. I'm looking forward to a trip to Barnes & Nobles after the semester is over! Anyone have any good historical fiction to recommend? Its my guilty pleasure. ETA: I just realized that the copy of The Book of Common Prayer that I ordered from Amazon 2 months ago never arrived....strange...That was supposed to be my winter break fun reading.
  2. I included editing in a "Consulting and Workshops" section. Maybe give that a try.
  3. I'm not sure what I did, but after I kept trying to log in, it finally let me through. Strange.
  4. Is anyone else having problems with the UCI app? I've been trying to complete my application for weeks, but when I log in with my existing username and password that I created months ago, I get a long error message. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a divine intervention?
  5. Yep! There's a specific kind of satisfaction in seeing that "Under Review" status as well.
  6. I tried to upvote this, but apparently one upvote is all I get before I meet my quota... BUT CONGRATS! That is amazing news!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. This is my generic rant post about schools that require teaching statements/diversity statements/adversity statements/intellectual statements. Just take my SOP, please. I worked very hard on it, I promise.
  8. PS, that's how I felt taking the math portion of the GRE. Randomly imputing numbers ftw!
  9. Lol same here. I worked with the original document that I turned in for a seminar thesis as one of my writing samples and all I can say is that my writing has sure come along in a year! That paper has been edited and edited and revised so many times for presentations and whatnot, but I decided to go back to the orginial to get the maximized length. What a discouraging idea. I finally just saved my writing samples as PDFs and am calling it quits!
  10. Another one of my favorite and relevant Lilo and Stitch quotes: "Stitch is depressed. He needs desserts!" I'm glad to hear that everything is going relatively well! One of my favorite things about having a to do list (even though they seem to be more overwhelming than helpful) is the feeling I get when I can cross an item off the list! I was going back through my undergrad transcripts and I took 5 English classes during most semesters. Seems like suicide now that I'm looking back on it. You'll make it through!
  11. With the first wave of applications due tomorrow, I finally have a SOP that I'm satisfied with. Many thanks to Wyatt's Torch for calming me down in a panic! I'll take this opportunity to do a wellness check. How's everyone doing? Stress levels? Finals going well? Anything you want to complain/boast about? We need some good news in all this stress, so if anyone has anything positive to share, let's hear it!
  12. I attended a workshop on how to construct a CV. I can send you mine as a guide if you would like. Just send your email my way in a PM.
  13. Yay UCI! I think they're the only school I'm completely crossing my fingers for in California. Not that there aren't other great programs, I just really want to get out of this area.
  14. When I signed up to take the GRE, I was asked if I wanted to create some kind of profile so that schools can see how I did for recruitment purposes. Does that sound familiar? I'm not sure how to access it or anything, but I'm being contacted by schools so obviously someone can see it.
  15. GW was one of the programs on my list that I was advised to remove. It was probably the program that was the hardest to let go. I liked what they had to offer for early modern studies and their resources were nice as well. Maybe give them a shot!
  16. Brandeis just sent me a fee waver because I signed up for the GRE profile thingy. Check your email to see if you got one too. I'm sure most of you did since I didn't score as high as some of you on the GRE. They do require the subject test, though.
  17. To be fair, my recommender does have his PhD from Harvard, so I can see where his vein of thinking originates. That being said, the schools that I slashed were ones I picked because of their ranking, not because of fit. It was a good decision all around. Also, I'm not applying to any Ivies because of my subject GRE so its not like he was telling me to only apply to Ivies. I have a wide range of schools in my list. This entire process/job market is absolutely a gamble, though.
  18. U Delaware is on my list as well. One of the things one of my recommenders did for me that was very helpful was that he sat me down and basically told me that if I get a PhD from certain places on my list, I would be hard pressed to find a job. I had added some "safety" or "less-loved" schools to my list to increase my chances, but I ended up cutting about 6 off because of his advice. Looking at my list now, UC San Diego is probably the only other "less loved" program I kept, and I did so because my school has a history of successful applicants to the PhD program there. Claremont Graduate was one that I ended up getting rid of even though my recommender said positive things about the program and a few of the professors from my school have received their PhDs from Claremont. The area wasn't somewhere I necessarily wanted to be in for 7 years because it was kind of too close to home, but not close enough to water for me. The set up of the program seems unique though, and maybe some of you would like to check it out.
  19. The feedback that I have gotten from fellow members here has been invaluable. Exchanging is amazing!
  20. I HAVE A GIF I NEED TO SHARE BUT I CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO IT Figured it out. I'm smart sometimes. Basically how I feel having filled out most of my applications and now must wait for an adcomm to like me:
  21. This is giving me a slight panic attack
  22. YAY! This is so exciting! Congrats!!!!!
  23. I was always naturally good at reading. By age 6, I was reading chapter books and I could spell my older brother's weekly spelling list without even seeing the words initially. I read 1984 for funsies in high school and I actually had nightmares in which acid was being poured on my boyfriend at the time as I watched his skin melt off because I wouldn't give up some mysterious tape that had incriminating evidence about his family on it. From there, I decided to go in to English education to prevent the breakdown to language and therefore the cumulation of power into one or a few individuals. About the same time that I decided I didn't enjoy working with high school students (thank you, required internship hours!), I discovered the Wierd Sisters from Macbeth and all their historical witchy gender implications. Boom. Done. Sold.
  24. I've been taking it out on my boyfriend, which sucks. I want to start running again.
