  1. Submitted my first app. This is wicked relieving
  2. @museum_geek congrats! did you submit already to Vandy?
  3. @Zebu, Honestly, it's better not to look at those, in my opinion, because they have in-text citations all over the place and are typically longer than what most programs want anyway. I would focus on wording it how the graduate school (and department if they list) want because that's what they are looking for. I know how nerve-racking it can be to write one of these for the first time but my advice is to find out what the program wants, write everything out and leave it for a few hours or a day, come back and edit it, and then have a friend or a professor take a look at it and edit again -- Given how short of time you have.
  4. @museum_geek they probably do, these are with POIs etc. I believe one of mine is on their admission board but not sure since it just changed and the website doesn't reflect it. They suggested it actually.
  5. Just got interview confirmations from Brown and Vanderbilt for the coming weeks.
  6. I don't think you are, necessarily. There has been some input from a current professor about how they admit students. I know that there was some talk before about who responds and it could be a multitude of factours, i.e. sabbatical, teaching, other things. I would send a follow-up email a week or so after your last email. I've done that before.
  7. Hey Everyone, I just found this thread, good luck to everyone!
  8. Hey! I'm not familiar with those programs, which ones specifically are you applying to?
  9. Hey! The GPA and GRE scores seem fine, the only thing I would suggest would be trying to work/volunteer with an NGO that works with indigenous populations (depending on which region of the world could fine some troubles in doing so). Additionally, you could look up other organizations that are in the public health arena or places that focus in community engagement.
  10. Hey I was wondering if anyone was looking at the MD/PhD route for anthropology, I posted this on the medical forum but no one replied haha

    MD/PhD

Hey Y'all I am currently applying to PhD programs in Anthropology (Biological Anthropology) and have been looking more into the combo programs of MD/PhD. I know some programs want the PhD in a biological science but some programs that I am interested in would allow me to do this through Anthropology. Anyway, I was hoping for some feedback, advice, comments, etc. about the process, if it's worth it, and everything. My professors and schools resources aren't that equipped to give any advice besides "Apply and let's see?". Thanks!
  12. Honestly, it varies from Uni to Uni. I was told by my POI at Brown that although I ultimately choose who I would want to work with, its among the faculty until you choose as opposed to other schools where if you're accepted, you know who you're working with sort of deal. You should also reach out to the graduate director too.
  13. I am also surprised that there aren't more people are posting in this forum 2 months before apps are due
  14. I can see this going both ways. When I applied for fall 2015, I got a handful of emails but they seemed as a typical email and I got accepted to 3 out of 4 schools. Now, applying for PhD programs, I've gotten emails back from everyone and a phone call. I think it really depends on who you are applying to work with, what school, etc. I know that abstract deadlines are happening the past two weeks and that can get annoying. Honestly, it may just be the time that you send the email etc. I know If I get an email from a student late at night after a long day, I'll wait till the morning to respond (pending if it's an emergency). -Exactly what @museum_geek said, don't get discouraged, the first few weeks of school are always chaotic and may be a chance of luck. If you don't hear back from them in a week or so, send another email and if there is still no response, then consider not applying.
  15. @anthrosoul I think if you buy the book and dedicate 2 hours each day up until the exam, you'll be fine and have the same practice you would a class, just cheaper.
  16. Your scores are not bad at all, I believe once you meet the 'minimum' that they look for, its about who gets funding etc. I know for biological anth admissions they look for the quant score over the verbal but again you did fine. I think that ultimately you need to call/email the director of graduate studies for your program and ask about the TOEFL. I have a friend in Peru that is planning on applying to US PhD programs and the price to take it is outrageous! I'm talking $200 american which is the equivalent to about s/ 668 nueve soles. If you are not required to take it, I wouldn't because its a lot of money. But anyone else that has had to who is in a similar situation as @Bidisha Chakraborty please correct me if I'm wrong
  17. I'm still finalizing my list but so far what I have right now is pretty solid. I took the GRE 2 years ago but I think I'm going to take it again once I get paid in early October or so, my deadlines are early 2017. Otherwise everything else is on its way. I'm also preparing for my Comps this semester so I'm trying to be as proactive as possible haha
  18. Hey All, quick question: for those that have taught classes and created your own syllabus, how much reading do you normally shoot for a given meeting time? I've been told not too much and not too many but also have had classes that either have a short NYTimes article to about 100 pages a night.... So, any feedback would be amazing!
  19. I think that would be fine. If you have worked closely, built a relationship, and they know your interests and such - it's not a bad idea at all in my opinion!
  20. @bioarch_fan you're more into Roman Bioarch though, no?
  21. Right now they have Bioanths rather than bioarchs but I was looking more at the MD/PhD. For Cornell, they hired and Andean Bioarch but he's listed under post-docs this year until next so his clock doesn't begin for review/tenure and that sort of thing.
