Doing a PhD with a 2 year-old and a newborn...
SNPCracklePop replied to Postbib Yeshuist's topic in Officially Grads
Check into the program's and university's policies. I don't see why mothers wouldn't be eligible for maternity leave, but it may involve stipend cuts, or complete suspension of benefits. Great thread here. Just wrapping my first year in a Ph.D. program with an eighteen month old and a one month old. Studying for finals in a birthing triage was an interesting experience -
Who loves their graduate program?
SNPCracklePop replied to mandarin.orange's topic in Officially Grads
I've only been at my program since September, but I've really enjoyed the experience so far. I've made some great friends with my fellow students, and I look forward to coming into my lab each day to read new theories and discuss them with my advisor. The advisor really makes the difference between heaven and hell in graduate school. Sure there are stressful moments, there is never enough $$$, and family life adds to the responsibilities, but there is nothing like the freedom to explore, develop, and test theories. It's a chapter of your life unlike others, and many wish for this opportunity and never get the chance. Embrace every aspect of it, and best of luck. -
research this

I use dealoz.com quite a bit. It basically sweeps the major shopping sites for you, and you can compare the prices. I've had a lot of success through them, including a normally 120.00 book for $3.00! Hope this helps.

How do I know a lab is well-funded?
SNPCracklePop replied to SNPCracklePop's topic in Officially Grads
Thanks so much for the help. Love these resources, spent quite a bit of time researching potential advisors. Thanks again!! -
These are all fantastic ideas. I just checked the school's site, and they offer EndNote for students. Never knew about Google Docs, that sounds great. Will pick up a file cabinet definitely. Thank you all again!!!!
-
funny that you mentioned this book. Just finished reading this, and I agree. Fantastic resource!!!

Hi everyone. I will be starting my Ph.D. program this Fall, and I was curious if you have any ideas on what I should buy over the summer. I plan on getting a ton of notebooks of course, and I've heard a file cabinet comes in handy, but I was wondering what you wonderful folks thought. Thank you so much!!!

Hi! I recently was admitted into a program in Molec. Bio + Genetics, and I'm looking at potential advisors. Are there any resources outside of the dept. website that can provide details on a particular lab's funding? If not, should I assume that a high number of recent publications is a strong indication of adequate funding? Any ideas would really help me out. Thank you so much!

Just got the rejection email. No more waiting.

I've heard the same thing about programs with high numbers of applicants. One typo, grammar error, misspelling, etc. and your app is trashed and they spend the fee.
-
Negatives-a-plenty! Low Verbal Score (450), maybe they'll look at the higher AW (5.5) instead. No publications Academic probation in UG, hoping the much, much better GR performance shadows that. One LOR is a "did well in class" letter.
-
aww that's a really nice idea.
-
My wife, my ma, Facebook, Results Page, LORs, and THEN everyone at work, he he he.
-
I contacted the office and they told me that they are finalizing their admissions decisions and hope to give everyone answers within the next week or two.
-
I positively agree (har har har). I have 3.5 years lab tech experience with next-gen Sequencing, Genotyping, and Gene Expression analyses and another thirteen months as an lab assistant. Improved from a 2.73 UG GPA to a 3.81 GR GPA. Excellent LORs.

Ha ha. Thanks Bryan. What's not to like about a totipotent PhD program?!?!? Serric, yeah I'm assuming the worst at this point based on last year's dates.

Nope, not an international student. Applied with interests in Human Genetics and Microbio/Immuno. Unless Human Genetics is slacking (doubtful), fingers crossed for the wait list or a quick, painless rejection email. Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone! I received an email back in mid-December explaining that my app was complete, under review, and that I would be notified of my status near the end of December. However, I haven't heard from them since. Curious if anyone else is waiting on PIBS.
-
Only applying to two programs. I'm predicting 1/2. Acceptances: Wayne State showed a lot of interest last year and threw stipend offers, withdrew app for my baby boy. Rejections: UMich-PIBS might be too far of a reach, especially since I haven't received an interview invite yet, and rejections happened about this time last year.
